The Weed

The Herald Sun reported that Murray Weideman has passed away. I first saw Weideman in the late 50s at Victoria Park. We were playing…

I have always hated the Collingwood lament, having endured the ’58 to ’90 era, I have heard and to some extent taken part in it. But the Buckley years hardened me to it all. The worst period I can remember is that period. The positivity injected into the Collingwood efforts this year was just bloody wonderful. Getting better can be painful if you really want it.

I admired the way Justin Leppisch played football. You would have to think that someone who played on Wayne Carey, when Carey kicked five goals and Leppisch kicked four goals, would bring a positive attacking plan to The Club.

The Collingwood lament: If only...

I am not shattered. The drawn 1977 Grand Final shattered me. I literally had nightmares about it. Bondy in the scoreboard pocket running with the ball, uugghh! It’s impossible to express what the 1990 premiership meant, just thinking about it can make smile.

The last ten years have been abysmal, including 2018, because of the Buckley game plan. It was the worst I have ever seen, I left games early because they just looked so bad, even when they won.

I have been watching Collingwood, mostly from afar, for all of my now long life and I am very encouraged by what has been achieved this year. We have to bulk up and create depth. Collingwood will go on after we have gone, it’s pleasing to see the team turn the corner with a positive attitude and strength in the self belief.

Well done all.

Despite the heartbreak, there is plenty of cause for optimism at Collingwood

You have copped your fair share of criticism on here Les. Most of it unfair as far as I am concerned. Nothing changes if you change nothing. Doing nothing is a copper’s curse.

I think you have been absolutely accurate and correct in what you have said in this article. I also think Craig Macrea thinks along the same lines. Whilst I am surprised by the signing of McStay on the money he is supposed to have been offered, I presume they have some plan in mind.

We need a clean out of those not in the best side, or at least set a very high bar.

The analogy with Tom Hafey’s efforts is spot on. He was a good enough coach to get the best out of an ordinary bunch of players.

The complement of the second string needs to be potential talent or waiting talent. As far as possible we should avoid carrying anyone.

The Collingwood way: Is pride enough?

Might as well go with a home and way and see how that works.

How to create a fairer AFL home and away season for all

Football grounds have a feel to them. Having said that, I think Sydney should be called the Stranglers because they seem to close down every game with relentless pressure taking away time and space. Excellent coach as well. This biased supporter wants Collingwood to find a way.

So it’s Collingwood versus the SCG

I might be old and more concerned with my ticker I know, but close games aren’t a good thing. I would like to see them get hold of a good team and flog them. In the finals of course.

AFL Saturday Study: Here's how the Magpies won ANOTHER thriller... and why none of it was just luck

Good to see you Les.

AFL's new challenge: the media's rampant cesspool of bullying and vilification that threatens to become a tsunami

The Murdoch british newspapers were grubby people making a living off the misery of others. Our late, great Shane Warne was used, abused and set up by them. De Goey, in a minor way seems to have created an opportunity for a story that can be exploited. The Murdoch press has denigrated people for profit so long and so succesfully that a broader media is polluted with their presence. I don’t think De Goey is the sort of person I would be happy to have a beer with but I do believe I can paraphrase Voltaire in accepting his right to enjoy himself with his friends.

AFL's new challenge: the media's rampant cesspool of bullying and vilification that threatens to become a tsunami

I don’t particularly like De Goey. I wouldn’t be sad to see him go. However, I would like to see him sue every bloody journalist and talking head who have jumped on this story. It is, I suggest, wowserism. Frank Hardy (Power without Glory) was right about it being part of Melbourne’s make up. A young man, not too bright, is holidaying with friends and is recorded on the omnipresent mobile phone. For god’s sake, hasn’t anyone been young and not too bright. This sort over reaction says more about the stone throwers.

Media bullying of Jordan De Goey has been a disgusting witch-hunt

Its a January comment and a one eyed one at that but, I think we are in a good position to improve. The recruiting has been good, in couldn’t be worse, and there will be a keen competition for positions. That keenest desire will be important across all lines, I suggest. Macrae was a similar player to WHE, they provide the cherry on top in a good side. Perceived or real bias aside, we have an exciting list. Leppitsch and Bolton are excellent additions. Individual desire will bring out a new favourite. That’s what a pre-season is all about.

The four players who could make or break Collingwood in 2022

Les said what had to be said. Why should he reply?

