Played football till 53 when the knee said ‘enough’. Included a stint in State League. Coached too. And refereed. Vague support of Leicester City and Aston Villa, having grown up about halfway between them. Central Coast Mariners member of many seasons.

This is well written and accurate. We CCM fans now await the inevitable sale of players. We are aware Cummings and Triantis are gone. We live in hope the damage to this excellent side is minimal and that the coach sticks around.
Playing in Asia is a draw card. Monty staying would be another. And a few of these players owe…

The rime of the modern Mariners

They voted for Townshend’s idea Central Coast voted against it.

The Mariners' title win was the glimmer of hope A-League fans needed

If the game had been played in Melbourne the difference would have been about 7000 City fans and 7000 Mariners fans would probably have witnessed a 1-4 drubbing by the Mariners instead.
The momentum in the league has been with a Central Coast for over two months. They had become irrepressible and inspirational. But more importantly unbeatable.
Considering all the back stories and their recent history this surely is a feature film in the making.

The Mariners' title win was the glimmer of hope A-League fans needed

I agree… this has the makings of a classic. The recent game between the two at Gosford ended 1-1. But that doesn’t tell the story. Both teams were firing up front on 4 cylinders (the 4 strikers in both sides you refer to). What that did was to raise the level of defending in both sides to a level I had rarely seen in the A-League.

The A-League Grand Final is a fight for the heart and soul of Australian football

Not confirmed.

The A-League Grand Final is a fight for the heart and soul of Australian football

12-2 over the season. It’s a demolition. The Reds would have had a couple of reds (hah !) if the advantage rule did not exist. They really tried the rough stuff on Saturday. Especially targeting Silvera. There was a brilliant justice to him scoring the opening goal. I have no idea how he urged his bruised legs to run him into that position to finish off Cummings’ intelligent gallop and subtle pass. As for Tulio, he deserves to grace a final. CCM going to be the neutrals favourite for sure.

For one glorious night, we all remembered why we love the A-League

Totally agree with you.

City thrash 10-man Sydney, make fourth straight Grand Final

I can see Bos playing as a central defensive midfielder in the future and for the national side. Possibly alongside Stensness. We have Farrell who can play left back anyway.

The rise of Jordan Bos is proof the A-League is working

They do a lot of community work. Probably among the best. A lot aimed at kids. What they don’t do is publicize properly. There are no posters, no merchandise in shops. No car stickers available. Nothing out there.
A lot of people got traumatized by the horrendous years after the 2013 win and just won’t go back.

It's no surprise the best A-League games are those with real meaning

About a month ago you could quite justifiably have predicted a Melbourne City v Adelaide United final. Now you wouldn’t bet against a Sydney FC v Central Coast Mariners final… reprising the very first one. MC look to have peaked early… and are stuttering…. evidenced by McLaren getting one touch in the ball in the 80th minute v Sydney. Sydney look to be improving every week and if they can put their three strikers on have every chance. Adelaide to their misfortune have had to deal with a Mariners side that has become rampant over the last few weeks, but more dismally for The Reds has got the wood on them totally… neither Goodwin or Irankunda have had any effect in these games. They have a season deficit of 2-10 in 3 games. Those two goals being a very late consolation and a lucky penalty. Whatever happens it’s going to be dramatic.

It's no surprise the best A-League games are those with real meaning

Maclaren’s only touch was in the 80th minute !

It's no surprise the best A-League games are those with real meaning

Half of Sydney (the other half support the other lot) is about 2.5 million people.
Adelaide is 1.3 million.
The Central Coast is under 0.4 million.
Yet there will probably be about 15,000 at Gosford on Saturday evening like at the other games last weekend. Shows there is the support there for the club when they are going well.

It's no surprise the best A-League games are those with real meaning

All pretty irrelevant. The top two teams will, thank goodness, contest the final. It will be a cracker. The game between CCM and MC in Gosford a few weeks back was probably the game of the season. Although it ended 1-1 both teams went all out on attack with the very capable weapons both sides have. It caused the defences and keepers to really lift. A game for the officianados. More of that.

