Agree 100% Mick, as a longtime Broncos fan I thought they might have a chance considering their form against St George – until they announced during the week that they weren’t replacing Wallace with a halfback. They’ve done this before, playing people out of position in the halves (Hunt in last Storm game when he had a shocker).

Rudderless is an understatement – we had nothing in attack. I’m a huge Locky fan but he does need to be one further out from the play the ball in attack and these days seems lost without a good 7 inside him. Just hope the extra two years he has decided to play won’t see a great career tarnished by falling performances.

But despite all of that the Storm were incredible – even with Wallace I reckon’ the way they played they still would have beaten us by 20. They are an brilliant side – hard defence, great attack.

Their 2006 and 2008 GF losses obviously burn deep – I think they they will be too good for the Eels next week. They don’t want to have a four GF for 1 win record. Their defence is incredible and maybe only Parra’s devil-may-care touch footy attack can unlock it. But i think the Storm will come out on top in an open attacking game.

And yeah well done to the Storm faithful for coming out and making it such a good crowd.

Storm belt Broncos to book showdown with Eels

Arky, you didn’t have to wait until the NRL game – there was more passion and commitment in the Broncos-Manly U20s game that was on at the same time as the Test. Found myself switching channels more and more in that dismal second half.

I’m also sick of all the tough talk before these AB games from the Wallabies. Just shut the @#$% up and turn up on the night.

And why don’t they learn to adapt during the game – they kept getting smashed at the breakdown yet when ever one of outside backs (and a few forwards) went into the defensive line they had high body positions and always got turned.

And I thought following the Reds was depressing.

Wallabies thumped to finish last in Tri-Nations

Matt, I think the concern of having talent concentrated at just one Australian side is if it means a team like the Reds continues to sit at the bottom of the table because it has historically been the second largest nursery of rugby talent in this country. If the Reds as a team dies over the next 3 or 5 years, will the coming generation of young QLD kids with talent look to rugby as an option or league if the Broncos, Titans, Cowboys are regularly doing well in the NRL and the QLD Maroons continue to have success?

Maybe they’ll still choose rugby if the Wallabies are playing well but I think the proximity of a successful team for a kid to look up to is very important – what I mean is, I’m not sure some gun 11 year old in Kingaroy in 2012 will be pleased the Brumbies are on their way to their second title in a row and think I’m going to play for them one day. I think they’ll look at the Reds getting flogged once again in front of 3,721 people at Suncorp and think, stuff rugby, I’m playing league next year dad. And the less good young players coming through form QLD means less good players for more than just the Reds.

I’m certainly not saying the Reds need any special considerations because it’s their own fault they’ve gotten into this mess, but I think someone at the ARU needs to go in and kick some heads at QRU HQ starting with Peter Lewis.

Elsom signs to Wallabies and Brumbies

Interesting to read Elsom’s comments in The Australian the other day after talks with QLD management:

“We had a difference of opinion over the direction of the club and ultimately had I gone there that would have been divisive,” said Elsom, …..
…. “I wouldn’t have been able to go to the club without trying to make it the way I wanted it and in the end I just knew it wouldn’t be a good fit.”

So what is he saying: That he doesn’t agree with their recruitment plans? Join the queue.
Or that he doesn’t agree with their gameplan? Well we need forwards like him to give us go-forward before we play expansively.

I’m sure he must have quickly realised what we all know; that the QRU hierarchy are all mad, but that comment makes me wonder what problems he saw lurking within the team itself – apart from it being about 8-10 players short of Super 14 finals standard.

Yes Harry, I hope we get Chapman and/or Salvi (depending on what Braid decides to do). Although it feels like we are wandering around with a begging bowl in our hands pathetically asking all the other teams ‘please sir, any scraps you don’t want?’ (No disrespect to either player but it’s not like they’ve put their hands to move to the Reds, and I’m sure if either the Waratahs or Force make them an offer they’ll go there.)

Any news on a decision from the ARU to allow Hugh McMeniman to play for the Reds next year before he heads off to Japan? Would think it was a simple decision they could make to help the Reds out.

Jason that Brumbies team looks pretty impressive, thin I’ll let the kids watch Nickelodeon the night we play them.

Elsom signs to Wallabies and Brumbies

With the news that McMeniman has seemingly told Mooney he is definitely off OS the QRU needs to do anything and everything it can to get Elsom there next year. Watched his performance in a replay of the game last night, incredible effort. Think he made more metres in that one game than the whole Reds pack did in the entire S14 season.

Can’t blame McMeniman, he is probably thinking with his run of injuries he may only have a couple of season left in him – and you can’t say no to an extra $1.2 million over two years.

As for Ioane, well I hope Deans can talk him around on Wednesday but from his comments in the papers today I doubt there is much hope of keeping him too.

Rocky heaps pressure on ARU in European Cup triumph

As a passionate Reds fan who lives and dies by their performances every week even though I left Brisvegas 19 years ago, one of the most frustrating things about last night’s performance by the Reds was seeing a guy like Houston probably have his best game of the year – a bit late mate – where was that passion six weeks ago? The first up tackling was pathetic, on some of the Canes raids they were holding off our guys like kids.

So ss another year of Super 14 ends in abject failure for the Reds I was going to file it under the bulging folder marked ‘Reds’s Failures’ in my sub-conscious and start thinking about which team I’ll support in the finals, but jeez I’d like some answers – so do any QLD supporters have any insights to the local rugby scene up there and can explain why they think the QRU has seemingly let the elite level die?

I have read various Roar threads where contributors have laid the blame squarely on Peter Lewis, Chairman of the QRU or some kind junta of powerful clubs controlling the coaching appointments made by the QRU.

So, a couple of questions for the Roar crowd:
1. Who are these string-pulling clubs and what value is it to them for the status quo of failure to continue?

2. What the hell has been going on inside the QRU for allowing this failure to continue since they sacked McBain, considering he did take us to the semis?

3. Is Mooney the real deal? I’m confused on this one: in his defence, yes they had a very young squad with 16 players making S14 debuts this year; yes he lost one of his most experienced players before the season (Turinui) and another mid-way through (Braid). But against is his continued selection of Cooper at 5/8; his strategy to have the team seemingly play free-flowing rugby before they had even attempted gain any semblance of good field dominance; and the killer – only 6 wins in two years.

4. Why don’t we ever hear John Eales comment on the terrible state of QLD rugby? Surely one of our greatest players from the golden years of QLD rugby would have valuable insights on what could be done?

5. And finally, was Robbie Deans on crack last week when he made this comment in Brisbane:

”I think the Reds have played some great rugby at times this season. I think they’ll be preparing for a playoff in a year,” Deans said when visiting Brisbane yesterday.

Waratahs out as Canes beat Reds

They’d be better off going back to the tackle bags rather than the chalkboard. That was like watching the Reds of two or three years ago. Don’t mind them losing if they have a crack, but there was no direction and little commitment. As my seven-year-old Waratahs supporting son says to me; ‘Dad, the Reds are stinky’.

Reds to go back to the chalkboard after big loss

Very sad news. Condolences to his family, partner, friends and teammates.
