For internationals I support Wales first, All Blacks second and then anyone who is playing the Wallabies. For Super Rugby I support the Rebels, then Chiefs and vaguely cheer when the Sunwolves try hard.

Not getting a game for England, except when he was in every game this six nations. DUH!

Nowells hand is in front and then the blues player knocks it out forwards. Clear call for the TMO.

True true, but he can’t deny having those 2 extra points or occasional penalty makes a lead much more comfortable. If the ABs ever lose a close game it will be cause of BB’s (goal) kicking.

Can’t agree, he turned his shoulder in and moved slightly left. Even if TJ milked it a bit he could have kept straight and avoided him. Again, not a yellow but a penalty.

It’s the one hope for the Lions.

Only partly the ref’s fault. Mainly the TMO forcing his opinion, ref should have stuck with his first decision.

Not Perenara’s fault, more the TMO for forcing his opinion on the ref.

Was deserving of a penalty but not a yellow.

Funny how there aren’t any Aussies complaining about the pitch anymore. Before the match even started there was an furious level of whining about how terrible it was going to be to bat on it.
The reality is that every country curates pitches that suit their team. The challenge is to play at a level where that doesn’t matter, as Smith and Maxwell have shown this test.
Stop the complaining and enjoy competitive cricket!

As a Rebels fan I can acknowledge that they’re probably the team that should be cut, however I think it would be a disaster if there weren’t at least a few games played a year in Melbourne. The mid-year test doesn’t always happen and when it does it’s exorbitantly priced. The Rebels have at least brought affordable exciting rugby to melbourne on a regular basis (even if it’s ‘exciting’ cause we’re playing the Canes and Beauden has a stormer)

Eeny, meeny, miny, Rebels?

Some salty Reds fans clearly don’t like the ref. Maybe he didn’t have the best game but your hyperbole makes you look like Whinging Poms. The Force were more dominant and made less mistakes despite less experience and maturity. Another poor performance from Moore but guess what, won’t change Cheika’s mind.
Really exciting to see the Force playing fluid rugby against what was meant to be the best Aussie team this year.

I think you may be ignoring the fact the rugby is reffed differently at different levels of the game. Yes the laws are often (but not always) the same but their interpretation and implementation is often different. Super rugby games are refereed in a different manner to the way international games are refereed. Give this you can’t take precedents from the super rugby season and say that it has to be the same at international level. World Rugby directives to referees will be different to SANZAAR directives.

Nine talking points from the Wallabies vs England second Test

I had a look back over the footage of the last ten minutes of the 1st half. Here’s the important points related to the English infringements:
– 30:45 – Aus enter Eng 22
– 32:22 – Aus advantage for hands in the ruck
– 32:50 – Aus penalty for not rolling away
– 32:51 – Joubert warning about rucks and possible yellow
– 34:06 – Aus Try
– (38:53 – Fardy should be penalised for playing the ball on the ground, crawls to grab the ball, no attempt to get on his feet – ignore this, it’s just me being annoyed at Fardy)
– 42:00 – Aus advantage for hands in the ruck
– 7-8 phases of play and 1 min
– 43:00 – advantage over
– 43:18 – knock on

Given that’s the case and just reading it at face value I think you’re right it should have been a penalty and card for the offence at 42:00. There weren’t multiple card warnings but one was enough. It seemed to get lost in the end of the half and cause of that we didn’t get any explanation from Joubert or chat between him and the captains. Maybe what he saw wasn’t worthy of a card, or something like that. It’s hard to know but at face value: penalty and yellow.

Apart from that decision I thought Joubert had a good game and kept play flowing and continuous. As someone else said above when did you last see a NH vs SH game with that much long and continuous play. Great match!

I’ve had a look back over the footage. I don’t think in the specific circumstances what Joubert did was wrong. I think it’s up to his discretion to decide when advantage has been played. Usually teams try something fancy or a drop goal, instead Aus just kept going at the line. Given the minute and 7-8 phases play they had I think that advantage was over.

However, given the wider circumstances of the previous warning at 32:51 I do now think Joubert should have called it back and maybe even given a card. It’s hard to know what really went on with that penalty cause it moved on so quickly and then half time was called. Maybe what joubert saw wasn’t worth a yellow or something like that.

Not trying to push that line soapit, just annoyed that lots of people have said Joubert had a terrible game whereas I think it was a pretty good/standard performance of what you’d expect of an international referee.

Nine talking points from the Wallabies vs England second Test

In regards to Joubert I thought he had quite a good game. Moore’s shoulder charge wasn’t about the severity, it was about him being the first in to start the fight. Reffs always crack down on this and I thought that was the right call. It’s not about how many penalties stack against each other, that’s not how it works. No need for Moore to charge in, totally throwing away 3 points.
I don’t really know what you mean about there being a card needed for Aus on England’s try line. They consistently had clean ball and it was their own attacking incompetency that meant they didn’t take advantage of the opportunities they had. Joubert gave them ages to get some points and they wasted it so advantage over. There hadn’t been a pattern of penalties, maybe 1 or 2 in the previous 10 minutes so no need for a yellow.

Nine talking points from the Wallabies vs England second Test

Don’t know if you actually watched the game last night. Joubert was not horrendous. I thought he managed the game well and kept the game flowing. The Wallabies had 20-30 mins of free play with England occasionally offending. They weren’t cynical and it was Aus that spurned their own chances with unforced errors. I don’t know what ‘calls’ you are referring to that Joubert didn’t make. Maybe be specific. The only slightly odd, but in the end right, call was Owens calling back the obstruction.

I haven’t seen an instance of that being yellow carded this season. Notwithstanding that international reffing is totally separate from Super Rugby reffing and they shouldn’t really be compared, Pocock did a similar (but more malicious) thing and was not carded at the time but got suspended later. So call for a suspension maybe but no precedent for a yellow especially as it was a first offence, Phipps wasn’t injured and did not seem malicious.

Nine talking points from the Wallabies vs England second Test

The rule book doesn’t say anything about you having to score points for advantage to be called over. It says you can either have a territorial or tactical advantage. In this case they gained a tactical advantage (defined as the freedom for the non-offending team to play the ball as they wish). From my memory Joubert played that advantage for a very long time. Aus had load of phases in which they could have tried a drop goal or some other exciting play for it to be called back. But they didn’t and had about 2 mins of attacking england on the 5m line. Nothing wrong with the reffing, just bad tactics by Aus.

Can’t help but reiterate everyone else’s comments. Get your facts right; a capacity crowd is nothing to sneer at; and grass roots rugby is on the rise every year. The largest stadium in Canberra holds only 25,000 people. Are there even that many rugby fans in the ACT to fill it? Doing the maths 29,000 at AAMI park is more than the largest you’d can even fit in GIO stadium and in Melbourne there is the capacity to move to Etihad which has a capacity of 53,000. Seems like Melbourne is a much safer bet for the ARU and for better rugby (hoping that the pitch gets better next year…)

The ARU is flogging a dead horse by taking Tests to Melbourne

The whole channel 10 commentary team is shocking. They need a former welsh or irish player to put some objectivity back into their commentary.

Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for the second Test?

I love the fruit metaphors.

Hooper just doesn’t really know what position he is. He’s got great speed and ball running skills and constantly gets over the gain line. He’s got the skills of a number 7 but he doesn’t use them and instead waits out on the wing. He needs to decide if he’s a back or a forward and stick to it. The Wallabies suffered too much at the breakdown for him to be chilling on the wing.
