Why the Feb – Nov calendar? We’re already struggling with poor surfaces at this time of year and want to move to winter on grounds which most clubs already share with the 2x rugby codes? We can harp on all we want about boutique stadia but I don’t see MV/MVFC/SFC/WSW/Bris/Wellington moving anywhere anytime soon (if ever) so we need to accept that more clubs will share grounds than not. I also understand that moving the calendar will align with the lower tier clubs but that almost feels like putting the cart before the horse? I originally felt, and still do, that the move to summer was great for the code. It aligns with the Northern Hemisphere calendar, we have more “clear airtime” with the winter codes in hibernation, and less shoddy surfaces from ground sharing.

Pro/Rel has been harped on forever now. I do think MLS is what we should be looking at. Take our time and get it right. We saw what happened with NQ. I’d much prefer a successful 2nd tier in 2034 than the whole competition struggling because we rushed it through by 2029

Can football fans handle the truth?

I’m more wary than optimistic Stuart.
Football is/always has been a magnet for self interest and politics. These attitudes held the game back before the Crawford report came along and Lowy (snr) sweeping in to do his bit to clean it up. The NSL day’s were wonderful on the park but horrible off it. I’d agree that the current board was getting stale and the game wasn’t improving/building on what it had. But in the congress changes we haven’t made a bigger pie, we’ve simply added more slices to it. I’m a little worried that we may have a bit of hurt and the place may become Soccer Australia before it comes good, if it improves at all.

The window of change opens, now to find the right people

Hawthorn lost to the best side in the comp in wet conditions and scored 64points.
Melbourne beat the best side in the comp in good conditions and scored 75points (and yes should have been more).
The pressure from Richmond was manic and the Cats hardly chased at all.
Think it’ll be a lot closer than people think – even with the outs of O’Meara and Stratton.

Semi-final forecast: Hawthorn vs Melbourne

Glad you were able to highlight most of the views that abound with the issue of flares with a bit more reason than other pieces so far.

I would agree with you that maybe we need to allow some pyrotechnics in the area if the guys brandishing flares weren’t wearing balaclava’s to hide their faces when they did this. They’re well aware that its illegal and contrary to the beliefs of most football followers. They’re not football fans as you said in your piece, they’re thugs enjoying the anonymity of the crowd to get away with behaviour that even their mothers wouldn’t be proud of. I’m aware that the language I’ve used is inflammatory but selfish idiotic thugs really isn’t far from the truth. Selfish in that they’re only concerned about their enjoyment to the detriment of others, idiotic in that they’re aware of the risks involved and they still go ahead with it, and thugs as they hide behind balaclava’s to “proudly” display their macho behaviour

To say that it’s not the crowds responsibility to police the actions of others is naive at best. If someone was being bashed you aren’t expected to step in and risk your life, but you’re expected to assist in finding the culprits. The same goes for vandalism, theft, racism or whatever we as a society do not accept as appropriate behaviour from others. I don’t want to live in a society where we stand by at let others behave poorly without sanction simply because “its not my job its a job for the police”.

From a guy that doesn’t sit in the active area but goes regularly and loves the game equally – stop it, grow up and realise that there’s many ways of displaying your support for your team without risking your fellow fans health and wellbeing.

Red and Black Bloc's use of flares light up debate once again

Not really scrappy, patchy maybe?
Some great touch and passing followed by pretty awful stuff… Probably to be expected after the break.
