To be fair, New Zealanders don’t want an Australian, and in fact don’t want any non-New Zealander to coach the All Blacks, and NZR have never considered a candidate from outside NZ to coach them.
Schmidt is now the third New Zealander to coach the Wallabies, so RA has been far more open in this respect.

'It can be something great': Schmidt turns to 'scrum doctor' as next step in Wallabies rebuild

An NRC is a cash drain (on top of SR) that Australia can’t afford. NZR can’t even afford to run it’s current NPC, and needed outside financial assistance recently, and are currently seeking to reform the NPC system to make it less cash draining due to the failure of SRP.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

Rob is right JD Kiwi. You open yourself up to criticism because you do cherry-pick constantly.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

And culturally irrelevant due to the dominance of the VFA & VFL Cec.

The Wrap: Good news and bad news for Rugby Australia as Brumbies and Rebels win local derbies

Australia had an extended golden era from the early 80’s till the early 2000’s. The Wallabies have reverted to a pre-80’s mediocrity, as evidenced by their lack of Bledisloe Cup success in 20+ years.
I would only assume Brendan that due to the prolonged slide of Aus, and improvement of the rest, that those particular countries would have more success vs Aus.

Just natural cycles of sport. I don’t jump on and write an article about something to push my preferred narrative.

How did he cheat??

EXCLUSIVE: Schmidt to appoint David Warner as Wallabies leadership consultant

I love how Shane Watson called him out. 😁

You mean the places where the sport has had cultural relevance since the 19th century?

The Wrap: Good news and bad news for Rugby Australia as Brumbies and Rebels win local derbies

They are legit criticisms. You just don’t like being told this though. You’re jumping on a golden generation or two for Ireland (and Italy breaking even in the 2024 6N) to promote your favoured model of domestic competition, yet don’t mention Wales or Scotland, and the basketcases they’ve turned into in recent history.

Wow, Launceston?! 😱

'Island defended': Tasmania make history in cliffhanger win over United to claim first NBL championship

Once again, you’re being disingenuous. Rugby union is a tiny niche sport globally, where NZ & SAF have the natural advantage due to cultural dominance in their countries (at least with the white minority in SAF).
NZ’s true international rivals are: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga…and none of these countries have the population/playing numbers and economies to challenge the likes of NZ, SAF etc on a consistent basis.
SAF defended their world cup in 2023 after completely withdrawing (after NZR took unilateral action without consultation) from SR back in 2020. So not sure why you’re trying to link it to WC success???

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

I’ve made this argument countless times with you. You’re too parochial about it to admit the massive flaws.
You jumped on Italian “success” (breaking even) in the 2024 Six Nations to push the SR style development model that you are biased towards.

The disaster is the competition they play in, and the way RA & NZR treat that competition.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

This is disingenuous and highly misleading. NZ, Aus & SAF were the first three world cup winners before the advent of professionalism. In the professional era they have been joined by England alone as WC winners. In fact, they’re still waiting for a new RWC Finalist since SAF (at their first attempt!) way back in 1995! 😱
I’m not sure anyone would buy you linking SR to success.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

Tell that to the NRL, who have the wildly successful Melbourne Storm franchise despite little interest in the sport at the grassroots level there.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

Nobody is saying that youth development isn’t a good thing, including myself. This doesn’t change the facts regarding SR though.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

Don’t think you mentioned that at all in your article, and in fact the first thing you mention (and what you basically focus on) in your article is that the national side was more competitive recently, specifically in the 2024 edition of the Six Nations competition, where the boast is they “broke even”.
Ironic that isn’t the main point of your article (if your stats are true) that rugby in Italy has achieved such a mind-blowing growth in popularity! 😱

And the main problem in Australia isn’t the expansion of professional franchises, but the absolutely hopeless competition they play in (SR/SRP). The NRL (with the Melbourne Storm) have shown how to expand into a growth market and capture the attention of new people. The bizarre and archaic amateur era model that RA & NZR still pursue with SRP will never see it thrive unless they start to take professionalism seriously.

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

The sport won’t grow in Italy by revolving around two professional franchises used as a development vehicle for either 100% of, or the overwhelming majority of, the Italian national side’s playing stock. This is purely done to hope that the national side can genuinely compete at the international level, and they might possibly win a Six Nations one day.
This is the financially and culturally failing model that won’t see the sport grow in Italy and has rapidly seen the sport decline in Australia in the past 15-20 years. Betting all the chips on the national team having success to grow the sport domestically is a doomed road. Even NZ can’t make this model work, with NZR recently seeking outside financial assistance (US PE company Silver Lake) to help prop up this failing business model!

How Italy revolutionised their youth system to produce a golden generation – and what Australia can learn from it

This is the parochial attitude that JD Kiwi can’t shake. Being a New Zealander, he doesn’t understand the need that to be truly successful, professional sport needs to be tribal and passionate in nature, or at least a very highly competitive nature with it’s participating franchises through mechanisms of drafting or/and trading of players, and general open recruitment, as NZ has never organically created a proper professional sporting competition, and also the fact they have a high cultural and economic reliance on Australia to provide these opportunities.
Rugby union had a parochial anti-professionalism attitude, and thus was bizarrely very late to adopting professionalism (1990’s!). The systems they use now in many countries are mainly amateur style development leagues, such as SR/SRP, which pay professional wages, but don’t actually build the tribalism, passion and fanbase to sustain the lucrative wages they need to pay. Australia & Italy are large economies, like England, France, Japan, etc, who need a properly run dynamic professional league to be visible and help grow the sport at the grassroots.

This amateur era player development model as a professional model only works in some countries, such as NZ & Ireland, where they have little professional sporting competition for the sport, and a heavy cultural reliance on a neighbouring country (NZ with Australia, Ireland with Britain) to provide professional sporting opportunities.

Ironic, because the Gabba losses have been late in the season: middle of January, NOT November/early December. So the logic would surely be to prefer opening at the Gabba, no??

Australian cricket 2024-25 schedule CONFIRMED: Perth usurps Gabba 'fortress' for opening Test against India

Just shows how arrogant and disrespectful the AFL is. The Tas government spent millions supporting two struggling Melbourne clubs, and the AFL kept carting WA teams over, rather than have regular Victorian opponents for Haw & NM, which would’ve seen huge tourist numbers from Vic come in! 👎

“Charity”?! 😡 The Tasmanian government literally paid to host those AFL games! The same ones where the AFL NEVER objected to Bellerive as a venue!
