So when you are found to be wrong, the person who calls you out is being picky???

You can’t have it both ways Sheek

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

“How many players today can beat a man with a subtle change of direction or pace, without trying to run over the top of the guy?”

Sorry Sheek, you know I usually agree with your well thought through analysis, but on this topic we’re off…

JOC, for one, would be a pime example of a guy who can beat his man through a change of direction or pace

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

sorry Sheek, he has not done that.

Backs coach is not a head coach, so i would argue he has not done that…How much input did he have in selection etc at the Sharks???

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

Think your comment re Larkham getting the coaching gig is utter nonsense, Spiro.

Regardless of who his father was, Bernie was not only considered one of the best #10’s we’ve EVER had, but was a also a good thinker of the game.

Campo himself admits he didn’t know exactly what his feet were going to do!

I know which of these 2 I’d rather have coaching me.

This is in no way an attempt to denigrate the unbelievable play that Campo used to deliver, he was without doubt our best winger of all time…But to suggest he should therefore be coaching at a high level is just silly.

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

exactly!

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

I was told I spent too much time in the playmaking role for a guy with #7 on his back!!!

Seems funny to be talking about the Tahs not having the cash to keep KB, so I reckon it was more than just that…KB was poached early on by the Tahs don’t forget, so perhaps he was just stale and saw M Foley as being a “more of the same” kinda coach

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Justin,

I don’t consider it laughable at all…you are comparing a 19 yo KB playing at #10 with a 23yo KB who has played the last few years at #15.
My point is, the Tahs didn’t have a quality #12 next to him when he was at flyhalf, I think Barnes would solve that issue (much the same as I think Harris will end up next to Cooper)

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Sheek, I’ve been pretty consistant with my argument on this point lately on the Roar…I’m always in favour of honest and (if necessary), brutal comment on the game…But that goes both ways.

I just find the constant negativity from Campo and (to a lesser extent), Lordy a bit much sometimes, and can only assume it’s being done for inflammatory purposes.

Thoughts?

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

He’s been down on Australian rugby since about 1996…

Couldn’t agree more…although must say todays article is a LOT better than the negative stuff he’s been sprouting on the Roar over the last few weeks.

For mine though, he could’ve mentioned Sarel Pretorius, who has been outstanding IMHO

CAMPO: Players who make rugby exciting to watch

Kingplaymaker, with a name like that…we might need you in the #10!!

Seriously though, I agree the Tahs should never have let KB go. Given the way the Reds won the comp (around an X factor type #10), surely if we’d just persevered with him at 10 and Barnes at 12…well, that’s a combo worth using…oh well, I’ll just hope that B Foley steps into 10 sometime soon (with barnes next to him)…he might be the answer…we’ll see

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Mania, the answer to the tahs woes is pretty obvious to all and sundry…until they develop/buy a world class #10 they will never win the title

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

“they never have in the past”…umm, Mania I think you need to take a look at the finals results over the last 5 or so years…

I’d rather my team lost 2 cup finals in 3 years than never having made them in the first place.

A bit of tinkering is all that is needed, and some returning top shelf guys (Mitchell, Palu and Elsom)..oh, and no injuries!!

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Until the Tahs start (and stick) with Barnes at 10 I don’t see the season going anywhere other than mid table.

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Funnily enough, as a non Tom Carter fan I actually would’ve liked to have seen him at inside on sat night. His direct (yes, one dimensional) play may’ve been exactly what was required…and I still think he could be used in a horses for courses approach this year (like against SBW to shut him down). Ok, sure you are losing out in the attack side but I see some upside to using him on occasion.

Will the Waratahs make positive or negative changes?

Iagree with your assesment of the changes required…I’m not too worried about the forwards, but agree Timani for Mumm is a no brainer. Injuries in the 8 though could really ruin this season.

Agree that the best backline combo would be:

Pretorius
Barnes
Kingston
Horne
AAC
BKH
Foley

Spot on Murray…it looks to me like some (not all), of the players in the Oz conference are somehow just treading water until the bigger matches (ie S finals and Wallabies) come up. (I note the pic in the Herald today of Elsom, up very high taking a lineout at training yesterday – But yet of course he’s still injured and can’t play this w/e….hmmmm)…This sort of ho hum approach to Super rugby is only serving to put off fans like myself.

To present a balanced comment though, for every Elsom there’s a Pocock or Tatafu, guys who continually put their bodies on the line for the team & have come (mentally tough), to play. It’s these guys I like to watch play the game, they’re the true legends of the game.

MEXTED: Coaches need to instill mental toughness as first priority

Sailosi, pretty sure I read last week that Pakalani is injured. No idea for how long.

Funnily enough, Carter might actually have been a good fit for this particular game. And trust me, that was hard to write!!

Carter benched for Barnes return to Tahs

Spot on, Clyde…Refreshing to hear an ex pro talking like this. It’s why many of us, shall we say, not so talented players continued to play years after our wives, parents and body told us not too!!

The memories that you gain from playing the game over many years will last a lifetime!

RATHBONE: Dear Rugby, thanks for all the memories

“The entry point of such an offence is 12 weeks but credit was given to Byrnes for his otherwise unblemished record.”

Ummmm…how has this point been missed?

Easily the grubbiest of all Aussie players (including Carter)…I am absolutely gobsmacked he has an “unblemished record”

Rebels' Adam Byrnes banned for 10 weeks

Hahaha maybe, KPM, maybe…

And whilst I’m clearly a fan of his (what I would call), “reasoned” bull at a gate approach, and understand why he canned it, I would like to see a semi pro level of rugby below Super 15. I think it’s the only way to move forward. But, of course it’s been tried before and the economics of it failed…Don’t mean to open that can of worms on the Roar again, it’s been flogged to death, just my opinion is all.

Australia's O'Neill joins RWC15 board

I actually welcome this appointment, and wouldn’t be too upset if it resulted in him heading up the IRB at some stage. You can’t argue the fact the guy has the kahunas to go toe to toe with anyone who gets in the way of his (the ARU’s) current plans. Does he have a huge ego, of course he does – But I would argue that’s a good thing as long as it’s kept in some kind of check.

Rickety,

I always look forward to your updates re the central coast schoolboy/girl comps, keep em coming!!!

Great to know that, with guys like yourself doing the hard yards off the field the kids on the CC have an outlet in Rugby. Well done!

Cheers
Mike

The more Super Rugby changes, the more it stays the same

Depends what you think are the key attributes an openside has.

For mine, the openside has to be tough in the contact (get low to ground & able to pilfer at any time), be supremely fit, have excelent vision (and be able to predict what’s next)…But also he/she has to be a link between the backs and forwards. So, pretty easy then!!!

I think it’s without doubt the best position on the field and (prior to becomming old and unfit), enjoyed playing there immensely.

Given all this, I agree with you on your top 3, but surely Brussow isn’t far away?? he is outstanding

Oh no! Waratahs kick the Reds out of jail

Yeah I’d like to see that too, Justin…indeed one of the rugby journo’s predicted by seasons end that would be the combo

Oh no! Waratahs kick the Reds out of jail

0/2 to start the tipping year. Great!!