Will the Sydney Derby elimination final actually live up to the hype?

… and Villa thumped Newcastle last weekend. So watch this space.

Why Newcastle's Champions League rise would be the greatest achievement of the year

I’m surprised the Irish joker masquerading as a ‘sideline expert’ doesn’t get frosty responses from everyone he poses questions to. They are always either banal or senseless. Does this man just grab a mic every week or has someone employed him ?

A-League Round 24 talking points: Talay's future up in the air, Victory down and out, City premiers again

You missed Cummings. Currently likely to be runner up for ‘The Boot’.

A-League Round 23 talking points: The Borrello show, full Coopers sight for sore eyes, is Papas in trouble?

I’m with you on this. But what I do not understand is how a second tier will fit in with policy. When the A-League was launched it was made clear that the old days of so called ‘ethnic’ clubs were over in the newly badged A-League. Only Perth Glory survived intact.
Yet among the clubs vying for spots in the proposed B-League are plenty with strong affiliations to one migrant group only. If promotion from that tier becomes a reality then so does having clubs that contravene the original ethos of the A-League.

Apathy and incentives: Without high-level stakes and drama, the A-League will always be lacking

Not granting franchises to a couple of clubs with tiny fan bases… Western and Macarthur… would have helped overall. Ignoring Wollongong, Canberra, Hobart etc when all of these would have brought larger fan bases to the league, was short sighted.

The A-League desperately needs to bridge the gap between its best games and its worst

Nope ! I didn’t do it ! I ended up playing in State League here. Unfit only in that both knees are messed up from 46 years of football !

Mariner Josh Nisbet is short of stature and exposing football development flaws in Australia

As a Mariners supporter I admit I was skeptical about his chances of holding down a spot in our midfield. I happily admit to being wrong.
He has not started two games this season and we lost them both. He and Balard now are a good combination. They are at last getting forward and threatening the opposition goal which neither were before.
But I should have realized. I had trials with Coventry City and we had a match between the trialists in the afternoon. We won 4-1 and I got a hat trick. I got called into the managers’ office only to be told: “Go home and put some weight on, son.”
To say I got disillusioned is an understatement.

Not true. This has happened before. But I can’t remember the teams.
I played in a crucial game against fierce rivals when we were awarded a penalty late on which would have been the equalizer if converted. The opposition complained about the decision. But we contested it too ! The ref yellow carded two of theirs and two of ours.
Our captain took the penalty and aimed it at the corner flag. He got yellow carded. We lost.
We were treated to free meals and drinks at their club. And a friendly rivalry came out of it. We joined clubs for social nights from then on.

'Never see it before': Incredible act of sportsmanship evens out shockingly cynical moment

Not what I heard from the relative of one of the players who recently went there. He said his relative thought only Celtic were any good… and the A-League players were fitter and had better technique.

In-demand Aussie football star Garang Kuol set for loan move

Maclaren joined Cummings last weekend on 6 non-penalty goals. Over the next few seasons we will see Cummings take the Golden Boot off him, and be in front of him for a Socceroo spot. He’s also younger.
Cummings is a more complete player. He has the goal area predatory nature but gets involved in others’ goals too and drops into midfield at the start of attacks.

A-League Round 10 talking points: Victory slumping, Kuol says farewell, Maclaren makes history

Nectar Triantis at 19 playing central defence for the Central Coast looks a great prospect. Very mature play. And tall.

The youthful and unblooded hold the key to 2026 Socceroo fortune

Howe says he needs to go to ‘a good level, a good club and a good coach’. So why is Hearts a good destination for him ? No offence I’m sure they are a good club. But the level is not above A-League. Having other Australians there is not a good reason. Ball players like Arzani just get killed there. I fear for his fitness. Australia needs him fit. The continent would be better. His brother is in Germany.