It’s that time of year. Not bloody Christmas. It’s a time when the young blokes are working their guts out. I see things very positive for Collingwood. Well, much more than usual. Can’t wait to see the young recruits strut their stuff in the pre-season. It seems I’m moving further and further from my birth place, Collingwood. But Magnetic Island will do for a while. Can’t wait for the season to start.

Trade and draft review: Pies pay a high price

There is a lot to like and respect about Mason Cox. I don’t want to see him leave Collingwood. Not for selfish reasons but, because I think it would be great for Collingwood to have him be a one club player. Why give any asset to another team.

It’s my personal belief that he was wasted in the Buckley years. A determined practiced delivery to him would have achieved far more. When you consider what he has already achieved that’s something to consider.

Some people may take advantage with a quick comment, but he has proved he can cut it in the AFL. How many of us couldn’t even make the grade.

Keep big Mace, Macca, please.

MASON COX: ‘He works his arse off’: Why I’m all in on Gawn

Kennett has a giant ego and suffers from hubris just as bad as Eddie. The better deal would have been to get rid of Kennett

CONFIRMED: Clarkson departing Hawks early

He would make Mace a 50 goal forward.

CONFIRMED: Clarkson departing Hawks early

I’d rather read Les Zig’s balanced commentary than PTS constant empty comments. We needed a new coach, now we can get a better one.

Buckley stepping down as Collingwood coach

Try to put together a well argued article Peter. These pathetic criticisms of Les diminish your opinion.

Magpies board slams planned takeover

To me Les and PTS are two sides of the same coin. Forever facing away as they question how the club they both love is performing.
Les produces well-argued criticism that is consistent and monotonous to those who don’t appreciate his view.
PTS continuously in my opinion takes a stance that consistently supports the emotional and loyalty before all opinions.
It has been said in this forum many times that Les has produced so much criticism (32 is a number used recently) that he should stop, get over it, move on. That of course is up to him.
PTS as long as I have been reading these comments constantly takes the party line that a club PR person would take. So many comments that it becomes irritating in its omnipotent insider’s
desire that all should admire.
I enjoy all of Les’s comments because they mirror mine, of course. I find Pete’s comments at times irritating, because I disagree with going along, not upsetting the boat, and most of all because I value criticism.
So, Les and Pete, keep writing, keep supporting and produce criticism as you wish. It does us all good.

Political uncertainty and a lack of vision at Collingwood

Passed into history Pete. Might as well go around and shoot Wayne Harmes porch light out

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

There is some merit in this comment

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

That’s all but irrelevant now Pete

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

No.

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

Let’s see the cut of his jib then Pete

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

Tommy Hafey did it in 1977. But for Phil Carman suspension……..

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

I agree with every point you have made, Les. I fully support you in voicing your opinions. Buckley has wrecked the playing group with his lack of ability to empathise with the individual. If you wanted to explain Nathan you would be able to point to the game against PA. That would be an excellent, visual definition of his coaching.

Was he using the phone more Sunday because Wright was sitting next to him. Dunno, I do know that if Wright keeps Buckley the club is stuffed.

I hate watching Collingwood play the Buckley way. It stinks. It’s an affront to all of us.

Personally, the waste of opportunities for the forwards is a tragedy. It’s hard enough to get the ball without having the system retard you in the way that it exists today. Voss, J.Brown, Hodge, were leaders. Buckley and Hird great players only. Napoleon wanted leaders who were lucky. Nelson wanted something left to chance. They were playing for their lives, the example can be drawn onto the football field. The emotion or lack of it in the coaching box is just appalling. I was that keen on Malthouse belligerence in press conference but I had complete confidence in the certainty of his response. His emotional response as he rode the game was there for all to see.

There are a lot of theories in philosophy. This stoic approach in the club’s game plan is lacking in human emotion.

The case against reappointing Nathan Buckley

Is Les talking directly to you, PTS?

Les never fails to hit the nail on the head.

Buckley must go. It’s as simple as that. I can’t for the life of me understand anyone, other than his mates, who would want him to continue.

His replacement? I’m not keen on Clarkson. I think it should be someone who is adjudged capable of being the next Clarkson/Kennedy/Barassi/etc.

Whoever it is must bring life back into how Collingwood plays the game. Please God, it couldn’t get any worse than the majority of the last ten seasons.

Put an end to this era.

The truths some Collingwood fans have never faced
