They are also ranked 4 and 5. Much higher rankings than the other teams apart from Spain and France (no England). It’s good that Matildas are not in the same group as Spain as I feel they’d wallop us.

Well, there’s also the logistics of flying into Canberra with the lack of international flights right?

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

Would probably be the cheapest option but as the National teams play hardly any matches there, probably would not be a popular choice.

I know they are in the current squad but I really hope Van Edmond, Luik, Yallop, and Polkinghorne don’t play for the Matildas ever again. This group is going to be very tough for the Matildas. Germany and the USA will be tough for a Kerr-less team. I’m expecting Zambia to easily beat Morocco. Zambia won’t be pushovers either, they have Racheal Kundananji, who recently made the largest transfer in women’s football.

True. Not many bums on seats……….

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

At the risk of sounding like NoMates with his crowd obsession, here’s a glass half full response from a Happy Clapper: Wellington: top of the table, average 8.6K and trending up, CCM: playing great football, may win the AFC Cup, 7.6K and trending up, Macarthur: currently 3rd, good run in the AFC Cup, cracked the 5K crowd, 3.7K and trending up, Victory: still getting over Bucket Boy, 12.6K, could do better, Sydney: 13.5K, pass but could do better, WSW: 10.8K, RBB/Venues NSW/Police crowding issues/boycott needs to be sorted, City: 9.3K, propped up by Victory derby, Roar: 6.4K, as sole Brisbane/QLD team, should be better, Adelaide: despite massive fall down ladder, 9.8K Glory: 5.8K, will increase now they have ownership stability, Newcastle: 5.5K ownership situation looks dire but do Novocastrians really want an A-League team?, WU: 3.4K, ALW got 2K last weekend, should improve once they start playing games at Tarneit.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

So the 12,000 Roar fans that didn’t go to the Roar’s home game last week (Target 15,000 crowd only 3000 turned up), didn’t go because of the Grand Final decision, wins over goal difference, current administrators, and Sydney/Melbourne preferential treatment? Nope. It was because it was hot, it was at Ballymore, Roar aren’t in the top 6, fans don’t like the Bakries as owners, public transport, and any number of other excuses/reasons. Not because of the APL.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

100,000 “provisional” members is very impressive. What’s involved with being a “provisional” member? How is it different from being a “member”? I’m assuming it just means people have provided their details and put in $20 something?

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

The club owners are holding out for 100% of what they have put in and so are killing the deal. I hope Newcastle survives but I can’t blame the club owners for trying to get their money back. It’s just a crappy situation.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

The likely loss of the Jets and the state of the competition is not because of the Grand Final decision, wins over goal difference, the current administrators, or preferential treatment for Sydney/Melbourne clubs. That’s complete balderdash. Unfortunately, it all comes down to a lack of interest, eyeballs, and bums on seats. If these were all better, there would be more revenue from crowds, a better tv deal, bigger sponsors, more media coverage and so on. Brisbane Roar had a crowd of 3,000 people at their home game last weekend FFS!
(Disclaimer: I’m not an AFL/NRL troll. I love football and the A-League and while I was not born in Queensland, I’m a Queenslander these days. I have not been to any A-League matches this season because I reside overseas).

Good positive post FIL. What’s the latest with the Newcastle owners?

A-League report card: Frustrated fans, crap scheduling, Socceroo mystery men and wasted money, but the brand is strong

I agree that with QLD’s size, population, participation rates and so on it’s crazy that there is only one professional team, there probably should be at least 3 pro teams. And yet Roar are averaging 5000- 6000 people per home game. Even Macarthur got a crowd of 4687 to their last game.

A-League report card: Frustrated fans, crap scheduling, Socceroo mystery men and wasted money, but the brand is strong

To be fair, I think Fury folded in 2011 and Gold Coast in 2012 under FA’s watch and I think we are all familiar with why those teams folded and it wasn’t because FA shut them down without legitimate reasons. APL haven’t been in charge long, we’re all aware of the KeepUp and Grand Final fiascos but they are bringing in Auckland and maybe Canberra(?). Nobody in QLD has put their hand up.

I’m not having a go, but I don’t understand your post. Do you mean Gold Coast and NQ Fury folding reduced the number of professional players in QLD? Or something else?

A-League report card: Frustrated fans, crap scheduling, Socceroo mystery men and wasted money, but the brand is strong

Interesting article Stuart. Agree the scheduling could be improved. While it’s great to see more interest and support for women’s football, the 66% attendance increase is skewed by Sydney FC’s large home crowds. Perhaps where possible more double-headers can be scheduled? Great that U-16s can get in for free, definitely the A-League men should also be doing that. It would be lovely to have a few billionaires buy teams and bring back current Socceroos and some international stars, but it also was not long ago that some of the players you mentioned – Garang Kuol, Atkinson, Goodwin, Bos – were playing in the A-League. It’s really unfortunate that fans from the two teams that have misbehaved and then stayed/are staying away have greatly harmed the image of the league and its attendance figures. Western United and Macarthur have also massively dragged down average attendances, although I’ve noticed the latter are starting to regularly get crowds above 4000 (4687 last game v Mariners) which is an improvement. Your final line about being dead before the A-League gets there seems very pessimistic, may I ask how young you are?

A-League report card: Frustrated fans, crap scheduling, Socceroo mystery men and wasted money, but the brand is strong

Surprised Borrello has been selected. If a striker was going to be selected from the A-League I thought Stametelopolous would have been the better choice. Glad Bruno and Taggart are in.

Looks like a very good player who should soon be in the national team if he continues to play so consistently well.

Agreed. Very good player having a great season.

Goals galore, great strikes and penalties: The A-League players who were the difference in Round 20

Yet another cracking weekend of football dished up by the A-Leagues! Great goals, skillful football, comebacks, controversy, top of the table losing, bottom of the table winning, golden boot contenders continuing their race, and the list goes on. You have to think that eventually word will get out about the simple fact of the top quality football on the pitch and the crowds will follow?

Victory bounce back in Original Rivalry, Mariners nab top spot, can Rudan turn it around?

As TSS has mentioned several times in other comments, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes at Adelaide which seems to be affecting multiple players individually and the squad as a whole. It’s quite incredible with the squad and the talent they have that they have dropped from second on the table at one point earlier in the season (I think?), to second-last. And with the way Peña and co played last week even though WU perhaps have the slightly harder fixtures, you’d have to say AU will probably finish with the wooden spoon.

Does the A-League do enough to nurture creative players?
