Ikonomidis winner sends Victory into A-League grand final

Seriously? Wow! Brendan was right.

Don’t understand the finger to the camera. What’s he thinking? Flipping the bird to the viewers at home?

They won’t. The CCM fair weather supporters who have only come out for the finals wouldn’t pay that.

He was also sprinting at full speed and then sliding in for a tackle which is why his arms were in that position. The ball hit his body first and then deflected onto his arm. At that moment does anyone actually think he had in his mind: I’m going to raise my arms above my head to stop this cross? Thankfully Rufer missed/Izzo saved again.

Agreed on the handball decision in the Mariners v Sydney game. Should have been a penalty and Fabio’s “impeding” for the ball over the line goal also not correct. I don’t think Faghani is a good referee. He seems to care more about the players and coaches respecting him (respect for refs is important) than about the rules of the game.

Good points and good summary Waz. I’m not sold on the two-legged Grand Final idea though. Yes, it would be good for the APL’s finances and they do need help, but while I think it works for the “elimination” semi-finals, the Grand Final as the name suggests should be a one-off “Grand Final(e)”. If there were two legs, there would need to be an S in there somewhere and “Grand Finals” doesn’t really work.

Columbus Crew! Great story. They play the Concacaf Champions Cup final on the 1st of June (2nd of June our time, I believe).

Great article Ian. Thanks for writing!

The value of foreign-developed players: What Football Australia can learn from Morocco for Socceroos success

I seem to recall a comment from you a few days ago praising finals football? You even said the Grand Final should be home and away!

Sydney FC do not deserve to be in A-League Grand Final, yet still have a chance - and that should worry Mariners

Exactly! Agree 100%. Why no Galic, Bolden? I know Gielnik is injured.
At least Harding, Heyman, Wilkinson, Vine, and Hawksby were selected.

Kisnorbo goes from French farce to All Stars comeback

Lots of diversity with the Phoenix from NZ with Māori and Pakeha, a Bulgarian, a Pole, and Central Coast with a Brazilian, a Ni-Vanuatu, Coasties, a Kiwi, a South Sudanese, a Sudanese, a Queenslander, and so on.

Hmmm. Mixed feelings on this.

Was disappointed with how he played after he came on against Wellington.

So you would go to a Grand Final between Sydney FC and the Scabs (as you call them)? That’s hard to believe Waz!

It’s a direct spot in the Asian Champions League Elite for winning the final.

Mariners strike gold in the Middle East with history-making AFC Cup triumph

I’m really surprised you haven’t mentioned “happy clappers” Waz! I felt sure this article would bring that out of you. And sorry for not mentioning Brisbane! That was not deliberate. I was at Suncorp for the game against Adelaide last Friday.

Not too scared. The article was only about positives.

You’d have to think Iredale and Yengi are the front runners.

Great article Midfielder! There are so many things that the MLS are doing right and here in Aus we can definitely learn from them. There are also more similarities with Aus and the US than similarities with Aus and Europe, the main ones being huge geographical area and football not being the number one sport. Thanks for writing the article.

A-League Ready: Australian football needs a more formal and streamlined player development program like MLS Next

Adam Taggart had an outstanding season. On the one hand, it’s a shame he didn’t do much on his return to the Socceroos, but on the other hand it gives someone else a chance to shine (Yengi, Iredale, Stamatelopoulos perhaps?).

Thanks Chris. Like the Yazz song from the 80s, I truly believe the only way is up from here.

I’ve been very impressed with Hayden Matthews, such composure for such a young player. He looks to be solid as a rock in defence and a future Socceroo.
