As NZ were actually playing a test at the time he passed and it was a massive tragedy for cricket in general (not just in Australia) it makes sense they were emotional.

Australia was not playing international cricket on November 27th and the Border-Gavaskar series that was due to start a week after he died on December 4th was delayed until the 9th. There was a 2 day tour match in Glenelg between an Australian Invitational XI and India, Hughes was struck part way through the second day (Nov 25th) and died later on the 27th.

At that first match in Adelaide there was copious tributes and reminders to Hughes throughout the entire test. His test cap number was painted onto the playing surface and the Australians celebrated wickets and centuries by running over to it. Warner was visibly emotional when he got 63, and then his century. Other players likewise for different match milestones. Two weeks before that test, Hughes was alive playing Shield. In the following two weeks Clarke was a pallbearer at his best mate’s funeral and gave a televised eulogy, then led the team onto the field for that match. Some players in the XI of that test were on the field when Hughes was struck.

All of that to say – what are you talking about? Visibly upset? Did you want them to pour out emotion as if it was the 27th of November and they’d just announced he’d died?
