Agree with this model. But make it a semi pro national comp of 8-10 teams. Make this the focus. Give fans 10 home games for engagement. Then 1 or 2 pro teams (Aus A and B) sit on top to participate in a short trans pacific comp (+ winner of national comp). This will prep players well for international duties and ensure longer, higher standard seasons for players not participating in the wallabies.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

Also build an optimal governance model which promotes accountability, transparency, communication and leadership. No ex players should be allowed anywhere near the board unless appropriately qualified.

COMMENT: Australian rugby is a depressing picture - the RA board must be axed and the constitution changed

like Dude wtf… bell, Foketi, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Jed Holloway and gamble. Such an ignorant comment!

Brumbies make it 12 straight against Tahs as Bell hobbles off in worrying sign for Wallabies

Clyne was an ex banker but I am not sure who else? The whole governance model is broken. There is no accountability to the game’s stakeholders. The board is filled with ex players. We now have a CEO who is an ex player. None of them are qualified or properly experienced to hold such positions. I am sure they all have good intentions but none have proven themselves as competent stewards of the game. nepotism remains rife. We seem to move from one disaster to another. And we wonder why we’re in such a mess….

Where is the accountability? Massive overspend, no cost controls. Basic stuff. Amateurs.

its 2022 revenue may have been but its cash balance wasnt. you’re comment is ignoring the damage done by covid and lost revenue.

Rebels set to sue Rugby Australia as civil war erupts, Rugby Victoria President barred from summit

Some perspective required here. A lot of the funding shortfall within the game was due to covid. Add in administrators overspending during times when they should have reigned in costs and you get a potent cocktail. The Rebels well within their rights to litigate with respect to legal and contractual obligations. Where RA have always failed is through poor governance / stewardship of our great game. by allowing ex-players with little or no experience in strategic growth, sports admin, marketing, business development, communications, branding, fiscall discipline, etc to run our game, we all suffer as a collective . The game now needs a bust to grow again. The excesses and mismanagement of past are now coming home to roost.

He also missed a blatant forward pass that led to a crusaders try.

'No one backed us': $8 outsiders Waratahs upset Crusaders AGAIN as Edmed steps up to deliver famous win

Think we will see the 2022 vintage this year. Has taken him awhile to recover from injury. Gamble has huge potential and a player I’d back.

'No one backed us': $8 outsiders Waratahs upset Crusaders AGAIN as Edmed steps up to deliver famous win

Gamble had a great game. As did Gordon, Holloway, Edmed and Vailanu. All outstanding and laid the platform for that win.

'No one backed us': $8 outsiders Waratahs upset Crusaders AGAIN as Edmed steps up to deliver famous win

Conclusion: administration of the game has badly failed. Why? It has ignored the grassroots and the supporter base over many, many years whilst focusing on the walllabies and ‘the ‘money tree’ ie broadcaster revenue,. Why? Because we have ex players running the game up to board level and nepotism is rife. The fix? Clean up the governance and let the professionals move in. Ie allow those people with the appropriate skillset and proven expertise on corporate strategy, vision and execution. We now have a great ex player (Phil Waugh) calling the shots but way out of his depth in terms of proven experience and skillset.

'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams

Exactly

'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams

Agreed. This isn’t about how many super rugby teams we have. It’s about the lack of infrastructure underneath these teams – that aren’t producing these players. Say we put out 2 quality Australia A teams instead of 5 super teams, how then would we bridge the skills gap from local rugby? We need the fringe players to be playing long seasons of higher quality rugby. That’s why the kiwis produce a conveyor belt of players. The current super season is way too short to produce high quality, consistent players. Shute shield and Hospital Cup are not breeding the quality we need. Kearns views are symptomatic of the lack of vision coming out of Rugby Australia.

'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams

Fair enough. But my point is that we should let the teams compete to be part of the super 6. A comp based on merit and performance if highlanders are good enough to be in that 6 then so be it. What it will guarantee is competitive, top level rugby where teams are evenly matched. Div 2 super comp will have to compete to get promoted to super 6. But at least each teams fan base would be more engaged as they know they are a chance of winning in nearly almost every game they play – which is not the case now.

