i think you need to analyse what Platini is actually saying rather than pick up on the tabloid headlines which have been turned into another opportunity for some Euro bashing. This is a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph in which Platini makes some valid points. He cares about where football is at and where it is going and I would rather have him at the helm than some patsy pandering to the billionaire owners who only care for ego, profile and money.

Platini is blind to the truth of football's future

Discounting the modern fad of corporations sponsoring and naming teams (check out the welsh league) i think it would be hard to beat Borisov Works of Automobile and Tractor Electric Equipment (ie FC BATE) from Belarus as a traditional name.

Strange club names from around the globe

Last statement says it all and I totally agree with article. I saw Scottish football start the decline in the 80s despite our best players gracing the top teams in England but still leaving plenty quality in the Scottish game. Scotland qualifying for consecutive world cops from 1974 to 1990 also papered over the cracks. Its been a failure of everyone from the SFA, SPL, SFL, governments, councils, rangers, celtic the media and the general population all happy to sit back and watch the collapse instead of taking some radical measures to re-structure the game in line with the modern era and culture of Scotland.

As history repeats, there's no way back for Scotland

this topic goes on and on and on and on. I remember hearing the same thing in the late 80s and nothing has really changed in terms of this debate. In 1992 the Champions League was introduced and then further developed to provide more games. People forget that when the second phase was another round robin of group games, the fans and broadcasters were left with too many meaningless games, hence reverting back to the knock out system for the last 16. The UEFA Cup recently brought in group matches but overall it has hardly set the world on fire – again a lot of meaningless games. I realise that the push for a European League is all about money and the chance for TV viewers to watch the ‘glamour’ clubs but what about the mid table dull games. The EPL has its fair share of dreadful games but at least there is a bit of rivalry and atomsphere. Would Man Utd fans rather have an away game to Portsmouth or an away game to Standard Liege? From a purist point of view (and not from a commercial one) the top leagues (Spain, England, Italy and Germany) cannot be beat in terms of overall quality, atmosphere and attendances. There would be an interest from the ‘big fish in small ponds’ eg Celtic, Rangers, Ajax, PSV, Anderlecht, Lyon. Sporting Lisbon etc but really is that what football fans want? Maybe im in minority but the set up with national leagues, Champions League and Europa League is fine.

A European Super League is fact not fiction

Bundesliga coverage well worth watching

Warney has been great but what about Bumble and that thick Lancashire accent? The man demonstrates his frustrations and admiration for both teams, he has a cricket intelligence as well as having a slice of comedic genius. I would to hear all these guys this summer – Warney, Bumble, Mark Nicholas, Kerry O’Keefe, Bill Lawry, AB, Boof, Flem, Jim Maxwell, Mark Taylor

Warney wows 'em with the microphone

Considering Tassie are not going to get an AFL team within next 5 years, I think the partnership between the Hawks and Tassie has been great for everyone. By committing long term, hawks grow their membership, Tassie government sees the tourism numbers increase and the population can connect with a ‘local’ team and see competivie AFL footy. The next step is to start rotating all the away teams through Tassie over the coming years so everyone on the Apple Isle can see their team during the season. I agree it is restrictive compared to numbers who would go to MCG but there is more to it than attendance numbers and money. It is easy to be cynical but i have still to hear any viable alternative and more importantly I would like to hear what some footy fans in tassie have to say who I am sure value this engagement.

Kennett misses the ball with his Tassie mission

From my perspective I think Gallop is in a hopeless situation due to the corporate governance structure of rugby league in Australia. Who does Gallop report to? News Ltd and ARL? Surely there a conflict of interest and no incentive for anyone involved at the executive level to enforce harsher penalties on players and clubs. Isnt it time for a complete overhaul and provide an independant commission? Gallop is a patsy.

Gallop should stay, but he needs to toughen up
