I wonder how much the injuries a few years ago affected his confidence? I believe he has always had the talent to get there, but serious injuries like he has had, must surely have made him a bit tentative coming back at first, hopefully he is now past that.

A few months ago in one of the English language papers from Japan, an article seemed to hint that the Top League was in talks to be included from 2022 onwards in a competition with NZ and Australia. Maybe this puts a little flesh on those bones, as a hint as to what may be, post pandemic.
