Imagine being a player for the Rebels. What are you even playing for? Maybe to try and attract a spot on a roster somewhere else next year? Feel bad for them

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

Great answer. Completely agree.

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

I think picking best players even if they are in OS comps is a must – and I feel overseas comps will develop the players better than getting flogged in SR by kiwi teams each week. But I’m not sure even then the Wallabies can get back to being in the top 6. What I am musing about is can RA find a way to be financially viable as a tier 2 team – playing other tier 2 teams to get some wins and fans back on board etc?

Can rugby survive as a professional sport in Australia if it can only operate as a tier 2 nation?

I wonder what really is realistic? I think perhaps snagging a test against Wales and one against Argentina this winter might be it. Everyone is ranked above us for upcoming games so we are theoretically the underdog in all these tests.

'Not expecting miracles': Schmidt tempers Wallabies hopes as coach outlines No.1 priority

Should be financially feasible too. SR teams would keep getting flogged as only have junior players I guess , but they’re getting flogged now. And with OS trained players coming in, hopefully see an improvement in Wallaby performances.

CONFIRMED: Rebels fall into voluntary administration as Rugby Australia seeks 'sustainable and successful future'

The relentless flogging of the Aus SR teams year in and out has to be addressed urgently imo

Rugby Australia is back where they hoped they would never return - and their next move could make or break the game

Coach locked in. Can we start to discuss the need for a Carter-esque kicker? Can’t see us shifting up the rankings unless we can play for and convert the 3 pointers like the winning teams do!

COMMENT: In trading Greatest Showman for 'boring' and 'pragmatic' Sleepy Joe, RA gambling with game's future

And they went within a hair’s breadth of making the final! Winning rugby is needed more than anything right now in Aus in my view. If boring wins, bring on the boring I say!

Hard to argue with any of this. I’m not sure whether SR was the cause of the decline or a symptom of a broader decline that incudes the Wallabies etc. Good points though – and it would certainly be worth imo trying something completely different to see if get a different result with the Wallabies.

A disastrous decline: 10 Years since the Waratahs won the Super Rugby title and reasons behind growing list of problems

The Rebels should be playing in a 8/10 team domestic based rugby completion at an economic level that the sport can sustain, a structure that if anyone has noticed works quite well in Australia.

Great point. We need to imo accept the realities of where we are actually at, stop the floggings by NZ teams and start to create something more in line with what these teams can actually compete with.

Pressure Points: Kevin's conundrum as 2024 threatens clash of culture vs clash of results at the Rebels

Tough ask though I think cs. But agree we should go for it. Be interesting to know what the KPI will be for incoming coach over next 12 months? 51 percent plus wins? Better than 38%? Improve ranking into top 8, or top 5? Going to be fascinating period

RA to begin hunt for Wallabies coach imminently after securing key man, Schmidt keen as Nucifora talks continue

My concern is that “running rugby” is losing rugby nowadays. If the Wallabies don’t start winning soon, there won’t be a tier 1 revival. Might already be too late for that. All just my views, and I know not shared by all

The floggings of Aus teams by NZ have to be stopped ASAP in my view.

Fears for Rebels' future as debt threatens their Super Rugby existence - but CEO says 'we will be fine'

Agree things not looking good. I read somewhere that the world rugby was concerned about the 2027 world cup. I think there is probably real concern about aus rugby in general. I feel one of the options is to rebuild Aus rugby from the standpoint of it being a tier 2 nation now. A much more modest business pehaps? Series against teams we can actually compete against such as Japan, Fiji etc? Drop SR in favour of an internal comp on a lesser scale etc. Imo the whole operating model beeds to be recut in light of current realities

SA showed us how winning is done in the RWC, but I get the feeling its not a popular approach for Wallaby fans. I’m happy with basic rugby with lots of 3 pointers if it gets us winning again.

'Everyone's in the hunt': RA won't rule out stunning Wallabies return after Cheika departs Argentina role

Agree but I just don’t feel rugby rates well enough anymore to create those stars in Australia. There’s been decades of Bledisloe failure and then a lack of SR competiveness contributing. I guess you could pick a player and spend millions trying to create a profile for them but do RA have the money? Also we don’t seem to be seeing a natural star candidate rising up througg the talent ranks. Someone who is the best player in world kind of thing to get behind.

Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke

I find it hard to see what NZ is getting out of playing Aus teams at the moment. Sure it’s good for confidence I guess continually flogging Aus teams . But not sure it’s helping their game

Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke

Don’t care who the coach is so long as they play conservative rugby focusing on discipline/defence, foward dominance, and a goal kicker who can slot 3 pointers from all over the park. Let’s get the Wallabies winning again.

'He's up for it': Why ex-Boks World Cup-winner Jake White should be on the Wallabies coaching hit list

If it’s bad for Australian rugby to have it’s teams continually flogged, and there’s no obvious way to rapidly get these teams competitive, isn’t the only solution to get rid of super rugby? (Unless, as others have suggested, they share the players around)

Trans-Tasman bosses meet to help 'reignite the flame' in Super Rugby as key areas to fix game highlighted

Good points. They really do need to address the Aus teams win rates to get fans back in my view. Who wants to see their teams flogged year in and year by NZ in an uncompetitive comp? Can;t see NZ wanting to lose their dominance. How to solve? Perhaps 3 domestic comps (Aus, NZ, Pacific) with the winner of each to play off in a series in June each year? Just a suggestion – but it would limit the times we get beaten by NZ each year. I feel they need to try something new.

Really agree JN. I actually think that winning at the 15’s version is about goal kicking. SA has just given a master class in it. And I think it has always been that way. I feel Australia HAS to start winning again – and that means getting a Dan Carter style kicker as part of the program – in my view. I would rather see us winning kicking penalties than losing trying to score tries. I’m over that.

Rugby needs a revolution - if the game is to endure then penalties must be scrapped for all but three reasons

In my opinion the Wallabies should be focused on trying to develop the worlds best kicker.

A suggestion: TMO officals are anonymous. On field ref required to refer potentially contentious issues to anonymous TMO. E.g ref says ” sorry everyone that it’s a red card but that is what the anonymous TMO has ruled. Nothing I can do” etc

Rugby News: RWC final TMO quits over 'torrent of abuse', Wallabies Grand Slam tour touted, Fiji lock facing jail

Thanks Barry for highlighting kickers. I would rather the current focus on finding the next coach was actually spent on finding (developing) a Dan Carter level kicker, but that’s just my view. I believe the contribution of that level of excellence in goal kicking would provide a greater contribution to the Wallabies than the difference between head coach candidate A or B.

Cheers to Phil: Waugh's leadership the missing ingredient but Wallabies could do with a 'secret sauce'
