Ngidi’s played 4 Test matches, mate. He’s a talented bowler, but his spot isn’t set in stone at all. The only reason he’s even played at all is because Abbott and Olivier, who’d otherwise be first-choice picks, left for greener pastures.
Theunis is handy at a first-class level, but you can’t keep trying him out at Test level, especially at no.3 when he’s clearly not performing. Send him back to domestic cricket and bring him back when he’s ready. The fact he’s considered the best no.3 RSA have speaks volumes about their lack of depth.
I don’t endorse the argument “well we can’t say what would have happened”, it’s a bit silly for mine. Matthew Hayden averaged 55 in FC cricket before his recall in 1999 – you’re not going to discredit that selection because “you don’t know what’s going to happen”. The writing’s on the wall. He’s got a good FC average, as does Roussouw. He’ll be fine.

Why quotas help, not hinder, South African cricket

The reason I didn’t address that is because I was okay with that. I understand the reasons for doing it perfectly fine. And on a surface level? I’m cool with more investment in black communities to upskill the less privileged demographics in cricket. Doesn’t mean you should potentially jeopardise representative teams by selecting less deserved players.

I have full appreciation for those communities who were affected by Apartheid, but with all due respect: two wrongs don’t make a right.

Theunis de Bruyn? The same guy that averages 19 after 8 Tests with only 1 score over 50? Klaassen is decent, but he’s a wicketkeeper first and foremost, which undermines the role of De Kock, who seems to bat better with the extra responsibility of the gloves. Zubayr Hamza looks like a prospect worth investing in.

But my point is that Rilee Roussouw was better than all of them, and he seemed to slip through the cracks. Man played 50 internationals, averaged 40+ in FC cricket and still couldn’t get a crack because of the quota system.

Keaton Jennings was the South African U19 captain and jumped ship after not even getting a chance at FC level in South Africa. He would have been handy as well and would have allowed Markram, their most natural strokeplayer, to go to 3 or 4.

Rabada is obviously a given, but Ngidi isn’t.

“South Africa are still waiting for that young middle order batsman to reveal himself”

That young middle order batsman might well have been Rilee Roussouw, Heino Kuhn, Dane Vilas or earlier on, Grant Elliott, if quotas hadn’t made them pursue contracts elsewhere.

You’re kinda forgetting that fact that Bavuma is seen by CSA as the poster boy for black cricketers. There have been plenty of fast bowlers of colour from Ntini to Rabada and Ngam to Ngidi but Bavuma is a pioneer – the first full-caste black batsman to not only play for the Test team but also to score a hundred. To remove him from the team is to a remove a pillar of culture from the team. There are intrinsic race-based selections in South Africa, which undermine the idea of meritocracy, which is a real pity.

Spare a thought for their fans because..? The fans did nothing. Spare a thought for the players first and foremost. It was their premiership. Not the premiership of the empty stadium they play in front of every week.

It’s also not “unfair” for rival fans to highlight the caveats in the premiership final as well. The refereeing decisions against Canberra were really poor and it’s perfectly valid to bring them up because without them the complexion of the game would have been entirely different. To complain otherwise comes off as insecure.

This article drips of a Sydney fan trying desperately recover some sympathy. You aren’t the underdog. You have the success. You have the money. Neutrals won’t support you. That’s life. You should support your club because you love the club, not because it makes you feel good when others like it. If it bothers you, go support Canberra.

Spare a thought for Roosters fans

You talk a lot about the metrics, but you really don’t need metrics to judge wicketkeeping. If he drops too many easy catches and misses too many stumping chances, he’s a poor keeper. If he doesn’t, he’s tidy. If he takes screamers and gets to tough stumping chances, he’s a good keeper. You’ll find that it’s not as subjective as you make it seem.

I watched that video. What’s the big deal? It’s basic wicketkeeping. Watching the ball come into your hands? Open stance to give you a trigger movement towards the ball? If you aren’t applying that by U15s you shouldn’t be keeping at all. Even Kamran Akmal did those two things. Didn’t make him a good keeper. All 4 dismissals shown in the video were regulation chances that should really be taken easily. Only the stumping had some level of difficulty about it.

Watch them. You can see the difference.

What a weak top 6

What will Australia A be playing for in Perth?

Both. Jurbo as a ball-playing 13 and Tauma as an impact prop (that’s essentially the role he plays at the Cowboys anyway)

Who would you rather? Jake Trbojevic or Jason Taumalolo

Brett, I’m struggling to latch onto your premise here that Wade is Australia’s next best keeper, let alone establish it as the clear option that you do. Do you remember why Wade was dropped in the first place? I’ll let you think about it

In Test matches, batting is subordinated considerably as a role to actual keeping. Wade is an excellent batsman, I agree, but at the end of the day, his keeping is really substandard. It’s not a coincidence that Lyon has far better SR with Paine at the other end than he did with Wade.

