Yes, it’s ironic for a city which considers itself a ‘sporting capital’ yet most residents don’t know the difference between the two rugby codes…

That got me thinking, it would be good to have someone on the commentary team of Pacific heritage!

Just as long as they don’t get Ray Hadley back…

Hodge, at least, is a cool customer, and he can defend and kick. That is enough.

I think it’s a damage control team. Fair enough I reckon.

Reece Hodge at 10 as Dave Rennie makes huge changes to Wallabies team for Bledisloe 4

One should always be specific: “if you are born white in this country compared to Indigenous people you are privileged”.

That makes sense.

Not if we are talking about, say, race in Japan. Or comparing a wealthy immigrant from Asia and a poor white Australian living in a country town.

The Wallabies taking a knee is a matter of conscience

This all seems a bit of a storm in a teacup…

If I understand correctly, a journalist (perhaps mischievously) asked a Wallaby if they would ‘take the knee’ whilst wearing the Indigenous jersey. I don’t think the idea came from DHP or any other Wallaby, did it?

Nick Farr-Jones’ comments were absurd and really a terrible look for the game. Glad to see Glen Ella told him to shut it.

If people want to kneel I guess they will.

Personally I find the whole kneeling thing very American with its highly performative, very earnest and quasi-religious element… It’s amazing though how unable we are to critically analyse popular culture from the USA, as we are so bombarded by it!

Wallabies unveil new Indigenous jersey but want to attract more First Nations players

This would be a good move. I think Stan is actually more interesting than Netflix often as it actually has Australian content…

It would be great to have Super Rugby (or whatever follows it) on FTA. I do worry about Nine though, given its love of League… I think it was during the Rugby World Cup 2015 when they had the awful Ray Hadley commentating! Surely they wouldn’t do that again?!

Everyone says Super Rugby has never been on FTA. Is this true though? I seem to remember it being on Seven sometimes in the late 90s?

Nine reportedly enters rugby broadcast frame with bid for TV and streaming rights

Hi Moa and Geoff,

didnt mean that to come off as negative as it did, and yes I agree that different styles are a great thing about rugby.

I suppose it comes down to personal preference… Many rugby fans at least on this site lament the way the game is (sometimes) played traditionally by England and Sth Africa.

It is true that these things go in and then out of vogue (remember Brumbies style moves of early 2000s?)

The Wrap: Eight and a half crazy minutes light up the Bledisloe Cup

If it is the case that the ABs method is now less effective I, for one, am glad.
I’ve never thought being able to win a rugby match of Harlem Globetrotter style counter-attacks off opposition mistakes was good for the game. Rugby is made up of rucks, mauls, scrums, lineouts, kicking, forwards and backs set-pieces, as well as counter-attack.
Too many times over the last 5-10 years we have seen the ABs win matches, and win well, despite being outplayed by the opposition in the majority those gameplay categories.

The Wrap: Eight and a half crazy minutes light up the Bledisloe Cup

I think everyone who’s gone to NFL has failed though (except punters because kicking in NFL is incredibly easy compared to rugby, league or AFL)…

Like most sports it’s too hard to switch as an (almost) adult, isn’t it?

Wallabies coach yet to give up hope Joseph Suaalii will stick with rugby union

I hate it when CEOs sack hundreds of people and declare it “a nice opportunity”…

Rugby AU exploring local Rugby Championship hub for 2020 comp

Great article.

2 things though: all countries have their biased commentators (eg smug Murry Mexter, Justin Marshall, the old South African guy)…it provides a bit of light relief I think. I don’t really understand why people hate Kearns for that reason.

About a Trans-tasman competition: why would you add Japan, and all those other countries from Twiggy’s competition, when apparently the problem for Super Rugby for years now is that noone wants to watch teams from South Africa, Argentina, Japan?? Why would it be any different for a new competition?

The Wrap: Unravelling Australian rugby’s unholy war

The idea that 20-30 teams can win the FIFA World Cup is simply untrue.

In 80 years only 8 teams have win, and some of them are unlikely to win again e.g. Uruguay and possibly even England.

Sadly, I think South American powerhouses of Brazil and Argentina (who haven’t won for 20 and 30 years respectively) are likely to become less competitive over time, as they can’t match wealthier nations in terms of domestic structure.

In 30 years of the Rugby World Cup there have already been 4 winners, and there could possibly be a 5th this tournament, although unlikely…

World Cup group stage more of an exhibition than a contest

I think that all the South American players playing overseas has both (obviously) hurt the quality of their domestic competitions, and actually hurt the performances of their national sides, with Colombia never having won the World Cup and Brazil not since 2002 and Argentina not since 1986…

There has to be a balance somehow, but I’m not sure how that can be achieved…

Will Australian rugby become a farm for the north?

You are quite sanctimonious.

The fact is, since 1970, in 13 World Cups, the same 5 teams have won, except for Spain in 2010. The last time developing countries won were Brazil in 2002 and Argentina in 1986. The divide is widening, not decreasing…

If rugby's World Cup had begun in the same era as football's

People only remember the winners, not who came second… And bronze playoff is a joke in all sports.

I’m not denying that it is the most popular sport, however it is also incredibly unequal in terms of resources and becoming more so.

Secondly, the fact that clubs control the game effects the World Cup itself. How many non-friendly tests do top-tier rugby international sides play with their top players in between Rugby World Cups, allowing them to develop combinations etc?

Compare that to football teams. Most (all?) of them are cobbled together like the Samoan rugby side at the RWC.

If rugby's World Cup had begun in the same era as football's

Football, though, is not much better, despite it’s much longer history of World Cups.
Only 8 teams have won it and, some of those seemingly cannot win in the near future (perhaps sadly never) e.g. Uruguay and England, maybe even Argentina…

My prediction about the future of the FIFA world cup is that developing/poorer nations e.g. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, even Italy will struggle more and more…

Thanks to the insane uber-capitalist European club leagues

If rugby's World Cup had begun in the same era as football's

It’s not brave to spout anti-gay rhetoric… You don’t have to admire it.
Oh and , free speech doesn’t exist, and nor should it.

Australia decides: Who would vote for Izzy?

Minimum, Folau should be rubbed out till the World Cup. Then, he might understand that posting that stuff is unacceptable…
Unfortunately, I think he’s too close-minded to get it and, regardless of his penalty, he will do it again…

Australia decides: Who would vote for Izzy?

That’s funny, because I have supported a number of different SS teams over the years.
As a kid I supported Randwick because it was great to watch Campo, Gregan etc play for them
At Uni I supported Sydney Uni, then when I lived in North Sydney I supported Norths and then Randwick again when I lived near their oval.
Now I might have to go for Southern Districts, as I’ve already been to a St George Dragons game so…

However, admittedly all the suburbs/areas I’ve lived in have had SS teams

The Wrap: Is Rugby Australia about to kill off the NRC, and if so, what happens next?

I think RA will win.

If an Australian university can sack a Professor for showing an image of an Israeli flag superimposed with part of a swastika, and academics are protected by “academic freedom” clauses, they can sack Israel Folau for repeated infringements.
