Brian: I am NOT the Messiah!
Arthur: I say you are Lord, and I should know. I’ve followed a few.
(With thanks to the old chaps of Monty Python.)

Five things: What Beale has over other golden oldies, double pain for Brumbies as Blues expose Australia's biggest weakness

Not necessarily in the context of rugby. If the planning was about your forwards, would it not be ‘forward planning’? Or perhaps that should be ‘forwards planning’.
[Edit: Although I do think Cron was searching for a temporal distinction for plans about the immediate season and what comes later, i.e. between near-term and medium-term.]

Five things: What Beale has over other golden oldies, double pain for Brumbies as Blues expose Australia's biggest weakness

It’s worth remembering that effectiveness of attacking rucks also depends crucially on what referees allow the defenders to get away with.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

As someone who’d had shingles said to me, “The thing with shingles is it won’t kill you, but when you’ve got it, you wish it would.”

Brumbies 'systematically taken apart by the Blues' in 'non-contest' as Larkham's men cop huge reality check

I’m not 100% certain but I think it is 5 years to qualify by residency but only 3 years stand down time after playing for another nation if you are qualified by birth.

Aussie-born England capped rake Nic Dolly signs with Force ... and he'll soon be eligible for the Wallabies

That surely is ‘the plan’. Let’s hope it survives contact with the enemy.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies land final piece of coaching puzzle as ex-Lion signs on ahead of showpiece event

Four tasty matches this round – all for different reasons: (7 vs. 1) the competition leading Hurricanes facing a challenge no one has managed so far this year – beating the Drua in Fiji; (6 vs. 10) the Reds looking to get some momentum back into their play while managing a bunch of changes to their line-up against the struggling HIghlanders; (2 vs. 3) the Brumbies have built nicely into their season but face a stiff test in Auckland against the Blues; (12 vs. 11) and the Crusaders across the Nullabor taking on the Force see both teams fielding a mix of old and new.

Super Rugby teams week 9: Beale back for first time in 1494 days, Reds make 6 changes, Wallaby returns for Brumbies

Drummond looked better with Mounga outside him, but that’s true of plenty of #9’s.

The forgotten leader Razor must pick for the All Blacks - and why it could change who wears the prized No.10 jersey

Coker, given the choice between a swinging arm to the jaw or an elbow to the back of the head, I’ll take the hit in the jaw because it is less likely to kill me. This statement is not a joke. Tate’s victim didn’t require 20 stitches in his head. You need to lighten up on your partisanship and look at what actually happened.

'Not ideal': Reds star duo cop Super Rugby bans after red cards - but where's the consistency?

The consistency created by using a fairly strict system of precedents is what gives confidence that the system is broadly fair and fit for purpose. That doesn’t stop various people (media/politicians/activists) beating up misapprehensions about exceptional cases or taking ordinary cases out of context to create controversies for their own gain at the expense of the community’s confidence in the system. [I carried on quite a bit from here but it got too long to be a reasonable comment to read on a phone.]

It’ll be interesting to see how Thomas manages and also interesting to see the new reserve #9, Werchon.

I reckon everyone gets that discount so long as they don’t march into the hearing and declare that the guy they hit had it coming. It’s a type of kabuki theatre where everyone knows the story-line. The guilty party pleads early and makes the right remorseful gestures and World Rugby’s “we’re really serious about looking after players” 6 week suspension becomes “we hope you still think we’re serious” 3 weeks, except if it was a high tackle or ruck entry, the professional player gets a short course on technique and the suspension is “we’re not sure ourselves if we expect anyone to take us seriously” 2 weeks.
I like McDermott and McReight as players and the incidents they got pinged for were probably not the most dangerous things that happened on the field over the weekend. But, they can’t complain about how things have worked out.
(Their suspensions are inline with my expectations for how things are meant to be adjudicated. Some others this season have been on the low side of expectations – and not just the Fijian players – thinking particularly of Owen Franks’s late high ruck entry hitting a ‘Canes player in the head that somehow started at 4 weeks x50% = 2 weeks minus a week for a coaching intervention for the 36 year old World Cup winning prop, so he sat out just one match.)
McDermott and McReight’s teammates, coach and fans should be disappointed and those players will have something to prove when they return.

'Not ideal': Reds star duo cop Super Rugby bans after red cards - but where's the consistency?

To be fair to the Rebels players, the interviews after the match on Saturday night showed they are all keenly aware that they have tougher matches ahead. And I’m not trying to be funny, but I think their easiest remaining match is their away fixture in Christchurch.

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

Did that car rally start and finish at a residential facility at UQ?