The Wrap: Opening round of SRP a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same

Lols. Here’s some content for broadcasters to consider… domestic super AU and domestic super NZ seasons. Both play home and away series separately to determine a domestic winner. Then we start a combined super pacific comp adding Fiji and anyone else such as USA, Japan and Argies. Except the pacific comp is split into 2 divisions. the top 6 teams play a home and away comp in div 1. Winners of both domestic comps are guaranteed entry into the division 1 super comp. Merit/performance based promotion/relegation. The rest can play in a division 2 super comp. This would make games more even with less predictable outcomes.

The Wrap: Opening round of SRP a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same

I wouldn’t put the highlanders in that category. They were rubbish last season. But a super 6 premier comp w/ just cru, chi, hurr, drua, brum and probably the reds has merit. The rest can play in super division 2 w/ promotion and relegation.

The Wrap: Opening round of SRP a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same

Yep. They borrowed 80mill against future revenue (WC + lions tour). With that 80m they cleared 30mill debt with WR (covid debt). So at the moment they are spending future income until the new tv deal is done. They need to look at ramping up content for tv deals, which includes 20-30% FTA. Try and get club rugby back on ABC, etc. That’s my understanding of their finances.

The Wrap: Code Orange as looming Rebels decision places rugby pathways at risk

There is not 80mill available. RA borrowed 80m, then weee left with 50m after clearing debt. They just committed 3m to the womens game. This leave 47m. They have also committed to paying rebels player and staff salaries this season – sum unknown. If they commit to clearing the rebels debt (20m) they’d probably only be left w/ 20m in the bank going forward and this is before rescuing and further debt laden franchises. Unfortunately the money just isn’t there to fix this. The next TV and sponsorship deals need to be substantial but I fear for the game in Australia because it has been grossly mismanaged.

The Wrap: Code Orange as looming Rebels decision places rugby pathways at risk

Can’t argue with that. You make a great point. Essentially it’s how ‘wealth’ is redistributed from a strategic approach focusing on the wallabies. It’s an important lesson learnt that if you neglect your grassroots you eventually starve your growth. I am a big believer in a strategic approach which focuses on your supporter base. Growth then becomes organic. Not forced like a top down approach.

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

We’ve always batted above our weight with 2 WC’s. It gave us a false sense of security. I blame a lot of this mess on clyne, pulver etc all useless and hopelessly out of their depth. Would be great if we could put together a 5 or 10 year strategic plan on the vision for Australian rugby. Is that too much to ask?? Maybe something similar to Irish rugby. https://www.irishrugby.ie/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IRFU_Strategic_Plan_2018-2023.pdf

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

“Wallabies fund growth” has been the mantra since S rugby inception. Nigh on 20 years. It’s dumb and shortsighted. The top down strategic approach has comeback to bite us hard. It was always going to happen. It’s now time to refocus on our supporter bases around the country. The grassroots that will keep this game alive and hopefully help it thrive. For too long they have been neglected.. It’s not lost on me that 3 or 4 board members are ex players with absolutely no experience as sports administration or business growth strategy. Repeat the problem/strategy. Don’t expect different outcomes.

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

I hear you, and yes money was wasted, but strategy was wrong. RA have made many mistakes. Would make more sense to pile money into Victorian grassroots and give them pathways to the wallabies. Obviously 20mill debt is unsustainable but RA is more at fault than rebels mismanagement. This is a structural problem.

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

If they fold then a golden opportunity for Melbourne to lead a new national comp. The growth opportunity that Melbourne and the wider Victorian community offers simply can’t be ignored. Make it semi-professional/whatever. Stan gets more content. Grow this game from the grassroots and where the support is. Bottoms up, not top down.

'It's pretty real': Rebels coach reveals trauma as Waugh makes surprising 'no correlation' claim after job losses

Hugely disappointing lessons are not being learnt. Excessive Pre-season injuries are generally due to over training or players not being managed/prepared properly. Makes sense if DC is under pressure to keep his job. But again it’s poor coaching. Blades has left and sounds like DC was focused on recruitment
