What the last two matches have proven is the Matildas lack the high-end skill of some of the European sides, and the USA of the previous decade. We had a brilliant campaign, I’m not denying that, but the gap in class showed on Wednesday, as well as tonight.
Classy Sweden deny Matildas third-placed finish as Gustavsson keeps status quo
Starting Charlie Grant, for example, was an option especially after Carpenter’s shocker. Fowler was obviously cooked and should not have started.
Classy Sweden deny Matildas third-placed finish as Gustavsson keeps status quo
No worries, mate.
No, the goal wouldn’t have been reversed on those grounds. Once the corner has been taken, it’s considered a new phase of play and VAR cannot rule on it. Had the ref not made the call to reverse the goal so quickly VAR would have looked at it and hopefully picked up Renard’s foul, but the incorrect corner call was old news in any case.
The Great Vine: Cortnee fires Matildas through to first ever semi-final after epic shootout win over France
Renard clearly tugs back Caitlin Foord before Kennedy heads the ball. Absolutely the right call but I’m surprised the on-field ref called it so quickly. Well done to her.
The Great Vine: Cortnee fires Matildas through to first ever semi-final after epic shootout win over France
It’s a good point. Seven clearly underestimated the interest in teams other than the Matildas. Ultimately it’s a commercial decision, so I can understand, but a bit disappointing too.
Good, Bad & Ugly: Fantastic crowds, Matildas redemption and Olympic champions crash out
Hi mate, me too made a similar point below as well.
Overall, the quality of the tournament has been excellent. Plenty of upsets in head-to-head matches, as well as group standings. I still think it was perhaps a bit too soon to expand, if you look at sides like Panama, for example, even though Cox provided the goal of the tournament so far.
I could have mentioned in the article that things will be very different in women’s football in four years. My sincere hope is as many players around the world as possible have access to professional standard facilities, and then 32 teams won’t seem a stretch at all.
Good, Bad & Ugly: Fantastic crowds, Matildas redemption and Olympic champions crash out
Sorry if my comment came off as a bit blunt, but I can’t see it ever being removed entirely.
Give us back football's soul: Why FIFA must listen to World Cup's bandwagon fans and end this joy-sucking disaster
Moot point – decision accuracy is increased with VAR. It will never be removed. Tweaked? Sure.
Give us back football's soul: Why FIFA must listen to World Cup's bandwagon fans and end this joy-sucking disaster
It was an odd decision by Football Australia. I don’t think it came from FIFA.
'Something special about this group': Raso brace seals victory over Olympic champions as Matildas through to round of 16
My bad. Still, destiny was in their own hands today, at a home World Cup, and couldn’t get it done.
Trust me, I’ve had much, much harsher words for our own team.
Women's World Cup equations: What every team must do to make the KO stages
Real lack of quality in that side, unfortunately. Set themselves up well with four points in the first two games but the Swiss were always going to be a difficult task.
Women's World Cup equations: What every team must do to make the KO stages
Come on, mate, Alanna Kennedy is a natural No.9.
You make a good point, but conversely if Kerr starts then hobbles off that is a huge mental blow potentially early on. Twenty-four hours to go, let’s see what he does.
Women's World Cup equations: What every team must do to make the KO stages
We can but will need to be miles better than in the first two games. I can’t really see it transpiring, to be blunt, but a home World Cup just cannot end with a whimper.
'He'll look back with regret': Matildas coach admits 'strange' call as hosts on brink of World Cup elimination
Sure beats sneaking out for some KFC (although that was still more exciting than playing handball).
Caicedo stars as classy Colombia defeat South Korea
Been an awesome experience to work on this tournament. Only regret is I can’t sit back with a vodka and coke, and really relax.

Blue skies here at the SFS. Should be a good one.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
That’s my bad, I’d seen that number and a few empty seats at other games and extrapolated. As usual, NoMates has no idea.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
I’ve been impressed with them. I’m not advocating them as the savouirs of Aus football, but they have really shaped up since the early days.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
Granted, yes, the crowds across the ditch have been a bit disappointing. Can you at least acknowledge some of the fantastic scenes here at home?
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
Grem, Nick isn’t wrong on this one. If you’re staying in Asia but not going to Japan or Korea, you’re going backwards from a football perspective – you can’t refute that.
How big is Indian football? Ask Jason Cummings
Your doom and gloom shtick is digestible – just – but please don’t invent things out of thin air. 39,000 people there last night for two countries with healthy but not huge expat populations.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
Shaw was excellent, looking a bit like Foord the other night – all on her own.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
Every football team in the world does the same, but perhaps not to the same extent. I agree it was a dumb tackle but a questionable yellow.
Shaw sent off as Reggae Girlz hold wasteful France to stalemate for first-ever World Cup point
I think a genuine fear of football’s potential is part of it, another part is just pure disdain for the game, as well as some journos’ self-importance, having to comment on every sports story.
It’s true, there’s nothing stopping Dan Ginnane and Dean Ritchie from commenting on our beautiful game. But there’s too much energy wasted on getting mad at guys like that – just ignore them.
Catley penalty saves Matildas' blushes in front of record crowd as Kerr to miss Nigeria clash
And to the point you and Brainstrust were making, the ref tonight obviously didn’t punish Sweden for those niggly fouls. That will always be a part of the game, and if we possessed better players, they would be able to overcome the cynical tactics by playing better football.