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

There was still one Brumbies supporter who had a crack at him in their fixture against the Tahs. They just can’t let go of their broken entitlement in that SRAU final. And I still think Berry should have handed out more cheese to Brumbies players for cynical infringements in the last 10 minutes of that match – such is the lot of rugby refs. He is no doubt a better ref now than then.

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

I think it is fair to say that a neutral rugby supporter, or someone who doesn’t follow rugby, will generally have a better time watching a match with 83 points scored than one with 31 points. I’m a Reds supporter and I certainly enjoyed the Tahs/Crusaders match far more than the Moana/Reds. Of course, if the results had been the other way around as I had tipped, I would have been far happier altogether.

The Wrap: Crusaders' shot clock fiasco and shhh, don’t put the moz on Darby

Daddy RA has picked up the tab for the Tahs, although I suppose if they have thick enough hides, there is no embarrassment.

Just checked the Roar’s SR Tipping ladder. Congrats to GP and Muzzo who appear to be the only tipsters in the top 50 to have jagged a point from today’s matches. 😢
I watched MP vs. Reds to my regret. Will have a look at Tahs doubling up on the Crusaders tomorrow.
Congrats to Tahs supporters. Celebrate the win! (And let go of the dark thoughts about not backing them in the tips.)

'Last few years have been hell': Iceman 2.0 Harrison gets 'dream come true' in Tahs' stunning golden point win

I am biased being a Reds supporter, but I agree entirely.

Huge coup sees Wallabies hooker coming home to Super Rugby on long-term deal, with World Cup in sights

I hope this reads as an excellent comment after Friday evening. 👍

Super Rugby teams round 8: Tahs drop Marky Mark, Kellaway returns for Rebels, HMP replaces Lynagh

Only understandable in the context of squaring off against Levi Aumua. Levi might be a bit more than a handful for the younger Tahs centres. Perese’s defence isn’t good, but that’s down to reads, not tackle efforts.

Super Rugby teams round 8: Tahs drop Marky Mark, Kellaway returns for Rebels, HMP replaces Lynagh

Ethan de Groot is sitting on the bench in the first half so we all get to see him scrumming against Taniela Tupou. Excellent.
Also looking forward to seeing an interesting battle out on the wings with Lancaster & Anderson vs. Nareki & Tavatavanawai. I don’t think either side will want to leave much room for them to wind up.
This should be an interesting round: 2nd (undefeated) vs. 4th; 5th vs. 8th; 6th vs. 9th; 10th vs. 11th.
The Reds are looking for a reset after their upset in Perth and narrow loss to the Brumbies; the Hurricanes and Chiefs promises to be a high quality match between genuine title contenders; the Rebels at home are looking for a third win in a row against the lowest ranked NZ team; and either of the Crusaders and the Tahs will have a second win on Saturday night. Yay!

Super Rugby teams round 8: Tahs drop Marky Mark, Kellaway returns for Rebels, HMP replaces Lynagh

Alex Hodgman (eligible through his dad being born in Melbourne – and not having played for AB’s last few years) might play himself into contention. He should be back on the park for the Reds in the next few weeks.

'Needs to be considered': Bell out of Super Rugby season as ex-Wallaby suggests left-field positional switch

As much as we punters should say Gordon needs to work on his goal kicking, it shouldn’t be unsaid that a bunch of other Wallaby contenders should be working on their goal kicking. At various times we have had Wallaby goal kickers at fullback, wing and in the centres. There is no law of rugby stopping anyone from stepping up to the mark. Why aren’t there more backline players in this goal kicking conversation? (And forwards could give it a go too – we can all remember at least one who did.)

Five things we learned: One area Gordon must fix to convince Wallabies boss, ABs bruiser should be on notice

Just a heads-up Christy: this didn’t start with the late hit on Lolesio in Round 2.
Rivez Reihana of the Crusaders. Round 1. Smashed by Finau and missed a month of rugby as a result.
He’d just got a touch from his left hand on a high pass thrown past him so was technically ‘in possession’ although everyone including Finau knew the football wasn’t in the same postcode when Reihana was hit with a very hard outside-in tackle just below the shoulder line. It was just after 50 minutes into the game when the Crusader had started to look better and then their young #10 was off the park and stayed off for a month.
The same style of tackle (late, very hard and just below the shoulder line) then happened to Lolesio in Round 2 and Tom Lynagh in Round 3. The Chiefs Round 4 match was against the Drua and I didn’t see Finau try it then.
Virtually every other player I have seen in the tournament will slow their roll and start pulling out of the contact when they know they are “a bit late” to the tackle whether the opponent is a prop or a halfback. Finau in these instances has very clearly been looking to rattle or damage the opposition #10. The line between ‘rattle’ and ‘damage’ is the line between legitimate old-school rugby and something that needs to disappear fast from a professional tournament with pretensions to being as good as any in the world.
