There’s certainly an argument to say that Roos is overrated. A super coach? Perhaps not, but certainly a very good coach.
But people are also underselling the work he did at Melbourne and how much of a basketcase the club was when he took over.

To clarify, he took over a club that won 2 games the year prior (not 4) with a percentage of 54. That’s atrocious. The year before that Melbourne won 4 games with a percentage of 67. Of the 6 wins, 4 were against expansion teams – 3 against GWS in their debut and second years and 1 against Gold Coast in their second year. The 2 wins against established clubs was by a goal over Essendon in ’12 and by 3 points over the Western Bulldogs in ’13.

Using the Fremantle example as perspective, Connelly took over a team that won 2 games with a percentage of 72 in ’01 and had won 8 games with a percentage of 72 the year prior. Across those two seasons they suffered losses in excess of 9 goals 11 times. Melbourne across the 2 Neeld years suffered losses in excess of 9 goals a staggering 21 times – that’s almost every second game.

So whilst Roos ain’t perfect, the work he (and more importantly, Peter Jackson) did to set the Melbourne Football Club up for the current regime cannot be overstated.
