I'm an American with a deep passion for footy who first fell in love with Aussie Rules Football back when it was the VFL and the likes of Dermott Brereton and Gary Ablett Sr. roved the grounds in the 80's. Until a few years ago I didn't actually barrack for any one team, I simply enjoyed watching footy being played well. I had my sentimental favorites, (I still do) and some teams and players I dislike BUT I finally came to realize that Hawthorn plays the game the way I enjoy seeing it be played with the attitude I appreciate in the athletes I barrack for. I was sure they were going to beat Sydney in '12 and was poleaxed when they fell short but it's been a pretty good ride in any case... GO HAWKS!!!

I don’t know that I would characterize Rioli’s 2016 as down to one good game. He leads the Hawks in goals. He’s seventh on the Coleman medal list That didn’t happen in a vacuum. He’s ALSO been very accurate kicking 12 goals 3, (tied for least minor scores of the top 12) I agree with you about Lewis and Langford neither has been as sparklingly brilliant so far this year though neither have they been horrible and Langford has been good in scrums. My eye opener for 2016 is James Sicily, he’s second for goals scored for the Hawks with 10 and near as accurate as Rioli with only 4 behinds! Not only that but he has the softest hands and takes the ball above his head at his highest reach. I know the sample size is small, but he is a super player in the making. His best attribute is reading the ball in flight, a few times he saw the flight of the sherrin far better than much more experienced players.

Hawthorn v Adelaide: Friday Night Forecast

It truly was one of the fastest paced games I have ever seen, most action packed, so few mistakes either way. So few stoppages compared to most matches. Thoroughly enjoyed the outcome wasn’t sure they were going to get over the line on this one. Well done Adelaide, good on you.

Puopolo shines in Hawks' escape over Crows

Yeah, and can you believe that some people were calling for Sam to retire after the GF win? I was stunned at their reasoning “make way for the young guys” I never heard such rubbish, Sam Mitchell is one of the big reasons the Hawks have been so dominant these last few years. I can’t count how many times I have heard variations on the theme of commentators saying “If there is one Hawthorn player I would put a tagger on it’s Mitchell,” He not only has more Brownlow votes in his career than any player that has never won a Brownlow Medal (and is fourth all-time in that category) BUT he has more career Browlow votes than over 40 Brownlow Medalists! The last couple of years he has AVERAGED 30 disposals, he’s averaging better than that so far this year and against St Kilda he hit career highs in handballs with 31 AND a personal best 44 disposals! His career disposal average of over 26 per game keeps rising year on year!

Well, seriously, I see midriff punches all the time by most every team or at least certain members of said teams. Seems like it’s a part of the game even if it shouldn’t be. How’s that 18 point Crow’s lead feel about now?

Seems to me it was in 2010 that Dennis Cometti announced on air that according to some in depth research the team first to 100 points wins over 99% of footy games. That statistic stuck with me. Since Cometti said that, I have watched probably well over 400 AFL matches, and I promise, as scores near the 100 point mark I have watched the scores closely in those games. April 22, 2016 Hawthorn Hawks vs Adelaide Crows marks the first game I have seen since hearing that stat where the first team to 100 did not win! Amazing!

I think that Sam Mitchell may (or may not) wish he’d slagged Essendon a bit less noticeably in the middle of a hotly contested match, considering the furor his gesture has created. On the other hand, I’m completely with you, at the time I thought nothing of it, that Essendon’s players seemed a bit chagrined as a result actually appeared to indicate their complicity in the whole “performance enhancment” episode. James Hird sure has a short memory, doesn’t he? To be brutally honest, if that whole scandal had occurred in one of the major US sports leagues Hird would still be in exile perhaps forever, with no one paying attention to him, maybe tending roses in his garden instead of foolishly tweeking that he hates (Hawthorn) most of all. Giving the Hawks extra incentive to beat the Bombers, yeah, that was smart!

Reaction to Sam Mitchell's banter is an embarassment

While I agree that players that duck the head should not be rewarded, I feel that some players getting high contact calls are doing it artfully enough that it would be hard on umpires to be asked to discern intent. However, I MIGHT like to see a rule that bans the “Selwood move” (my term) where the player in question raises the opponents arm with his own to CREATE high contact, I see instituting that rule as eliminating a fair chunk of undeserved high contact calls… it’s an obvious action and would be easy to eliminate from the game. As for Puopolo’s “lean” I feel a lot less antagonized by that particular move because it takes a skilled player to carry it off, otherwise it’s simply a matter of the player going to ground… and as I mentioned before it would be very hard for the Umps to call
