Imagine all the people
Living for today…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Did the Rugby World Cup help Australian rugby?

Has RWC helped the game in Oz?
– Don’t think so – only one match (vs AB’s) gained really wide interest.

Long term benefits?
– minimal, if any.

Does the ARU have a plan?
– 😆

Did the Rugby World Cup help Australian rugby?

That’s the point that Midfielder is making though John (I think). There was massive interest in Soccer when Australia made the world cup and this has flowed into improving support for the domestic game once soccer got its house in order. It’s just not going to happen with union so long as the current administration and professional playing structures remain. It will continue to be, as you put it, a bandwagon sport only with minimal interest bar the odd game here and there.

Well, I’ve been discussing the Rugby World Cup with overseas friends and I disagree with your point about sports becoming popular over time. There’s been quite a bit of interest in the Italian media regarding Rugby and the Italians I know are far more aware of the game than was the case when I was living there 10 years ago. Will it be the number 1 game? No way, but it can at least increase its support base. However, rather than discuss demographic cultural shifts ad nauseum I might just list a few examples I can think of off the top of my head in relation to your ’50 year’ time frame:

West Indies – cricket declining, basketball and football growing.
Just about everywhere where wrestling was the dominant sport (Central Asia, rural areas of Central and Eastern Europe, India, etc.), football (or cricket in the case of India) has taken over and wrestling has declined considerably.
Everywhere – basketball now has a massive global presence which wasn’t the case 50 years ago.

“Rugby union and football share a couple of things in common: both have previously struggled with very poor management and competition structures…”

RU still has poor management and competition structures. The A-League has gone some way to correct the problem that dogged domestic football; a club competition that only engaged a small percentage of football fans (due to its narrow ethnic bias). The S15 isn’t the vehicle to do that in Oz, but politics especially from a handful of clubs in Sydney prevents any change on that front.

So basically apart from the odd match here and there there won’t be any real follow on interest in the sport.

That’s right George. We’re still building for the next Rugby World Cup in 2015. We’ll see how the Wallabies go then. This tournament has been a really good stepping stone for that.

Gutted. Just gutted.

Just reread this. You wily bugger Cattery! You got me! 😆

And in the past we had the odd Islander lock/backrower or Argie prop to act as our Sherpas doing the ‘yak work’ up front and guide us along the correct route. We’re kind of going it alone now. It’s scary. 🙁

eladnara: Do you think it’s ever going to be the same now the club’s been privatised?

Knights to break home losing streak

So why do you think the Storm are being singled out in this poll then? Seems strange to me when they all do it.

Yet I don’t get the impression from reading player comments that they are as intimidated by Manly as they are the Storm.

Well Al, we discussed the whole ‘wrestling’ issue a fortnight ago:

The Run Home: where every NRL team is likely to finish

I don’t see where the Storm are any better or any worse than any other team.

So by that definition Turkey and Israel are not Middle Eastern countries at all either.

Socceroos' World Cup draw announced

Cattery, if you’re referring to the match against the Boks, well, it was a step up, but then the personnel were different for the match. Next Saturday’s match is going to be important to see where they are at. It’s just so hard at the moment to take anything out of the matches against the Boks for either NZ or Oz. They’ve sent over a pretty experimental playing group which probably won’t relate to their main playing group when the RWC comes around.

My concern is that we’ve had 4 years under Deans. I just don’t see where we are going. I don’t even think it’s really Deans’ fault. Some tough decisions have to be made regarding the future of Rugby in this country.

Just shrug it off mate. I don’t know how long you’ve been coming to this site, but it’s well worth it. Obviously the pros in the “Expert” (blue) column set the tone for the discussions. Sometimes they can be very good, but after last night’s match and all that could be discussed, today’s article was pretty average. It’s a commercial site though so there are going to be ‘puff’ pieces to drive traffic to the site.

I would certainly say that this site has some incredibly articulate posters with very well considered opinions. The signal to noise ratio is quite good overall, but yeah, today’s lead off was a bit of a disappointment.

Agreed, but how many shots in the arm do they need though? Do you really think they too a long hard look at themselves though? The post match comments from Deans and the players suggested otherwise.

@Naki: I don’t insult the writer, but I do insult this piece. David has my respect and produced a superb write up the other day for which I was gushing with praise. I was having a dig at Lorry (not all Kiwis) and it included a bit of a reminder at the odd silly post he has made like the rest of us, that’s all.

Point is; you take an average person and give them the same sort of structure Jessica Watson had in place, they could achieve what she did. Give the same structure to an average person and still nobody but Cadel Evans could do what he just did.

Mia Freedman on Evans: Not wrong but most definitely not right

This is the main point. How do you define “dirty”? I mean, I have a wrestling/grappling background and some of the techniques which have been identified as “dirty” don’t seem too bad for me, but others where I think are there problems appear to be of no concern to RL fans with no knowledge of wrestling technique. It’s all about perception. Melbourne Storm are in a good position to take out the comp this year so the perception is quite different from last years so it seems!

Al, in a very clear and direct way please spell out what you mean by ‘dirty’? Exactly what tactics are you referring to?

Bellamy mocks dirtiest NRL team label

What nonsense. The Storm have incorporated a variety of maneuvers from wrestling and grappling into their techniques for manipulating a tackled player into inferior bio-mechanical positions. Some of them have been deemed unacceptable to Rugby League fans. If you’re a wrestling coach, you won’t necessarily know what the RL public will accept as being acceptable. You just advise them the techniques. Techniques that have been deemed ‘dangerous’ or ‘foul-play’ to Rugby Leaguers are forbidden. There’s no conspiracy behind it.

Point taken Lorry even if I don’t take much notice of the regular Kiwi whingers on this site. I felt sarcasm was warranted after I read this puff piece. Are you still hoping for that Maori bad luck spell on the new English black jersey? Good luck for next week. 🙂
