Youth isn’t the answer: The Swans must target delisted free agents instead

Geoff I enjoy your articles and agree with much of what you say, but this is wrong and I suspect you know it. I love sticking the boot in to Clarke, but in this instance he did the right thing.

Had Clarke walked out instead of Maxwell at the fall of Warner’s wicket the collective groan from the crowd may well have registered on the Richter scale. Everyone, bar a few public commentators, wanted to see the Aussies go for the 400.

Imagine if Clarke had come in for some practice and used up 40 balls getting to 20 – keeping in mind Perth isn’t the easiest place to start an innings. A much bigger and louder media contingent would be calling him selfish and egotistical for putting his own needs before that of the team. Picture him taking his time, pushing singles, playing proper cricket shots, then being dismissed before he had the chance to up his run rate. Pure media massacre!

By the time Smith was dismissed there were a handful of overs left, and yes, Clarke probably should have come in before Marsh or Haddin and swung from ball one. But that’s a side issue seeing as it wouldn’t have provided any benefit in terms of the centre wicket time he needs.

Ultimately, Clarke did the right thing by the team and the fans.

Another chance Af-gone-istan after Clarke inexplicably hides

“If there was a player to go it would be either Watson, Cowan or Hughes” – do explain? Hughes made a well composed and unbeaten 81 in the first innings, yet he’s on the list of potential outs?

I think you might want to have a rethink?

We must stick steady with steady Eddy

+1

Smith looked composed, patient, and positive in the first innings. Looks a much improved batsman.
