The January transfer window following a World Cup is seldom silent.

It is a key month for clubs worldwide – and for players too. So far this window, Mathew Ryan and Garang Kuol have completed their moves to the Netherlands and Scotland respectively.

But the question is begged: who are those on the periphery who deserve or need a transfer?

Marco Tilio

Though it’s unlikely to occur this January, Tilio presents as an obvious inclusion. The young Socceroo possesses the technical skill sets required to play at the highest level and continues to mature nicely at Melbourne City. At 21 years of age, Tilio offers the buyer a long-term prospect with plenty of polish in the final third. He’d be an ideal fit for the flair and pace of continental Europe.

Joe Gauci

He’s developing steadily in Adelaide and is a likely candidate for future Socceroos campaigns. In the 2022-23 season thus far Gauci has maintained his starting XI place with several eye-catching performances and clean sheets to his name. Wherever home may be after Adelaide, Gauci must accrue the minutes required to stay in national team contention. Ideally Gauci would arrive on the shores of Europe. He’s a potential fit for the English Championship or Scottish Premiership.

Jake Brimmer

For controversial reasons, now may be the best time for Jake Brimmer to depart Melbourne Victory. The Johnny Warren medallist, one of the league’s most capable midfielders, has not been able to replicate the form of his career-best season. With the added agony of Victory experiencing some of the darkest days in its history, does Brimmer probe the transfer market to capture the form we know he can deliver?

Daniel Arzani

He’s a case of needing the transfer rather than deserving one. Daniel Arzani is the enigma that Australian fans (myself included) lose precious sleep over. Since returning to the A-League, Arzani has shown the same qualities – in patches – that had fans buzzing several seasons past. Now in his mid-20s, Arzani is nearing the crossroad to truly realise his potential.

Samuel Silvera

The idea of losing both Kuol and Silvera in succession would deeply wound Mariners fans. However, Silvera’s recent form is attracting increased adoration for his ability on the ball and his attacking prowess. He had the courage to try his hand at Portugal. At 22 years old, perhaps a reattempt is not far away. Nearing finals, expect Nick Montgomery to increase Silvera’s minutes and give him licence to roam.
