Most important is that he’s improving all the time, working on his game and perfecting the basics. And he potentially has 10 years ahead of him. If we all check back around 2025, then there’s a fair chance that he’ll be second only to Murali on the all-time offies list.

How does the GOAT Lyon stack up against his peers?

Worst thing that could happen to Hayne – if he’s on the active roster at the end of the season then he’ll be contracted to the 49ers for another year. He’ll be happy to play, and good luck to him but it must be such a nightmare for everyone playing under York, Baalke and Tomsula.

Hayne recalled to 49ers' 53-man active squad, set to play Detroit

He just turned 22. I thought his test debut came way too early to be healthy, as did his recent A-Tour and ODI selection. Give him at least two more years of shield cricket to mature and to earn his place.

Is Ashton Agar a bowler or a batsman?

Sorry, but the value of that big hundred is next to nothing. The WI would struggle in grade cricket and if you watched the game you’d know that Burns got probably the only wicket ball, Warner and Smith were out tonking the ‘spinner’ and Marsh and Voges feasted on the easiest bowling you’ll ever see in a test match.

I don’t know why we’re even pretending that there’s a conundrum here except that there’s a history of questionable selection around S. Marsh. On common sense, Khawaja just slots back in for Marsh as soon as he’s fit.

Picking Marsh over Burns would be folly

You don’t have to be Nostradamus to predict this one:

– Shaun Marsh will do just enough to keep his place
– Someone else will be unlucky to miss out
– Marsh will reward the selectors with a run of single-digit scores
– He’ll look incredibly stylish in doing so
– Everyone on here will kick up a massive fuss.

What if Shaun Marsh does well in Hobart?

Yep. You could see that coming a mile off. Textbook technique but mentally not test class.

Australia vs New Zealand highlights: Third Test – Day 3 cricket final scores

Harmy? I just checked his website, no sign of greatness there. If you want to look for yourself: www.wwwwwww…

Who are the 'greats' of modern Test cricket?

Picking on form then you have to go with Cowan or Klinger. In fact, by most measures you’ll find that Marsh isn’t first pick.

Don, I admire your creative use of selective stats and ever-persistent commenting but most people would agree with Glenn.

Shaun Marsh's selection confirms it's Groundhog Day

Thanks, Glenn – you’ve summed up brilliantly what a lot of people have been saying for a while about Shaun Marsh. It’s so hard to believe that they persist with him – they’re getting most things right these days but this is just one big running joke.

Look forward to 114, 6 / 17, 0 / Khuwaja ‘not quite right yet’ / 24, 0 …

Shaun Marsh's selection confirms it's Groundhog Day

This series died for NZ with the Southee injury. Boult is a wonderful bowler but he needs support at the other end. Craig not at test standard in these conditions and the rest of the quicks would struggle to make a shield attack. I can see a lot of batting resistance, but not where 20 wickets are going to come from.

New Zealand must deny Australia momentum

How about bringing in a genuine 2nd division comp and promotion / relegation? It would make the bottom of the ladder genuinely exciting again. Div 2 could revive the Bears, Newtown, split Wests and Balmain up again (I bet the fans would prefer their old club back in Division 2 with a chance of promotion), some Brisbane teams plus Perth, Darwin, Wellington and PNG. Or doesn’t that work in our US franchise style NRL?

Are the Bears necessary in an expanded NRL competition?

NZ is a small country that has some brilliant cricketers but also a lack of depth. There isn’t that much bowling after Southee and Boult, they can have you 5-60 but if one or both are off their lines (too short today) then there’s no support and you have a day of easy scoring.

How on earth are the Aussies short-priced favourites?

Seriously?

D/N test cricket is both inevitable and essential in counteracting the increasing dominance of hit-and-giggle short-form cricket. Yes, the pink ball may not yet be perfect (cue Duke vs Kookaburra debate) and probably behaves differently to a red ball in terms of swing and wear but those of you who are panning it now have never seen a test played with the thing, yet alone held one in their hand. It’s been tried in the shield and elsewhere and not been the disaster this article makes it out to be. At least give pink a fair go before you dismiss the thing out of hand…

The day-night Test must be abandoned

Cricket and whatever winter code you may mean by football are two different worlds in my experience.

