Denialists will say “whatever, let us know when it’s fixed”, but that’s not the point – the plausible assumption here is that GA going into administration means their broadcast deal with A League did not deliver the fruits they had hoped, i.e., consumers weren’t buying the product.

News Corp are reporting that NEP are set to be announced this afternoon as the group to see out the season.

Our league can’t keep making losses like this. No one is coming to our rescue, football fans across Australia need to decide if they’re going to start tything. BUY the product, ATTEND the games. A 20-man Bull Pen at Campbelltown Stadium is not sustainable and a few thousand people tuning in on Paramount per game won’t suffice.

A-League avoids total embarrassment after broadcast partner goes belly up

It’s weird isn’t? This NZ team has frequently been described as the nation’s ‘golden generation’ of football talent, yet the results suggest anything except that.

'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark

I think a move to Denmark or Sweden would be a nice fit at his age. Crazy to think he’s 33 this year – will be in the coaching box soon enough. Perhaps take over from Veart?

'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark

In other news: New Zealand lose to Tunisia to make it one win in their last 13 matches! What the hell is going on NZF?

'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark

Arnie is delivering in the qualifiers so far and that frustrates his critics. Even when we’re average against Lebanon, we still pick up a 2-0 win. In the past, Socceroos’ teams would have nipped a draw.
Arnie is also working with a squad that is less talented than what Ange or van Marwijk had and still pulled a better WC finish – something that is often overlooked.

Get off the Socceroos' backs! One training session, a win against Lebanon and still people fail to understand Asian football

I wonder if the second division will be the turning point for this issue. Having a nationalised second tier could really propel government assistance in ways we haven’t seen for our game – infrastructure, pathway programs, major projects and events partnerships, etc. The real key is getting big crowds consistently through the gate; one of the reasons I was deflated post-WWC was that within a fortnight of the Matilda’s finishing up their tournament, the A League Women’s WU vs MC pulled a meagre >2500. We need government to see the stands packed in our top domestic competition, or we might as well just keep hoping.

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

Mauragis, Clisby, Farrell, and Garrucio all ahead of King.

Sydney FC fullback drafted into Socceroos WCQ squad after double injury blow

It’s good to see other football fans take the FTA discussion seriously. And a lot of great points in the comments. So much of the game’s future hangs on its broadcasting and coming to the lounge rooms of families who are channel flicking.

The improvements needed to bring the A-Leagues back to prominence

Well said Nick, couldn’t agree more.

Standard isn’t it. There’s football fans, then there’s Eurosnobs.

The nation has more than a century of evidence to show soccer has been behind Aussie rules and league – why is this news to you? No one here is whinging about junior registration or how EPL teams selling out stadiums – that’s always been happening. The A League is not leading the race in domestic competition and your claim it is shows how naive you are of the sporting landscape.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

You are putting words in my mouth which is disingenuous. If you’re on OzFootball, you would have seen the ridiculous comments by fans (not Jets).
I never said the A League requested government funding, stop re setting narratives Chris.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

I’ve claimed the figures I’ve found, where are yours Chris? All denial and nothing more.

Where are these multibillion football tournaments you speak of? Our top domestic echelon is on its knees.

You’re right Chris, the football economy (sarcasm). One World Cup on home soil covers the financial gap between us and the rest does it? You are perpetuating the same under-the-rock rhetoric that our game is in a great place and nothing is wrong. It’s denialism, and it holds our game back.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

7 years ago exactly. Though the AIS was never the home of football for Australia, only youth development with Lake Ginnindera billeting students. Theblast notable product was Arzani actually. My memory is hazy, but I seem to recall after ‘06 the FFA considered a permanent base in Canberra around Bruce.

I suppose Sydney or Melbourne would be it then?

