Sacking Rennie and choosing EJ to replace him are two separate matters, and while the first one may have been a mistake, the second one was the height of stupidity – as even a superficial glance at what EJ had done to English rugby in the last 4 years would have shown.

France doesn’t need a special talent at scrum-half to beat SA. What they need is forwards fronting up at scrum time and at the breakdown, a committed defence for 80 minutes, and Jalibert and Ramos bringing their kicking boots. If they can gain parity in the forwards – a significant if admittedly – France with or without Dupont should have enough to beat this Bok side.

None of those teams would be crazy enough to throw the game, or to believe that France in the QF would be a foregone conclusion. Having said that, I do think winning this game is more important for Ireland than for SA, whose only goal and measure of success is to win the whole thing – unlike Ireland who might be reasonably happy with a maiden SF.

Ireland will want ball-in-play time to be as long as possible. FYI, bip in the latest Ireland-France game was 46 minutes. I am not convinced SA could match that.