I agree with you and Chappelli, I think Smith should stay at 3. If the team is picked as things seem to be panning out then there’s enough balance there that way. Warner + Bancroft open (experienced VC + rookie), then following Smith you’ll have one of Burns, M Marsh or Khawaja, all relatively inexperienced. Voges has tons of experience, though not at test level, but he should give enough balance at 5. He’ll keep his spot after today’s knock.

Steve Smith at No.4 'ridiculous': Chappell

Haha, good point.

Steve Smith at No.4 'ridiculous': Chappell

The only person deciding where Smith bats is the man himself. If he’d rather drop back to 4 then so be it.

Chappelli has always used strong words in his commentary but now that a lot of other voices (Richie and Tony, sorely missed) have gone he seems to create a lot of headlines. What he’s saying (basically that he’d rather see Smith at 3) is just as balanced and intelligent as always, but it seems to get blown up more. Or maybe it’s just the Roar headline writers?

Steve Smith at No.4 'ridiculous': Chappell

Surely “funny” and “intelligent” are both absolute no-gos on the Channel 9 team?

Still space for Siddle in my Test side to face New Zealand

This whole sledging / aggression talk is missing the whole point. The best sides give you nowhere to hide – no inaccurate change bowlers, no easy runs, no gifted wickets, no collapses. The most positive change during the ashes was bringing in Siddle, not because he’s more / less aggressive but because he didn’t ease up after Johnson / Starc (hopefully) created some pressure. You can be aggressive all you like, but if you (or the next bloke) bowls filth then you won’t get anywhere.

Australia need to be hostile in New Zealand Test series

I’m not a fan of niche sports at the olympics, especially for teams, and i’m afraid that’s what cricket would be. It would make hosting even more expensive and wouldn’t give cricket any more exposure. Do you still remember who won the softball before they cancelled it? Didn’t think so…

Also there’s a danger that winning the olympics remains secondary within the sport – much like soccer or basketball now. In soccer, winning the world cup is a million times more important than olympic gold and in basketball, a lot of the NBA stars don’t turn up. If cricket does feature then the olympics should be the most important thing you can win. That’s difficult if teams like England and the WI aren’t there properly and if the game is T20 and not test cricket.

Why cricket needs to be part of the Olympics

You’re a bowler short, mate!

What will be Australia's top six at the Gabba?

Yep, 6 innings, out 4 times to Swann, once to Root and one early caught behind off Broad, average 19. I hear his footwork has improved and he did well in India this year so let’s hope it’s not such a big problem anymore.

What will be Australia's top six at the Gabba?

Bancroft
Warner
Smith
Khawaja
Voges
M Marsh

Bancroft can concentrate for hours and restrict his game in tough conditions. The lineup needs someone solid at the top who can bat for long periods and through difficult sessions. Yes, he is 22 and therefore untested, but now is surely the time for youth and he deserves his chance.

The other spots are tougher. I’d prefer Smith to stay at 3 but of course it’s his call. M Marsh stays as the incumbent all-rounder, leaving 4 and 5 between Burns, Khawaja, S Marsh and Voges. None of them really pick themselves. Voges was picked as VC for Bangladesh and I think someone with his experience is sorely needed. Nothing wrong with his batting, though his form isn’t great and he should keep his spot at 5.

That leaves one spot at 4 – I was a big fan of Burns but it looks like his technique has been exposed against the moving ball. If he plays then it should be at 5/6, but not opening and hence I’d leave him out. He’s young enough to fix his technique and make it back. That leaves S Marsh and Khawaja, both of whom have been there before. Khawaja looks much more like a test cricketer than S Marsh, though Marsh is the one much loved by the selectors. He does look great when he’s in but all too often he gets out early. I don’t think he has the concentration needed for test match cricket, and it shows up in the difference between his test and ODI stats. The doubts re Khawaja are about his miserable footwork against spin, which won’t be relevant against NZ, and his character. He’s been leading the A-Team now, he’s worked on his fielding and I think he’s come a long way in the last 2 years. Give him a decent chance and see what happens!
