Olympic credibility takes another pounding

I am dismayed about the recent shortlisting of golf and rugby sevens for possible entry into the Olympics in 2016. Winning a gold medal in the Olympics should be the pinnacle in a sporting career, so I wonder if Tiger Woods and Stirling Mortlock put the Olympics ahead of a Grand Slam or World Cup?

As an avid TV viewer of the Olympics, do I watch the tennis or football competitions at the Olympics?

No.

Will I watch rugby or golf at the Olympics?

No.

I love these sports, but they are already well-developed, professional sports, with great exposure and their own prestigious competitions. I suppose I must be too naïve to think that the Olympic framework is to boost the prospects and profile of sports like squash and karate, both of which failed to make it this time around.

I better make the most of the water polo, archery, badminton, kayaking, handball, volleyball and taekwondo before they get replaced by American Football and baseball.
