It was Mal and Grant that were calling for Trell to get suspended. That’s says enough. He may be in a loser environment now but he has enough rooster in him to win us origin. Pick him because he was once a chook, and forget about the toxicity that he has experienced recently.

'100%': Mitchell wants in for Origin - but ban looms as hip drop drama sours Souths' win over Parra

Robinson is cooking up a style of play, high powered carries, knock down the front door and force your will on the opposition. I’m still not convinced this stands up against the top top teams (storm, panthers), but it’s better than most teams where you can’t see any identity or pathways to building a style that can compete with the top.

Internet sookery will mean that many complain about this signing and console themselves with narrative that Fifita is a bad signing. The reality is that this is a great signing, when a player who can be the best in their position becomes available at a discount, you sign them (if you can). When that player is 24 years old, you don’t worry about your make up, you sign. And then you laugh while opposition fans sook and whinge about it.

Does anyone else get the feeling he’s trying to use the Souths links to get other offers?

Last week? This Week? Next week? Classic Bennett presser leaves more questions than answers on Souths future

As a Roosters fan, I sincerely hope that Souths don’t make any changes to their roster or coaching staff.

Storm slaughter second-rate Souths as 'a myriad of errors' hammer the final nail into Demetriou's coaching coffin

Given the expectations on this team and what they delivered until late July, most clubs would fall apart. Most coaches wouldn’t be able to deal with the pressure. You don’t have to look that far on the other side of Anzac parade to see the truth of that. It is a testament to the foundations that Trent Robinson has built into this clubs DNA that they are showing the grit and heart to win matches like this. Very, very proud to be a roosters fan today.

ANALYSIS: Redemption for Walker as Roosters lose Manu, Suaalii and Teddy - but pull off all-time epic finals win

Robbo dropped Latrell in his second year. He dropped Manu as well. Pretty standard procedure from a coach who has brought quite a few superstars of the game into first grade.

ANALYSIS: The worst collapse ever? Souths miss finals as Walker powers Chooks to famous win

The Roosters defence looks good enough to be competitive against the teams in 5-8 in the finals. Walker and Keary were brilliant in attack and they stood up defensively. One glaring weakness is their long kicking game. That period from the 50th – 70th minute where Souths had the momentum, the Chooks couldn’t get out of their end and they couldn’t rely on a big kick to swing the momentum.

If they make the finals they are the team you don’t want to play if you finish 5th or 6th. Can’t see them going much further than the second week of finals but with their roster, who knows.

Definitely feels a bit like a loss. But to keep perspective, retaining the Ashes in England is no mean feat. This generation of players have kept them safe in Australian hands for close to a decade.
Fair play to England, they held their nerve today and took their chances. They play a great brand of cricket and it’s great to see the interest this series has garnered in England where cricket sometimes struggles for the headlines.
The ball change debacle is one of the biggest umpiring howlers I’ve ever seen. You can understand making incorrect decisions under pressure and on the run, but they had plenty of time to get it right. It swung this match completely. Very disappointing from an Aussie perspective but good on England for making the most of it.
It’s been a great series, I’m kind of glad it’s over. Has been exhausting keeping up with it. Test cricket is the best cricket.

Wonderful Woakes and Bairstow stunner sink Aussies as ball change debate, Stokes catch howler end Ashes in drama

Wall to Wall criticism. Constant barrage from the comms and media. He lost a toss that he needed to win. England had all the conditions, other than a 20 minute period.

But he scored more runs than his 3 most famous bats combined. He took 4 crucial wickets when his team desperately needed them, including producing the best ball of the year. And then he hit the winning runs.

Caption Pat! Thank you. You are an Australian cricketing legend.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC! Clutch Cummins sees Aussies home in Ashes instant CLASSIC

But why? Why do you need to hate someone to play your best against them? Some of the most competitive games of cards I’ve ever played have been with my immediate family.

Ashes Scout: Warner ends IPL strongly as he faces moment of truth, Marnus tons up as another English quick goes down

I do agree it’s a concern however, but I’m not reading into it too much. Marnus looks in particular looks to be superb touch. Going into this series with so much more confidence in the bats around Smith.

