Thorn is a quality coach, that is a real point of difference to many coaches in Aus today. I am not sure if long term it will work, and he will go on successfully and into the Wallabies, for example. But it is got for Au rugby to have a coach that is a point of difference, and maybe he is what is needed.

Scott Barrett may miss the birth of his baby, which is later on in the year. Very unlikely to get a quarantine spot for it. In addition we maybe missing these three for the boks too. Who knows when the babies will arrive, and after two weeks stuck in a hotel room they’re unlikely to be ready to go straight into s test versus the best team in the world. The dead rubber bled (we do awful on those), and weakened team makes this RC a real challenge

Even beating the Boks twice won’t take number 1 spot, Oz and Argentina need to as well, they are so many points ahead. Also ABs need to not lose at all, looking at Foster’s fantastic team last year, really looking unlikely

100% true. In addition, unlike Rennie, foster has been part of the team for years, he has not had to work from scratch. He is part of the team that had our first loss to Ireland. He is part of the team that have continually promised more physicality in the forwards, and yet were man handled by England when it counted. He is assist of the team that said it had answers to aggressive rush defence, but never had when it counted. He was instrumental in the bad idea of replacing cane in the semi with Barrett for line out dominance, and then watching the team never actually attack the English lineout. Rennie also had a very successful head coach record at lower levels, Foster’s was a disaster for the chiefs. Foster and Rennie are apples and pears.
Foster is proving that not anyone can coach the ABs, the attacking shape of the ABs was non existent for 50 odd mins, just a bit of mo’unga brilliance making us look good.
Really, the ABs annus mirabilis of 2016 against an entire globe on rebuild stuffed us going forward. Hansen stayed in to coach against the lions, and was then to step aside. If he did, we would have gotten 2 years of foster, and I’m totally sure a similar rubbish performance in the RWC. Now we would be onto year 2 of a coach that innovates, not does the same thing tried unsuccessfully for the last 4 years.
The boks victory at the RWC, and the turgid but physical nature of the lions tour had pointed to needing a massive shift from the ABs to beat that, when it really counts, in the world cup. The ABs aren’t going to do that by out bokking the bokke, so we need real innovation in tactics.
Foster will probably bumble along until then, even though he should have resigned after the awful performance in the loss to Argentina, NZR don’t have the guts to chop him. NZR are not well run ATM, see the silver lake mess, and the way they arrogantly treated their SANZAAR partners with their ‘were are super rugby’ declaration. So NZR will stick with foster, cos we’ll do ok against Oz, and a tired SA. They’ll stick, despite foster declaring the aim of this year is to takes world number 1 and we won’t. Then come France 2023 the ABs will have no answer to a grindingly boring and effective gameplan, and will be physically dominated again.

A) the boks and puma already have quarantine places booked in Oz.
B) there are no quarantine places left in NZ until November, this you see RTS leaving the warriors early to get in during this open week
C) Ozzie team quarantine rules much less restrictive than NZ, the main reason why the games were in Oz last time. I think they even have a dedicated to sports team hotel and training ground set up, France used it
There is no way at all the RC will be anywhere other than Oz, it’s either Oz or cancel. My worry is the ABs head over to Oz after first two bleds, they may not be able to get back into NZ until after NH tour

I’m not glad at all they are setting up in Auckland. How is it a Pacifika team if it is Auckland? It will reduce the Blues fan base, and also it’s player base. A big slie of Tongan and Samoan internationals are Kiwis, NZ born and bred, this will be another drain on NZ SR teams depth. But maybe they’ll only pick players from the islands – like they should be and the Drua mostly do?But I don’t think that will be the case, especially as the team has to be competitive from the off.
I think they are dreaming if the think the like of the Vunipolas are going to come back and play for them, losing all that illegal Saracen’s cash, and the richest RU. Add to that high level players NZ based like Ardie Savea have already said they might be interested in the places for non PI eligible, seems there will be a handful allowed. Looking at this season, the depth is shallow in NZ, aside from the Crusaders the other teams are looking very average to poor.