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

Who mentioned COE? This is about the Jets going under because the league is not generating the money it needs to. You seem to think junior registrations via non-for-profit football clubs (that don’t event pay tax) is on par with the AFL and NRL commercial pull? What world are you living in? And no, unlike the A League, those leagues pull massive crowds not just TV viewership. Collingwood vs Sydney had a bigger attendance last weekend than the whole A League’s round combined (78,000) with an est. 15,000 travelling fans – but hey, if you think Paramount coverage and the “so many participants” of juniors is satisfactory, all power to you. I know where I would rather domestic football be.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

I think most would agree, and most will recall when there were calls in 06/07 to make Canberra’s AIS said home of football. Football Australia should initiate the project now, fight for taxpayer support soon after.

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

Chris, the A League is not generating the same revenue as the AFL and NRL. Nowhere near. The NRL generated more than $700 million in revenue alone in 2023 – that’s not including State of Origin or International tests. And that’s not currency circulation either – just revenue. One sports league in a 25 round season.
We haven’t even examined the AFL yet.
This is what the A League is up against. So you tell me: is that a silly statement? Or is the reality simply that we’re not on that level?

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

Multiple IG and FB users across OzFootball have cried that demand. Self-entitlement galore.

I’m of that wanting too, but there won’t be a fair share of that money – our code is not generating billions a year across the economy like AFL and NRL. The government will not, ever, be the difference in our game becoming a success.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

Average football fans are typically not experienced themselves in the sports business. The weighing-in of billionaires on the European stage has misguided a lot of football fans into believing the blueprint of how to firm up a football club’s future is similar to what we see in Auckland – i.e., rich tycoon rocks up, promises the world, splashes the cash and watches things unfold from afar.

That’s not how 90 per cent + of professional club operate.

My question for the A League community is this: are the Newcastle Jets football club screaming for help or are the people of Newcastle screaming for help? The Jets have been trouble for years – Novacastrian locals knew that – yet McDonald Jones’ Stadium scrapes in just a few thousand per home game. By comparison, the Newcastle Knights – not in a financial crisis – push the 15k to 20k mark regularly.

Taking the anti-establishment stance is an easy cop out – smash the governance of the game and argue this is a “top-down” issue.

Stuff that. Locals have a choice to enjoy their weekend football. If they’re not going to matches and supporting their local club, that’s their prerogative. No reason other entities should grind themselves into debt for the sake of keeping a club emblem alive when there are other localities who are pitching their case to win a license.

It’s the reaction of some football fans that’s most baffling – “bring in the government”. What? When did NRL or AFL teams in debt ever get bailed by Federal cabinet? Further, why would the taxpayer think to splurge cash on a game that garners poor attendance?

A lot of “football fans” are happy to wear their Milan and PSG jerseys on the streets but have never attended a domestic fixture in their life. Stop smashing the men and women dedicated to the A League, and start ripping your Eurosnob mates who get up at 3am for a Spurs game but won’t attend a Jets game.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

If they had an extra five matches on top of what they have, potentially. But they’ve left it too late to make a good run of it I think. They’ll need a stronger CB pairing next season, too many goals leaked and also not enough bite in the final third. When Penha is firing they look great, but without him there really isn’t anyone else who has dragged them over the line this season.

'From the basement to the penthouse': Forget the wooden spoon, can Western United make the top six?

Frustrating, yes. But as players age they tend to have more bargaining power when it comes to national team selection. We still have two years until the World Cup, at which point several absentees will be playing top division football across Europe and settled. That’s important.

'People need to understand the pressure': Arnold rails at overseas clubs in Socceroos squad squeeze

Rudan not fronting the press was telling.

Also, De Marigny’s handling of the media as a fill-in was below standard – couldn’t answer the most straight-forward evening question: “where is Marko?” To respond as if the elephant in the room was irrelevant was again consistent with the victim mentality WSW have cultivated.

This isn’t a personnel issue, it’s a leadership crisis.

Seventh heaven for City as Rudan no-shows presser after horror defeat

Shambles. As soon as Rudan and the club started pointing the finger at the APL, then the officials, then venue security, you could just see where this was going. There’s a huge victim mentality at WSW and its showing. For Rudan to dodge the cameras when his leadership is needed most is disappointing.

One day, Grem. We’ll get there, and all this patience would have paid off.

Does the A-League do enough to nurture creative players?
