Tony – what did you think about the standard of refereeing? I thought that it was pretty good over the last 3 games; the referee in the Japan game was the best I thought.

I remember when we first joined Asia we got an absolute caning from the refs. That doesn’t seem to be the case any more. I’m not sure if the refs got used to us, or we got used to them.

Redemption all round as Jesus sends the Roos to Rio

I’d like to see hoops. The A-League needs hoops. And free-to-air coverage.

Fans want a club, not a name, that fills them with Pride

Huzzah!

Wanderers for mine.

Fans want a club, not a name, that fills them with Pride

‘Greater Western Sydney’ is one of the worst names in any code. Who on earth says that they are from greater western Sydney?

It’s like some PR bloke in Melbourne got on to google maps and said, Jeez, it’s big!’ and they went with it.

I agree with the article.

As gutted I was at the time (and I still haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it again), in hindsight I am glad that all the WC money and interest didn’t come into the game at the stage.

Before the Crawford report, the game wasn’t quite ready to take off. Most of the goodwill generated by the WC would have been squandered and would have delayed the circumstances that gave rise to the report being commissioned.

How Peter Hore has helped Aussie football

My Peter Hoare story:

I was watching a band called the Simpletons play at a pub in Newtown. During one of the songs, Peter Hoare, dishevelled and covered in tatts, got up on the stage and starting screaming into one of the microphones to the bemusement of the band. After about half a minute, he just lstopped and left the stage. Guitarist Darren Hanlon walked up to his mike and said, “Thank You Satan.”

The FFA Cup should replace the finals series. The business end of the FFA Cup (semi finals + final) will take place after the A-League season. Both cup purists and Aussie semi-finals lovers should be happy with this.

A League teams should not be involved until the final rounds. Eg 12 A league teams will feature in the round of 16. State League clubs can fight out for the remaining 4 spots, perhaps using existing cup/league competitions. This may make state league comps a bit more interesting for players and supporters alike.

Perhaps the first few FFA Cups should not feature state league clubs at all – just to fine tune it.

The preliminary rounds should be during the season, ideally on weekends instead of match rounds, although the A-Leaguse is already having difficulty fitting its season in, so this might not be possible.

The home side will be team that is placed higher on A-League ladder after all teams have played each other twice (home and away), which is when the first rounds featuring A – League teams will be. This may make for some interesting mid-season games, with teams trying to get higher than their cup opponents. The home teams for the semi finals will depend on ladder position at the end of the season, which may mean that league positions down the ladder will matter. Perhaps these games can also be seeded.

The FFA Cup will be televised just like the finals series is televised now. the games involving state league clubs provide a bit of novelty value. If there is a game involving state league club vs state league club, this might have to be moved to a more TV friendly ground, but there would still be interest.

The winner of the FFA Cup will get an ACL place, like the current winner of the finals series. If the winner of the FFA cup is a state league club, I’d love to see that club play in Asia, but I suspect that the AFC might have restrictions that will not allow it.

We need a local FA Cup, but it must be done well

I agree that the FFA should help clubs secure genuine marquee players.

It is the other clubs that benefit from playing against a ‘bums on seats’ type player. Casual fans in Sydney might front up to see Robbie fowler play for the Fury when they come down once or twice a season. I reckon most of them won’t be there week in, week out to see him if he signs for Sydney. The benefit to the club that has signed the marquee player quickly diminishes.

The money for this should be set aside from the new TV deal. The real question is whetherd a FFA marquee subsidy system should replace or be in addition to the existing marquee player set up?

FFA must get serious about marquee players

Kilkenny doesn’t appear to be liked by Arnold (after being totally shafted at the Olympics), and in any event would be well down the Socceroos pecking order for his position.

There are aren’t too many spots up for grabs and you’d reckon Garcia would be more likely at RM.

Will these Socceroos make the plane?

I agree that ordinarily Petkovic would be second choice. I just can’t work out why Pim hasn’t picked him for Kuwait. It would have been a great opportunity to give him some more international experience in the lead up to the WC. Maybe he is injured? If so, I couldn’t find any record of it.

Of the rest, Fedirici is in the best form.

Who'll be going to South Africa? Part Three

Hi-5 is no chance*.

Might sneak into next year’s Asian Cup squad though.

*Unless he starts against Kuwait and plays well. The starter will be the player Pim thinks is the A-League’s best. That will put him in the frame – one of 5 players vying for 2 reserve spots.

Is a football contract really that different from other employment contracts?

If an employee generally gets a better offer somewhere else, they are free to take it. If anything football contracts are much more restrictive, with transfer windows, clubs having the right to give (or withhold) permission for others to speak to contracted players, and salary caps.

Perhaps outside of football it’s harder for an employer to sack an employee, but Frank Farina’s recent legal action against the Roar shows that football clubs don’t have an unfettered right to terminate an employment contract.

What's in a football contract?

So this explains you trolling Part 2. Petty, but each to their own.

I’m no fan of Kisnorbo, but he’s been a Socceroo regular for a little while now. I’m a big Spiranovic fan, and would love to see him make the squad. However, he’s certainly a fringe player. Kisnorbo isn’t.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

I like Troisi, and I think Pim does too.

He’s slipped off the radar recently though. I would have thought that he would have been picked against Kuwait if he was genuinely in the frame.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part Two

I reckon Brosque’s first touch this season has been excellent.

His positioning is not so bad. If he can have someone decent behind him, he can get through a defence. Juninho was perfetct for him.

His poor finishing wouldn’t matter so much if Bridge was more clinical.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part Two

Just by saying it doesn’t make it so.

As much as you might wish it otherwise, Pim’s already got ‘KISNORBO, P’ down on the team sheet.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

I’ve submitted part 2, so hopefully that will be up soon.

Working on Part 3 (the goalkeepers) at the moment. Interested that both you and David picked Covic. His league is on winter break at the moment – if he was a WC chance, why not call him up for the Kuwait game? Is he injured?

Anyone know why Petkovic wasn’t selected? Turkey is also on a break.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

If Bresciano moves to the left, I think you’ll find that Emerton will play up on the right, with Wilkshire at right back and Rhys Williams on the bench in cover. That doesn’t leave much room for Garcia, or Sterjovski (who would fit Pim’s system better).

Wilkshire has impressed at DM, but Culina and Jedinak would be in front of him, as would Valeri if he makes the cut.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

I would love for Viduka to return, and I reckon Pim would too.

What chance that he’s as big as a house after 6 months off? He would give new meaning to the term ‘target man’.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

He’s been solid rather than spectacular. It is something of a shock that a player in England’s third flight is a lock-in for our world cup squad.

Who will be going to South Africa? Part One

On Fox last night, Ross Aloisi said there were 2 spots up for grabs. I reckon that’s my 3 spots less Vidosic (or possibly Valeri).

It would be great for someone like Tommy Oar or Ben Kantarovski to go, but 2 spare spots doesn’t leave much room for a ‘development player’.

In 2006, a couple of young players joined the squad for the training camps. That was good idea that the FFA will hopefully implement again.
