I don’t understand the campaign against Tedesco, it’s been going on for 18 months or so with many ridiculous comments about him being only the third best fullback at the Roosters. Teddy is still the best defensive fullback in the game, provides the same high work rate and involvement on both sides of the ball as Edwards (or Gutho). I could go with Ponga or Edwards if Teddy was injured, but it’s taken the Knights 3 seasons to work out how to play consistent winning footy with Ponga. How much prep do the Kangaroos have? 7 days? Where is the urgency to throw Teddy under the bus?

Kangaroos squad analysis: Mal talks up specialists - but where are the backrowers?

The line break is not through or past Reynolds, Cleary gaps the hole between Riki and Walsh. The defensive error is by Riki who fails to advance with the defensive line and leaves the hole for Cleary to exploit. I invite you to watch it again.

Yep, Cleary cuts back towards the posts and gets through the gap left by the tired defenders who have not worked hard enough on the inside. Clear as daylight. Where is the error by Reynolds?

Agree. The ruck penalty was uncalled for as it was inconsistent with the entire game. The refs could have called 20 more penalties if that one was the standard for the game… in regular season there would have been 15 flops called in this game, and who knows how many for the defensive lines jumping early… and way less fatigue in the last 20 minutes of this intense cliffhanger of a GF. The difference in officiating between regular season vs SOO and GF is hilarious.

Grand Final player ratings - Penrith Panthers: Cleary goes from shocker to perfect 10, Leota's epic impact

Paul, how can you claim it was Reynolds that missed the tackle on Cleary for the final try? That is misleading. I invite you to watch it again, this Cleary try was no fault of Reynolds.

I wonder if you missed Cleary’s defensive efforts for the first 60 minutes? Same with Reynolds, both halfbacks were made to do plenty of tackling, and both defended really well – but Cleary is only 25 and in supreme condition, whereas Reynolds is 35, physically worn out and busted from a tackle in the first half.

Yep, a one-on-one missed tackle by a fatigued Capewell for the Cleary line break that led to the Leora try; a huge effort by the excellent Crichton; and finally a momentary lapse by a fatigued Riki and Walters when Cleary had his juices flowing, that one yard of effort from the inside that Cleary was good enough and determined enough to exploit… only one team had momentum and energy at the death, and that was the ballgame. Penrith won many games with late second half comebacks in 2019 and 2020, but those wins didn’t seem so miraculous as the 2023 GF win.

ANALYSIS: No matter what you do, Penrith will get you eventually - just ask the Broncos

If the Broncos won they would have awarded the gong to Mam for his hatrick of tries, but it was the Broncos committed defence that was winning the game until fatigue and Cleary wore them out.

I reckon that’s harsh. The Broncos made the GF when Souths couldn’t make the 8 to play finals. Souths look like they could really use a calm headed game manager, someone with the chops to tell the prima donnas in the team to stop behaving like spoiled brats and focus on winning the footy game. That could have, should have been Souths in the top 4 competing for the premiership.

I wonder if you missed Crichton‘s incredible contributions in kick chase and a flawless defensive masterclass? He was brilliant and may be the biggest loss from the Panthers in four years. I thought he and Edwards were the Panthers best 80 minute performers. And… that Cleary fella sure grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck late in the game when fatigue really set in.

Grand Final player ratings - Penrith Panthers: Cleary goes from shocker to perfect 10, Leota's epic impact

The broncos lost due to one defensive miss from Capewell, a momentary defensive lapse by Rikki and Walters for the final Cleary try. Neither Reynolds nor Walsh was involved.

You say Walsh will learn from this performance. I’m not sure what he should learn? A couple of chances didn’t come off but the Broncos attack relies on his high speed game. He didn’t have a poor game, but he was pretty well constrained by a committed Penrith defence… just as the Penrith attack was very well disrupted by a committed Broncos defence… they couldn’t play attacking shape to To’o at all. People just need to stop pretending Walsh is the new Billy Slater… he’s not. That’s the first time I’ve seen him targeted at all whereas Slater was regularly targeted and roughed up. I don’t know if modern playmakers appreciate how well the modern rules look after them. As for Reynolds, we may never learn how bad his injury was in the first half. But I agree with you about Capewell who was palmed off for a one-on-one missed tackle on Cleary for the line break that enabled the Leota try that began the Penrith comeback. A tough assignment playing 80 minutes in such a high intensity game. Anyway, don’t be too hard on players that would have been gassed after 20 minutes of that intensity.

Seems like the decision was made for reasons that were unrelated to the actual coaching role, with Fittler thinking that the job should continue to have a broader development and promotional role. But the NSW board… why did it take until grand final week for them to communicate that they still wanted Fittler for coach but in a more limited role? This absence of leadership and direction won’t help NSW win a chook raffle.

Fittler's abrupt resignation leaves Blues in state of disrepair with no coach keen to take on poisoned chalice

So… now NSW have no coaching team and no plan. Are we in a “rebuilding” phase?

I don’t mind who wins the 2023 GF, but I’d love a close contest that doesn’t leave us talking about referees and BS decisions.

ANALYSIS: Walsh puts Panthers on notice as Broncos crush Warriors to deliver first Grand Final since 2015

Regular forward passes from dummy half aren’t funny either.
I hope the Warrior’s have another ripping year in 2024.

'The forward pass was so wrong it wasn’t funny': Did a refereeing 'howler' cost the Warriors?

If Walsh had “9” on his jersey no one would have noticed, especially the commentators.

Tevaga must not be “too fast” for the officials 🙂

Hi Mike, i realise i am very late to this conversation, but didn’t NRL head office further close the window on international footy by increasing the length of the NRL season and now the multi year Vegas gambling cash grab? I realise Vegas doesn’t extend season length, but it means greater pre-season planning and impost on 4 clubs… and NRL head office still shows no interest in finalising an agreement with the RLPA.

NRL needs to get CBA deal sorted so we can have more international rugby league

Thanks for the explanation Mike, appreciated.

Tonga squad: Taumalolo, AFB, Keaon and Haumole to lead stacked squad on pioneering tour of England

As a Dragons supporter, i only feel that way about the bunnies. The “culture of arrogance and conceit, of “gamesmanship” (cheating, baiting and poor sportsmanship)” is a great description of Souths, a team that could still be in the hunt for the 2023 if they focused a bit more on playing footy. Plenty of teams go overboard with try celebrations, it’s a bit selective claiming that is exclusive to Penrith.