I’d say Carey is the frontrunner to replace Paine based on the full package he offers, but he needs to be a bit tidier too. No real standouts after him.

Australia needs to plan for its wicketkeeping future

Sorry mate, but Wade was awful with the gloves his entire Test career. Don’t mind him as a limited overs keeper as there’s more of an emphasis on batting, but in Tests you need to pick your best gloveman and Wade wouldn’t even make my top 5

Phil Hughes looked better behind the stumps in one over than Wade did in over 3 years

Mate I’ve got plenty of players before Stoinis in my pecking order

Head’s at the top. He’s the incumbent, he’s averaging 45 in Tests and off the back of a Shield hundred. Maddinson’s probably next based on form. Pucovski if they want to take a punt on potential. Stoinis has been good in 3 matches so far, and has only played 13 first class matches over the past 3 years. I’d be waiting another couple of months to see if his Shield form continues before picking him I think

Burns is a shoe-in though, yeah

Smith and Warner crush Sri Lanka

Maybe the first is correct, but Stoinis is a very hot-and-cold death bowler, at the best of times, he misses his yorkers really often and his work during the WC at the death was really underwhelming I thought

Smith and Warner crush Sri Lanka

Oh yeah, and that’s just the start; Shakib Al Hasan, Rassie vd Dussen, Andre Russell, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Mohammad Hafeez, Liton Das, need I go on? It’s not the IPL, but it’s still a very legitimate T20 league

What we learnt from Australia's drubbing of Sri Lanka

Green’s probably not at the top of my list, not least ahead of Zampa and Agar but his experience in T20 comps around the world should not be discounted; if he has another good BBL he’s certainly worth a shot; he’s a specialist powerplay bowler too, which is quite unique for an Australian spinner

What we learnt from Australia's drubbing of Sri Lanka

Don I’m not sure if you realise but Chris Green’s bowling led Guyana to a 2nd successive CPL grand final just three months ago

He’s mediocre in first-class and List A cricket, but he has an exceptional T20 record, he’s a powerplay specialist and Australia does not have a single spinner who shares that attribute. He averages a wicket a match and bowls at a measly 6.72 runs per over, which is a phenomenal stat for a powerplay spinner.

Your comparisons to Holland, Andrews, Nair and both Shorts are so hilariously off-kilter I don’t know where to start. Holland averages 38 in T20s (Haha!) Andrews has only played 2 T20 matches in his entire career, both Shorts are batting all-rounders with far inferior bowling records and Nair’s completely changed his suspect action which has given him so much success, so who knows whether he’s any good. Swepson is literally the only somewhat comparable player – but why play him when you already have Zampa? No sense.

You’ve outdone yourself Don, you really have.

What we learnt from Australia's drubbing of Sri Lanka

Am I right in saying it was Botham’s ’81 Headingley Test?

My read on it was that it was a bit of a piss-take, they kinda expected to throw away $10 just for kicks and giggles, but obviously the impossible happened and they profited from it – whoops

Shakib Al Hasan ban creates opportunity for Australia

I was referring to the odds, didn’t make that clear ahaha

Shakib Al Hasan ban creates opportunity for Australia

One such case you speak of, Chris, is the Lillee-Marsh bet in one of the Ashes tests. They bet some exorbitant amount of money on Australia losing an unlosable Test match but got off scot-free because they didn’t appear to be putting in any less effort than usual

Shakib Al Hasan ban creates opportunity for Australia

Kanos actually wasn’t too bad in this series I thought

He doesn’t look particularly threatening in a wicket-taking sense, but he’s been super-economical himself. If he has another great BBL, I’d be more than happy for Australia to take him on as a squad player for the T20 WC

Smith and Warner crush Sri Lanka

If you took a drink everytime Warne mentioned Riley Meredith last night you’d have passed out on the frontyard just as Smith made his 50

Smith and Warner crush Sri Lanka

Heavens to betsy

Alex Carey should be Australia's Test opener

That’s a reasonable point, but what’s the point of including players to play against a touring international side if you have no intention of letting them go further into their own setup? Makes no sense to me. The past 12 months they’ve picked players solely there to be a proper 2nd side, no reason why that shouldn’t continue

Formidable Australia A squad named ahead of Test summer

Meredith is far from the top 8 bowlers in Australia

Assuming our best 4 are Starc-Cummins-Hazlewood-Lyon, and not counting the other 3 selected:
Pattinson
Siddle
Bird
Tremain
Sayers

Are all far better and more proven players than Meredith is. If we were talking T20s? Different story. But longform cricket I put him in the same bracket as Stanlake.

Yeah, he’s quick. Cool. So?
