Maybe it’s the same situation though, that Marino’s isn’t a well credentialed CEO. If we get someone good (it’s RA, so that’s a massive IF) maybe McLennan will finally shut up and take a back seat. In reality though, RA will probably just follow the Reds coaching recruitment model: search the office carpark thoroughly and then appoint Phil Waugh.

Revealed: Why Rugby Australia boss resigned four months out from World Cup as replacement emerges

Ikitau and Samu were both injured, they weren’t rested.

Brumbies rue missed chances as dubious refereeing calls help Hurricanes win thriller

Edmed is injured as is Harrison. That’s the main reason Donaldson is still at ten. Agree Tahs scrum was terrible. Disagree Seu was best. I think Pietsch/Hooper/Perese were better.

'A real grind': Waratahs keep season alive by winning ugly against Highlanders

Haha, there is no way that was a penalty try champ. Nice try though…

I wouldn’t get too critical about Australians and the ref. Whatever some New Zealander’s on here think their compatriots aren’t immune to complaining either. Nor are the fans of most nations when games go poorly. I think you can separate the criticism of the officiating out from the result. I don’t think the Brumbies deserved to win tonight, but it is perfectly legitimate to highlight how bad some decisions like allowing the Hurricanes second try are. It was early in the game, so who knows how it would have played out if it had been called differently, but it is just substandard officiating that no one thought to double check that throw in. It was so clearly not straight in real time, I can understand the ref missing it, I can’t understand how both the touch judge and the TMO couldn’t see it. The comp needs/deserves better than that.

The suggestion that Lynagh has do anything exceptional is ludicrous . Perhaps he will .

I admire how experimental you are with your prose Tooly.

Prodigal's return: O'Connor eyes remarkable move back to Force as Wallabies young gun stays put at Reds

That assumes a Japanese team would pay that much money for a 32 year old with an extensive and ongoing injury history. O’Connor also has a history of past indiscretions, which I certainly don’t think matter anymore, but which Japanese teams tend to be less forgiving of. I’m not sure he would necessarily command that much money in Japan.

– Maybe.
– He’s probably aiming for the Lions Tour but is unlikely to get there.
– He’s spent a lot of his career outside of Australia, maybe he wants to live here now? He has a big injury history too. Japanese teams are cautious about players like that.
– That’s not fair. They clearly are developing their own talent and all Australian sides take players from each other anyway.

Signing Hegarty for another two years to ease Pasitoa in at flyhalf should 100% be their priority. If they do go for O’Connor, I hope they don’t pay too much. If he can stay fit though, he would be a big boost in the centres for the Force.

I’m not sure that I would describe a dawn service as tacky. They actually have a long continuous tradition going back to the 1920s, which I think that description unfairly maligns. Although some of the effects you get at them these days, like the photos they put up on the side of the War Memorial during the ceremony there certainly aren’t needed. Agree 100% on the Howard era changes. It’s a very interesting trend to note that as Australia has fought fewer wars and the number of veterans decreases as older generations die out, the idea of the sacredness of ANZAC day has somehow increased. Personally, at sporting events I don’t think they should ever go beyond the last post and a minutes silence and maybe a fundraiser for Legacy or a similar charity. I hate the themed jerseys and think there should be a ban on the use of ANZAC imagery by all sporting teams and codes.

I don’t understand why Sinclair and Seu aren’t switched tbh. Seems like if you switched them, each would be in their natural position. Don’t know why you wouldn’t want to take advantage of Seu’s greater size packing in the second row either.

COMPLETE SRP Round 10 teams: Petaia at 15, six Wallabies return for Tahs, Force old boy's comeback

Yes I have. And I disagree. I reckon he’d struggle going sideways and having to go backwards when kicked over the top in midfield.

