Great article, Nick. Robbie Fowler has been underestimated in terms of tactics this season, and this in-depth analysis shows that he has been an astute tactically. Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to assemble this article?

That’s a great idea! She is quite popular so I don’t know whether she would respond but I’ll try to contact her. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks! I think it might be pretty hard to get Ben Halloran or Robbie Kruse but it’s worth a try. That would be a great conversation!

Hi Waz, I was planning on putting Jamie Young in my team before I did the research on statistics, but Andrew Redmayne just edged Young on stats. However, I can see why you feel that Jamie Young deserves a spot in the team, and I spent fifteen minutes deciding between the two!
My A-League team of the season
Interesting picks! Steven Ugarkovic was someone that I felt maybe deserved a spot in the team but I love the way Devlin plays and this was his breakout season, a bit of personal bias there!
Interesting to have O’Donovan in, the reason he didn’t make my team was he had that month gap where he barely got any minutes of football; if only the transfer window came earlier! Centre-backs are hard to judge, and I felt Luke DeVere and Alex Grant both had very good seasons and maybe they could have made my team.
I love Alessandro Diamanti, but Ulises Davila had better all round stats and Diamanti often executed passes that looked wonderful, but they often made it hard for players to control, and that bugged me a bit.
My A-League team of the season
Optus has been doing a ‘free seat’ match pretty much every day the Champions League was on, especially in knock out phases. When there was two round of sixteen games on Optus, usually one of them would be free.
Maximising the A-League’s free-to-air TV coverage
Wuthrich is one that I feel I should have mentioned in the article, but I didn’t feel he deserved a spot in the team. His tackle success rate was 38.1 % and he only won eight tackles all season. Of cause, he was playing in a wider role to Curtis Good throughout the season, but Nikolai Topor-Stanley also was moved into a wide centre-back role later in the season.
My A-League team of the season
I have put Ninkovic’s name on the image but Diego Castro will be playing alongside Ulises Davila in attacking midfield. Sorry for the confusion!
My A-League team of the season
I have three players from Sydney FC (the top team on the ladder) and two from Melbourne City (2nd placed on the ladder). My tactics are suited to the players I’m playing with and Both Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix play this brand of football. If you want to get into a more detailed conversation about the tactics feel free to message me on twitter and let me know how you’d improve this team, as everyone’s team of the season is different.

It’s out there, but the Belarusian Premier League is still on.

It's official: A-League becomes final major sporting code to postpone season
I think you’re taking my label as centre-backs a bit to seriously. You can refer to them however you want, but the main point is that they play a back three which becomes a back two when one of the three defenders overlap or attack. A label isn’t what important, it’s what the players do in those roles that are important.

They are centre-backs that usually play in a back three formation.

Hi jbinne, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I wasn’t around when the likes of Beckenbaur and Ocwirk were around, but by forward thinking I more meant innovative.
The art of the overlapping centre-back
Thanks, chopper. There’s no clear counter to overloads down the wings; if you put more players on the wings there’s more space for the likes of Scott MacDonald and Jay O’Shea to explore in the middle, but maybe some teams have started to become more aware of it now…

Are you implying that my name isn’t Jack?
A finals series is just what the A-League needs right now
If/when a second division is introduced, I think that would be a perfect time to get rid of the finals series. Would you think that having playoffs for promotion from the second division would be a good idea?
A finals series is just what the A-League needs right now
Would a two-legged finals series help increase consistency?
A finals series is just what the A-League needs right now
As said above, I was simply trying to avoid confusion between the two. I believe that the winners of the table should be valued higher than the grand final winner, but unfortunately, that is not the case. As you say yourself, there is nothing minor about it.

Thanks, Doran! He has shown his quality throughout this season.
