Odds on it’s Quade. I hope he’s coaching more deception than this.

McKenzie keen to keep New Zealand guessing

Some great continuity play in there. Shame it wasn’t all scrum footage ;).

McKenzie names 30-man Wallabies squad, with surprises

On that basis, we should get that Deans bloke. He’s won heaps of Super Rugby in the past. I understand he’s looking for gig…

Lack of Plan B for Brumbies shows Ewen was right choice

Can’t agree on Faingaa, his set piece is ordinary, although he does stay conscious, which is a start. As for calling up someone that Faingaa keeps on the bench…

However, I can’t think of anyone consistently better. Tessman had a couple of great games for the force, Ulugia started to reach ‘acceptable’. Better hope nothing happens to Moore.

Polota-Nau, Kimlin out with injury, Anae called into Wallabies

So, play what’s in front of you.

The thing is, the philosophy of attacking rugby is pretty simple. You’re going to see almost any NZ or AU national coach say the same thing.

Basically what he’s saying is that we aren’t going to see a radically different game plan. With any luck, the execution will be better. I’m betting the side looks a lot like the 2011 Wallabies.

McKenzie urging Wallabies to have a go

I think the validity of the argument is largely undermined by the senior coaches in Australia saying that the travel isn’t a big deal any more. McKenzie and White said it’s not a problem or that it’s just a mindset thing. Assuming they weren’t playing games, which is only a really safe assumption for McKenzie, then I’m not sure what the argument is about.

Yes, the Brumbies got tired, but I think it’s fair to say they would have been tired if they’d beaten the Bulls at home last week rather than in Pretoria. White didn’t trust his bench, and his team got cut open. White’s done a good job with a bunch of “unknowns”, but if they are so unknown they don’t get a run, White clearly has some work to before he get a champion team together. He has acknowledged this and says he’s on a 4 year plan. Maybe next year’s Brumbies will put the Reds away and not draw games against wooden spooners. Maybe they’ll be able to play two high intensity finals in a row without getting tired.

Maybe that’s what is required to win.

I like that the Super comp is really really hard to win. You have to be extremely consistent or you have a rough time of it. Every team lost/drew games they should have won and can only blame themselves for not having more log points at the end of the regular season. Well, at least every team in the top 6 at least.

Time to adjust the Super Rugby final

The chiefs defence shut down the brumbies attack completely (toomua was basically absent). The chiefs game plan was superior: run the brumbies around for an hour and then punch through the tired forwards in the middle.

A salute to the Chiefs master coach Dave Rennie

Especially for his ability to deliver an anaemic attack. That worked really well last night.

So Muggleton is suggestion going wide before forward? Good thing he’s a defensive coach.

How Chiefs can win the Super Rugby final

Tahs. Now that Carters gone we need a committed team man.

Where to for Ma'a Nonu?

Actually Ranger does agree. He’s tried and failed to get out of his contract in France.

McCaw returns in All Blacks training squad

Read vs Mowen would be good to watch.

McKenzie's 40-man Wallabies squad announced for the Rugby Championship

I understand Harris. Lealiifano is the primary kicker, Cooper is backup. Mogg and White are good at distance but not quite accurate enough. In the event that something happens to Cooper or Lealiifano that stops him from playing a few games, the larger squad needs to have a good kicker to sit on the bench.

This also applies if Cooper doesn’t make the squad, however unlikely that might be.

Front row selections could be interesting, especially with the new scrum interpretations. Which hooker can actually hook?

If any single player is “needed” by Australian Rugby then it’s in more trouble than I thought. If Australian Rugby can afford to discard talent rather than try to maximize it’s potential then it would have been winning something recently.

OConnor needs to pick a position (or someone picks it for him) and develop a strong game there, and that might mean a spell away from the Wallabies while he does that, or proves that he can’t.

Cooper had similar off field problems which now seem to have resolved so he can concentrate on his game. Hopefully O’Connor (and Beale) can find environments where this can happen so we can see whether they can reach their potential. These guys are young and Australian Rugby doesn’t have the talent to waste.

Does rugby union need James O'Connor?

Beale shouldn’t be selected until he’s gone the entire super season without a screw up. Hopefully Cheika can get him back into shape. If this years preseason is anything to go by, Beale will be kept very busy if he goes to the Tahs.

To Beale or not to Beale, that is the question

If they’d have him, Counties might be a good choice for Cooper.

Crusaders tear Reds a new one

OConnor needs at least a couple of years work. I don’t think many people will be happy with a mediocre team until then.

McKenzie probably has about one season to markedly change results and/or style before people really start moaning. He needs to do something of the magnitude of what Cheika is doing at NSW, maybe not the same style of play, but a radical change from before.

Crusaders tear Reds a new one

And Peter Betham played for Tasman last season.

I like this idea!

Crusaders tear Reds a new one

I haven’t heard that and can’t see any evidence of anything beyond the ‘pre-binding’ change. The IRB made some blather about being stricter on the scrum, but that looks to be focussed on feeding straight.

I watched the game today for the first time, and recall only one instance where the Brumbies scrum was stationary with the ball held at Mowen’s feet for about 3 seconds. Didn’t bother me any. I’ve no idea why Spiro finds demolishing scrums for penalties so objectionable. You don’t need to be more than competent for the level you’re playing at to avoid it. The Wallabies did it for years with Bill Young: a “weak” scrum that somehow managed to avoid getting totally demolished. They just need to get a bit smarter about it and the problem will disappear.

SPIRO: Brumbies roll on into the finals, the Reds get rolled

Probably fair to say they are factors. Factors that aren’t sufficient to excuse the outcome, but factors none the less.

Crusaders tear Reds a new one

McKenzie would. He said he was happy with Cooper’s performance. Sounds just like Deans after BIL#2?

SPIRO: Brumbies roll on into the finals, the Reds get rolled

There is, if the scrum never moves or scrum moves and then stops again. From rule 20.4:
(e)
When a scrum remains stationary and the ball does not emerge immediately a further scrum is ordered at the place of the stoppage. The ball is thrown in by the team not in possession at the time of the stoppage.
(f)
When a scrum becomes stationary and does not start moving immediately, the ball must emerge immediately. If it does not a further scrum will be ordered. The ball is thrown in by the team not in possession at the time of the stoppage.

The question is where a front row under pressure counts as stationary. Most of the time, I would think not.

SPIRO: Brumbies roll on into the finals, the Reds get rolled

I don’t recall Hadlee cracking under the pressure. Quade on the other hand…

Oooo. Controversy. McKenzie needs 2 years to rebuild, but I agree there’s going to be a lot of egg on faces if the wallabies don’t win Anything this year.