Rugby's interest only a minor Payne in Broncos’ Haas hunt with Walters confident star prop will stay long term

I don’t think he has the speed, particularly in defence to play IC. Closest recent comparison I can think of is Tepai Moeroa and he failed dismally as a power centre because he was too slow, particularly in defence. If Haas comes over (and he won’t) he’d definitely be played at no 8 in the style of Billy Vunipola. Running off the back of the scrum he’d do a lot of damage.

His signing may end up being worth it or it may not. Only time will tell. But what the people you know personally will watch and the fact that you’d rather watch dynasty doesn’t really mean much…

Brumbies team last week wasn’t far off a full strength side. Rested Neville and played Frost and White off the bench. Other than that, was imo the best available team taking into account injuries.

COMPLETE SRP Round 9 teams: Tahs Test stars sidelined, Force skipper returns, Rebels big guns are back

I don’t think comparing super rugby to European soccer tells us much. The issue isn’t that the force and rebels are bad, it’s that they’re pretty much always bad, if they had the odd good season interspersed within the dross it would be much less of an issue. I know that plenty of European soccer teams are always down the bottom of the ladder too, but the context there is very different to sport in Australia. But it’s a good point you make otherwise – everything to do with the super rugby narrative is just surrounded by negativity and the wins that do come up are really poorly marketed.

How Super Rugby was set up to fail from the start

I’m not suggesting something as formal as a draft. That only works in closed competitions without competitors. There are ways to move playing resources around a country though to help equalise resources when particular weaknesses in certain teams are identified. I would suggest all of the Force, Moana Pasifika and the Highlanders could benefit from more active national union intervention here. Disagree that Moana Pasifika are just bad due to injuries too – they have the worst tight five both in starters and depth in the comp and you can see that in their set piece. In terms of marketing, there is a heap they could do to promote the game more actively both before the season starts and during, they do a terrible job there. The reason there is persistence is continuing with five teams by RA is because to remove any would do huge damage to the status of the game in this country and would almost certainly kill the code in the regions that are cut. That’s a big call to make to ensure the depth of a few established teams in the short term and would be particularly foolish given the quality players coming out Victoria and WA.

How Super Rugby was set up to fail from the start

And what happens when that current generation of Melbourne forwards retire/go elsewhere? Experience of cutting the Force suggests a lot of the players you think will prop up other franchises leave pretty quickly, so potential to be a very short term boost. Is that really worth destroying one/two teams for? Negative publicity from canning the Force was also huge and drawn out and I think had a major role in diminishing the status of Super Rugby further and to a degree it hasn’t come back from. I think that would very likely happen again. Also, a lot of the best Melbourne forwards are guys from Melbourne (Hosea, Leota, Uelese, Fa’amausili, Canham). Would they necessarily want to move to QLD and NSW if you canned their home team? OR would they go elsewhere? And removing the Rebels would pretty much ensure that they’re the last group of quality Melbourne players that will ever come through.

How Super Rugby was set up to fail from the start

The answer imo, at least in the short term, would be to try running the competition professionally and as an actual genuine competition in its own right rather than as an afterthought leading into internationals. So actually marketing the competition, having proper equalisation measures to avoid the huge and long lasting disparities between teams, assisting in setting up the newer teams on a proper footing rather than leaving them to flounder. Don’t think that’s ever been properly done and might be worth a shot one of these days…

How Super Rugby was set up to fail from the start

Can salaries for players go up when you’ve cut two teams and foregone the additional broadcast revenue that came from having those additional two teams?

How Super Rugby was set up to fail from the start

Agree, though most of those complaints are just from Jimbo, don’t think it’s necessarily a common opinion.

Eddie brings up his 50: Seven players added to Wallabies camp, including reprieves for Perese and Wilson

I don’t think anyone is saying that they’re world beaters. But it was a reasonably convincing win against a team who were ranked higher than them going into this match (even if the table is kind of skewed). What more do you want above a bonus point victory?

Yes, that’s what I can find too when I look up why he moved. Can’t find anything about him not wanting to be signed by Australian sides as Tim suggests. Not convinced Tim is right on this one at all. Am happy to be corrected if anyone can actually cite something though.
