Another report on the Roar this morning says that he is fully fit now. It should also be pretty clear by now that no selection is obvious with Eddie.

Wallabies set to lose Kerevi for World Cup opener, Petaia backs young gun for debut

Brett I’m a Wallabies supporter, let me have my hope/delusion for at least a few more days

'It's everything': The craziness and stupidity that must be addressed if Eddie is to be proven right

Brett if you look at the wallabies spring tour side last year they were hardly worldbeaters, but they were probably better than Wales, Fiji and Argentina, with England on a rapid decline – that’s all we need to be to make the semis. I still think we are the best team in our pool, but we definitely have a slip up in us with such a young squad, and Argentina (who i would also say should expect to make the semis) would be favourites in a quarter final, which is why I’m less hopeful than I was.

'It's everything': The craziness and stupidity that must be addressed if Eddie is to be proven right

This question comes across a bit snarky but I genuinely don’t know the answer: a lot of profiles about Eddie and his staff talk about how he pushes his assistants to improve constantly, but have any of his assistants (long or short term) had successful head coaching careers?

From painting to the World Cup: Why NRL coach didn't run from Eddie's call - and how he's adding to the Wallabies

Odds are that under Rennie we would have made the semis and then bowed out in a respectable defeat. If Eddie can get the same result or better while getting valuable experience into the core of the team we will have for the lions series and 2027 World Cup then I’m happy to eat some of my words and call the coaching change a success. Based on the year so far, however, I doubt that will happen – but I’ll be watching and hoping.

A top 10 this season would have made an even less interesting final round – instead of needing to win, the raiders and cowboys would just need to not get flogged to stay ahead of parra, on for/against and the Rabbitohs would get their finals spot no matter what else happened.

Lack of care factor over NRL minor premiership is embarrassing but almost impossible to solve perennial problem

Something you could do to limit the injury faking impact is say that you can have as big a bench as you like, but anyone who gets replaced cannot play the next game for that team. That would probably cause player welfare issues though, and in big games like a World Cup final teams wouldn’t care about the penalty.

'Seriously': Ex-Scotland coach calls on World Rugby to 'act' on Springboks after 'abusing bench' against All Blacks

They were a mess when he took them over and improved very quickly to be fair – they didn’t make it out of the pool in 2015, then under Eddie went undefeated through 2016 and won back to back 6 nations. Crucially, though, he kept the same core squad that had failed at the World Cup – he just got a lot more out of them.

Eddie Jones has broken every World Cup convention - it's a high-risk strategy no-one knows will work

Rugby Australia didn’t throw out the rule book by appointing Jones, what they did was copy Englands homework – and are now getting exactly the same result. And while no one can be 100% sure, with every game the Wallabies play this year we can be increasingly confident that Eddie’s and RA’s “brave and bold” strategy won’t work this year. We may well see the dividends for 2027, and maybe even 2025, but pretending it is even designed to give us our best shot this year is a fantasy.

So which coaches do you think confused Michael Hoopers experience with leadership? Was it McKenzie who first made him Wallabies captain within a couple of years of his debut? Cheika, who made him the Waratahs on-field captain en-route to a super rugby title? Or Rennie, whose record looks better and better with every game Eddie coaches?

Eddie to resist last-minute Wallabies RWC changes despite injury clouds, Samu opens up on axing

The younger group are rapidly becoming even bigger losers, at 0-5 so far. I’m not opposed to bringing in new young players, but doing it all at once in a World Cup doesn’t magically teach anyone to win games. Next year when everyone else is rebuilding as well would have been a better time to make mass changes.

He won a super rugby title and a rugby championship, and went to a World Cup final – he’s one of very few available players to have actually won anything as a professional

He was going to be fit to play after the first couple of pool matches

Because Eddie (and McLennan) have given up on this World Cup and are getting a head start on the rebuild for 2027. That’s the only way that the selections make sense – and even then leaving out some of the older guys who can at least set the standards at training seems weird. I just wish they’d come out and say it, and tell the fans not to bother getting up at 2am because we aren’t really trying anyway (the coaches that is – I have no doubt every player will try his heart out, but so would anyone else we could pick).

Spot on – with all the talk around a lack of leadership in the squad it wouldn’t shock me to see an article from Christy about Michael Hooper being past it and why it’s actually a good thing he isn’t in France

There’s a number 7 that got left out who you’d think would be handy if you need some more leadership in the squad…

Unless the game plan for France was to miss kicks and give away a lot of penalties I don’t think Fiji and Georgia need to be too worried

'We didn't want to show too much': Is Eddie bluffing in a high stakes game of rugby poker?

I love taking shots at Eddie as much as anyone, and have been very critical of some of his decisions, but it’s absolutely unrealistic to expect the Wallabies head coach to do anything of substance with the Wallaroos. The announcement that he would oversee both was clearly another example of the lip service that RA (led by McLennan) have been consistently giving the women’s game without backing it up in any way with actual support.

'It has been impossible': When it comes to his 'secondary' job Eddie Everywhere has been more like the invisible man

Of course there isn’t enough money left for the women’s program after RA have already decided to spend it elsewhere. If there was enough money to bring eddie in and keep paying Dave Rennie to do nothing, there was enough for a full time women’s coach. If there is enough money to pay a league winger over a million per year to jump across, there’s enough for a full time women’s coach. Saying RA doesn’t have enough is like a man who pays 3 sets of private school fees, just bought a new car and takes the family on skiing and summer holidays every year complaining that there’s no money left over. They just need to decide whether or not women’s rugby is a priority, and if not (as seems to be the case) don’t bother pretending it is.

RA's 'devastating, no substance' response to Wallaroos shows exactly why rugby is being left behind

Even if a fully pro sr comp is out of reach (which I agree it probably is right now) we could at least have a fully pro wallaroos, with adequate coaching support to allow them to improve their skills and be a real threat at the home World Cup in 2029, which should be our target – particularly with the Matilda’s example to follow. You could pay a top squad of 30 players, a couple of coaches and a physio 100K each per year for the cost of 3 Joseph Sua’ali’i’s.

RA's 'devastating, no substance' response to Wallaroos shows exactly why rugby is being left behind

RA seem to magically find plenty of money when they want to sign a new league winger or pay out a coach so they can get a new, more expensive one – and they can even fly the wallabies girlfriends around the country and put them up in fancy hotels. Why is it only the women’s game that they can’t find money for?

RA's 'devastating, no substance' response to Wallaroos shows exactly why rugby is being left behind

Yeah, I was thinking we could also pay some more coaches to do nothing, sign a few more league wingers, pay for the wallabies girlfriends to come visit them and try to turn the Shute shield into a professional third tier while we are at it.

With the wallabies missing the top performing Sydney and Brisbane players would likely get called in to super rugby sides anyway

RA's target of a third tier in 2024 raises a whole heap of questions in desperate need of answers

I suspect the real sticking point for Phil Waugh is that he doesn’t want a third tier that devalues top grade clubs in Sydney (particularly) and Brisbane. To an extent I see the point – a day out at Manly oval watching the rugby is fantastic, and most of the clubs predate the rebels, force and brumbies. However, given the final of the Shute shield is this weekend I don’t see why we can’t pick a July internationals and rugby championship squad after super rugby and start a super rugby AU comp in September to keep players fit and give us a chance to find some bolters for the Spring tour?

RA's target of a third tier in 2024 raises a whole heap of questions in desperate need of answers

That’s fair, but to keep up the wallaroos at least need to be full time as well, and the super teams need to be well paid enough to hold of at least some NRLW raids.
