Waz,Just a couple of clarifying points: I hope you are not holding up Maccarone as a striker role model for Australian kids. The deft touches are nice but apart from that ???????????? That part of his game certainly sets an example but other parts do not including his lack of mobilty.

As regards the use of offside there is a big difference between tactical offside and the ability to get back onside. My comments refer to the latter. Maccarone walks back because he has not got the physical capability to do otherwise. Sometimes he cannot get into scoring positions in the box because he cannot keep up with play (something noted by our esteemed Fox commentators recently). If you are not in an onside position you cannot defend, something which is expected of the modern day striker although I acknowledge that there would be exceptions to this rule if the team balance is right.

Note your comments about McLaren leaving but the reports I have read indicate that the Roar offer was and I quote “disgusting” and “highly disrespectful”. $200000 on offer for the one of the A league’s highest goalscorers? He was made an offer he had to refuse, so in my book he was let go. In addition he was someone who could be relied upon in the future as a building block to long term success. History will now define the wisdom of that decision for both player and club.

Interesting comment about penalty kicks. The referee, as hard as it may be, must decide if the handball is deliberate. It is not automatic. If they cannot do the job then they should be trained or replaced by people who will.

Although I agree with your comments regarding getting the right players to service Maccarone’s game perhaps the better plan would be to get a striker which would suit the capabilities of the rest of the team.

Sorry Waz but Maccarone is not what the Roar need. They need someone who is mobile, fit, skilful, hard working, get to the ball first, good in the air and can really hold up a ball. Maccarone only has a bit of skill, not sufficient in today’s game. Suggest you contrast his performance with that of Keogh who demonstrates everything which Maccarone is not. That’s the kind of marquee required by the Roar not somebody who can’t even get back onside. Questions really need to be asked about that acquisition especially when McClaren was let go. How does Maccarone benefit the team over McClaren? The Roar need 11 players on the paddock for the whole game, not someone who needs to have spells. Take your point that he has some nice touches. He should come on as a sub for the last 20 mins. To correct you about handball, it is only a penalty if it is a deliberate action. Wont comment about the incident to which you refer. The problem with most refs and pundits is that they don’t understand that rule. The offside decision to which you refer was bot only wrong but in direct contradiction to the FIFA directive which indicates that any benefit of doubt must go to the attacking team. Most officials apply the opposite. , as clearly was the case last night.

In recent games North has been implicated in poor defending causing goals. Last week, I think?, he showed lack of judgement by unduly committing himself, not keeping on his feet allowing attacker free run behind the defence leading to a goal. This week, he was caught flat footed when the ball was crossed from the right, the ball skidded off his head leading to the headed goal. If a shake up is required Roar could do worse than giving Bowles a go. Talking about shakeups surely automatic selections such as Broich, McKay, Petratos (he can’t head or tackle), McLaren should be reconsidered. Broich although still a class act, is no longer the player he once was and is possibly now best served as an impact player for the last half hour. What does McKay actually do during a game? Does he win balls, does he shoot?, can he head? The time for being selected on reputation is over. The Roar needs to start planning for next season now and suitable steps must be taken now even if it means established players sit on the bench. More of yesterday’s lethargic display simply cannot be an option.

Highlights: Jets stun Roar with 3-2 comeback

Evan a good article but perhaps a touch overanalysed because City did not win when they should have won in a canter.Would this article have been written if City won as they should have? Having watched the game again, although Shaun Evans did help to make the game the spectacle it was his inexperience did show. Whilst no doubt subject to contention Cahill’s disallowed goal should in my view have been allowed. Cahill completely outfoxed, outchallenged and outfmuscled Djulbic who in the end was forced to bend over making it look as if Cahill had climbed over him. I don’t think too many people would have objected had the goal stood. The penalty at the end of the game should not have been awarded despite the fact that Djulbic lashed out at Brandon. This was because Brandon clearly fouled (poleaxed) Djulbic in the preceding action sparking the retaliation byDjulbic. The correct action to be taken by a referee in this situation would have been to award a free kick to Perth (not a penalty to City), book Brandon for the initial incident and red card them both for the kicking out at each other. However as stated elsewhere he could have kept them on the pitch if he wanted to. My biggest criticism of Shaun last night was the awarding of petty free kicks (stopping the flow of the game) and awarding free kicks when the team which had suffered the infringement had possession of the ball. I have always been a great believer in referees undertaking coaching courses to a sufficient standard where they would be taught the underlying principles of the game. The number one principle of defence is delay. So if a referee blows up unnecessarily this assists the defence although the team on the ball may well have been the team which had been infringed. The referee in effect becomes the first defender for the defence clearly not the function of the referee. As each game is subject to a referee’s inspection it would be useful albeit controversial if the assessment was published so that spectators can understand how referees are rated and the reasons for the rating. My understanding is that referees are a fairly autonomous body who march to their own tune. Time that changed so that referees are accountable and meet the demands of the professional era.

City and Kilkenny should be blaming themselves, not the refs

JB, I think we are all aware that the problems which needed to be fixed did not rest with the goalkeeper.
However Aloisi’s explanation merely highlights the Roar’s current difficulties writ large. In the Roar team apparently you get picked on past reputation rather than present day performance as illustrated by the midfield retaining their places when they have not scored a goal between them all season. (absent Petratos’s couple of goals if you count him as a midfielder). If you know you will be picked in the team irrespective of performance neither is it an incentive to up performance nor the team by definition cannot improve and grow. (Ironically Young’s performances throughout the season may have assisted this team selection policy). It must also be demoralising to other players on the outer who consequently have less incentive to challenge for a place. How can a club grow in such a situation? For the Roar to move forward there needs to be a sea change in mentality and culture, starting with giving players a chance to replace consistent non performers irrespective of vintage. This approach may upset a few established players but the manager must deal with the situation before him not look at past performance to solve present day problems. Never was the old adage ‘you are only as good as your last game” more relevant to the Roar’s present predicament.

A couple of points: Try having a football game without referees – you must have them. Secondly as Bill Shankly alluded, the trouble with referees is that they know the rules but do not understand the game. Referees, particularly at the senior level should be required to undertake coaching courses to at least the level where they are required to understand the football principles and strategies. A case in point is delay which is generally regarded as the first objective of a defending team. How often does a referee assist the offending team by blowing up unnecessarily for free kicks or allow the offender to “stand” on the ball without sanction. Referees should be run by the FFA, not the referees federation to ensure that the interests of the game as a whole are of primary concern not unaccountable vested interests within a particular section.

Just what level of respect should a referee expect?

To sign Keogh, the amount of $150000 allegedly paid to a third party (in addition to his disclosed salary) would logically have been negotiated right at the outset. If that is the case then the deception was deliberate right from the start of the season and therefore it would seem fair that the Glory be penalised likewise (right from the start of the season). There is also issues associated with payment of tax. To not pay tax properly payable is serious and that in itself brings the game into disrepute. However we really need the facts and the Glory should be presumed innocent of any wrongdoing pending full disclosure.