Very tough call on Ben Foakes, he has been great from what I have seen of him. That decision in combination with the Woakes inclusion is interesting to me.
Could they be thinking they will play Woakes at 7 to bolster their bowling, given that Stokes won’t contribute much with the ball. As a trade off they feel having Bairstow bat at 6 is a safer bet than Foakes?

England announce Test squad but Ashes chances cop huge blow with star speedster ruled out

Can’t wait for it. Really want to see them cut down to size. I’m living in England at the moment and I honestly can’t believe how confident their fans are.
They’re definitely a better team now than they were 12 months ago but I think they are totally underestimating how strong we are atm. It’s always competitive in England and this year will be no different. Some of their fans are telling me with a straight face it will be a 4-1 or even 5-0 drubbing!!

Cocky England playing with fire in Ashes build-up, but are they prepared to get burnt?

Forgot about the storm. Munster and Bellamy. Theyre both winners. Grant is the best 9 in the comp. They’ll get busy when they have to.

NRL Power Rankings: Tigers and Titans rise, Cowboys and Dragons plummet - and watch out for the Sharks

This season is shaping up nicely. Quite a few teams in the mix. Souths look the real deal though they need to be careful of peaking too early, they still feel like a bit of a hot and cold side and it’s not the time of year to peak.
Sharks look like they could give it a real shake. Great mix of experience and youth and Nicho is a genuine star.
The roosters are the interesting one for me. All this talk about being out of sorts and clunky but they’re 5 and 3 and sitting in fifth. They look like they have the most improvement in them and they have a coach who is known for timing his run, theyll be in the mix.
Panthers – never write off a champion.
Broncos, a couple key injuries so wouldn’t read too much into this loss. That said, they feel a year or two off – hopefully they can get the young guys going before reyno has to go.
Eels are eels. They’ll make it and give hope but let their fans down.

Can a team win 3 straight games in September with LM as the key focal point?

ANALYSIS: Melbourne never beat themselves and Souths never beat them at all - but where was Latrell for an hour?

Melbourne doing Melbourne things, tougher, braver and wanting it more. And are we getting to a point where we say this is Souths doing Souths things? It’s becoming common that when a team drags them into a war of attrition their big guns go missing. Perennial prelim exits suggest a team that can’t win 3 or 4 straight in September. They say teams are often shaped in the image of their captain but Cam Murray is the only one out there that digs deep.

His short kicking is already very strong. Needs to improve yardage kicks

'Robbo gets into me': How a few sprays helped 'punter' Sam Walker reach 50 NRL games before the age of 21

This is probably the main takeaway from this game, that little combo and for the second game in row, Smith causing havoc from a quick PTB. When you consider the outs the roosters had at that point, in particular Teddy, Manu, Lodge and Crichton. this is a team that will look to get teams on tilt by slamming them through the middle, before pulling them apart with smart work from their 9, 7 and 6 and expert support runners in the outside backs.

ANALYSIS: Suaalii shows why Rugby Australia paid the big bucks - but is Sam Walker the real star?

Origin 'next goal' for Koloamatangi - but he'll have to get through 'gun' mate Olakau'atu to make Blues squad

And the underlying truth of the money they threw at him is not about his talent but about bringing fans back to the game. But that’s where they are mistaken, most of the (former) Waratahs fans are at the scg watching the Swans – the growth of the AFL in Sydney correlates perfectly with the decline of union.

NRL News: Rugby boss hits back at 'cry babies' over Suaalii deal, Eels on hunt for new fullback, Matterson explains fine mess

The blueprint for limiting Latrells impact is clear, keep the ball in play and encourage a set for set grind. Kick for space early in the tackle count and make him return kicks, and do your best to put a bit of hurt into the tackle on him (not easy). Souths will dominate you if you give them field position and a lot it will come from Mitchell. But if you can make him work and do the dirty work at the ugly end of the park, he struggles to do his magical finishing touches we have been accustomed to seeing.
Turbo on the other hand, all you can do is hope he goes off injured because he’s a pure weapon and a complete fullback.

Red-hot Turbo deserves to be in debate for NRL's best fullback but won’t get Tedesco's rep jerseys anytime soon

I genuinely believe if Cody didn’t try milk that obstruction it would have been given. But by putting his arm around Manu he made the defensive decision, and could be interpreted as having stopped Manu going through the line. So dumb from Cody.
