Alternate reality: Rennie stays on, and within budget, and we make the QF.
McLennan is still here. Waugh is riding high as chairman. The rebels situation doesn’t seem as dire.
Oh and the roosters stop poaching sons of ex-leaguies.
Everything is completely fine for another 16 years.
Sure it is!
Eddie puts his foot in it again by claiming 'no regrets' after leaving Wallabies in 'a better place'
Am I the last person in the world to see that playing overseas teams is a massive deterrent to sponsors in NZ and Aus throwing buckets of cash at the game? Surely there has to be more eyes on sponsorship panels within the relevant market? That must be a huge reason for the cash shortfall in the game, no?
I’ve got a Stan sport sub due to the rwc so it was a treat to watch a bit of SR over the weekend for the first time in over a decade.
Very well-written article thank you.

My original comment was shit. Thanks for calling it out
Shock twist in racism saga as Mam responds to Leniu's apology for monkey taunt
I meant this particular article, not the entire episode. And that the panthers won’t miss leniu if that’s what is going on in his head.

Well you can’t have Australia dominating china via a PNG rugby league team if Aussies actually start following the world game so as mad as your comment sounds, follow the money to Vegas/Fox/Murdoch etc etc
How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?
I worked as an usher at the gabba in 2008. Great experience. A mexican wave (outlawed for the past 13 months at that stage) started in a section I had just come into oversight of. I gave the guys a warning that it isn’t allowed any more. No problem. 2 minutes later the stormtroopers arrived demanding blood. I said no problem it’s sorted. The officer said “it’s all on camera it’s your job on the line!”
So I quit and haven’t been back.
The state of policing creates dumb citizens out of the good ones and even worse citizens out of the bad ones.

Copper Cronk’s achievements for the roosters capped a truly remarkable career. I can’t see that being done again in quite the same way by a halfback.
Roosters roster looks good on paper but lacking crucial ingredients to create recipe for premiership success
Good question.
Why would a successful organisation such as the Storm have anything to do with an Australian SR franchise?
'We needed that': Gordon, Kellaway star in Rebels' epic comeback win as Force capitulate
So basically SR should have been abandoned 10 years ago
COMMENT: This is the real reason why the Force were cut in 2017
The smart thing for any future US RL organisation would be just to call itself “Rugby” and not use the word League. And try to just dominate the other code out of existence

There has to be a better financial model than SR
Poaching NZ coaches won't solve the Wallabies' woes - the real solution is a lot less sexy
I’ve never liked the super format, seems it is trying to be equal to NRL level and also State of Origin – but ending up being neither.
If RA is to persist with SR, then the pathway just needs to be reserve grade for all 5 Super franchises, whilst possibly including a couple of wealthy club sides. That’s the model for an NRC. But with consistency of pathways through the super franchises all the way through.
Aussie rugby is shooting itself in the foot over its recruitment strategy. It must change to give Wallabies a RWC hope

I reckon that manu actually has the perfect skillset and mindset and physicality for rugby. Team player who can sit quiet all game but produce magic when it’s on. I think he suits better than Benji, RTS, Izzy, Suki, Wendell…and could be up there with Rogers, Tuqiri and Andrew Walker as far as successes go
'It's an option': Manu serious about potential rugby switch as Roosters star closes in on huge contract call
When fundamental systems such as health and education are broken, corruption is rife across government and a decent chunk of the population live a standard of life that Australians simply could not comprehend- there’s other areas that many people would rather see prioritised above bringing online a professional rugby league team.
I mean you could be talking about Australia here. And standards that Australia 20 years ago wouldn’t believe.

That was always and remains unfathomable

I’d get rid of the word Super before doing anything else.
Re additional teams, look at the nrl and the dolphins. It’s a 70yo club with rich history…and $100m in the bank. It’s an existing structure and culture, not a cobbled together consortium that is bound to do more harm than good to local leagues (see: Adelaide rams, western reds) and/or be constantly at risk of shutting down (rebels, force). So I think there is space for an existing club to be promoted and to bring its fan base along while keeping lower grades active for pathways (reserve grade!).
Start with 5 plus an additional Bris and Sydney team, and add as the talent and finances stack up.
The more I write the more I’m really not excited by keeping the existing SR clubs….shut them down and let RA re-franchise.
Rebels told they will play Super Rugby in 2024 but future on shaky ground as voluntary administration looms
Good read!
Rebels told they will play Super Rugby in 2024 but future on shaky ground as voluntary administration looms
Super Rugby needs to go the way of Super League already.
Cut it back to two teams, a green team and a gold team.
Start an 8 team national comp, 2 in Bris, 3 in Syd, ACT, Melbourne and Perth. Get some derbies and allow players to start getting accustomed to being paid to WIN.
SR sucks. Always has. Always will. But the boat has sailed and now the domestic game is going to resemble Australian soccer, or Pacific Island rugby. Best to shore it up, get a competition going that locals can actually care about – look, it works for basketball here.

Agree. Hooper was good but never made anyone else around him better, so forgive a 23yo who’s barely won a rugby match for a couple of foundering organisations for not understanding what leadership and responsibility is about.
