DCE is definitely in better form at the moment.
Hunt’s weakness has always been his kicking game.
If I’m taking one to put on the bench its Hunt. DCE has never really done much coming off the bench for QLD or Aus. Hunt made big plays from the bench in the four nations and has covered hooker for the Broncos at the start of his career. I think he’s a better defender as well.

Agreed!!!

I think DCE was more reliant on Glenn Stewart then Jamie Lyon. Stewart was the main ball player on the right hand side. DCE’s best plays always came from hitting holes off Stewart’s perfectly timed passes.

I hope there is a real one sided scoreline in the first game. Not too bothered in which direction. Just want some fresh blood to be thrown out on to the field by both sides.

I wouldn’t say Moylan isn’t tough enough, he always turns up but can be dominated physically and I don’t think his defensive positioning is that good.
I’ve seen plenty of times when he is swatted away defending the tryline, which almost never happens to Dugan, there’s a physicality to Dugan that Moylan can’t match.. No doubt he’s a great footballer though. We wont actually no if Moylan is up to it until he is given a chance and he will eventually.
I’ve never been Dugan’s biggest fan, he has plenty of flaws, never passes the ball for a start, But everytime he has worn the blue jersey he has turned up and performed, that is all you can ask.
His performance against Souths on MNF sealed his spot for me.

Sorting NSW's halves debacle and picking the right team

I understand your point Squid.
I respect them all but its time to move on, I can understanding holding on to them if they were in form and dominating opponents at NRL level. They’re not though, its not 2007-2012 anymore.
Luke Lewis (one of my all time favourites) hasn’t been the same since his injury at the world cup 2013.
Greg Bird, well I’ve never rated him too highly
Paul Gallen, too injury prone, though does perform when on the park.
Beau Scott, what is he offering? In 2010 he was a real handful running lines for the Dragons and protecting Jamie Soward but I honestly think he’s past it.
Anthony Watmough, has proved over the last couple of seasons he is past it.
Its time to move on.

"I've had a good run": Watmough concedes Origin career is over

I’m not a big fan of stats, they can be manipulated either way. I just think Hodkinson is a better defender. I don’t say Reynolds isn’t a good defender. He is a certainly a better player than Hodkinson in my opinion.

Thurston is great, it just seems he gets all the praise whether he deserves it or not (he usually does deserve it)
I think its the laziness of most of the ‘EXPERTS?’ who cover our game on TV, Radio and in the newspapers. I often wonder if they’re watching different games to me.

I think Cowboys will be there at the end of the year if the pack keeps turning up. Taumololo is just scary, Lowe and Cooper defend well and run good lines and options. Scott and Tamou working away in the middle.

Only thing that would concern me would be the long kicking game (Thurston’s only weakness IMO) and maybe having no real standout centre who Thurston or Morgan can just throw an early ball to and let him go to work.

The Roar's Maroons team for State of Origin 1 2015

Morgan has been brilliant.
Just wondered Cowboy, assuming you’re a Cowboys fan, Do you think Thurston gets too much credit when the Cowboys are going good. It seems to me he always get the praise when they win, even if Morgan, Taumololo, Cooper or others have been better.
For example Morgan ripped Canterbury up but Thurston is the man getting the headlines for the field goal at the end.
He seems to get all the Dally M points as well, am I right or wrong?

The Roar's Maroons team for State of Origin 1 2015

I agree with Phil Gould, the time has come for NSW to say goodbye to Gallen, Bird, Scott, Lewis and Watmough. Rebuild that forward pack.
There’s plenty of options. Cordner, Jackson, Finucane, Fensom, Sironen, Frizell, Thompson, Moeroa, T Sims, Vaughan, James.
Be bold, stop wheeling the same old blokes out there.

"I've had a good run": Watmough concedes Origin career is over

I’d have Ben Hunt as the bench utility ahead of DCE. Played that role for the Broncos at the start of his career and would be comfortable at 9 if Smith was to go down during the game.
Look at how good he was for the Kangaroos in that same role against England and New Zealand

The Roar's Maroons team for State of Origin 1 2015

I think Moylan is a much better ‘footballer’ in terms of skill but there’s more to it than just skills. There’s a toughness in Dugan that is rare, not just bringing the ball back but defensively and a general mentality.
Moylan is a great young player but I find the Lockyer comparisons a little annoying, I remember young Lockyer (the fullback) being a special athlete as well as footballer. Lockyer is one of the all time greats of rugby league, Moylan has had a couple of good seasons. I rate him really highly but lets not go overboard on him.

Sorting NSW's halves debacle and picking the right team

I definitely agree on Adam Reynolds and the quality of his kicking game. I don’t think he’s a better defender than Hodkinson though. Hodkinson’s defence, particularly on kick chase, is top notch.

Daley set to stick by Trent Hodkinson

Copley is only 23, I’m sure he’ll play for Queensland eventually even if its only once.
He’s really improved over the last couple of years.
I think there’s a chance Richards might end up on a wing for NSW this year.

The best of the rest: The NRL's Unrepresentative Team

Haha, I was thinking NSW, QLD and then everywhere else. In hindsight it was definitely a mistake.

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

I think Melbourne have been really good 1-17. If you’re including Cronk and Smith, who haven’t been as good by their standards, then you have to include Blake Green and Tohu Harris as well.

Overall I think we’ve mostly picked the same players.

I forgot Uate, could probably include Vatuvei and Granville as well.

NRL first-term report: How is your team going? (Part 1)

Just wondered, You’re username would imply you’re from Melbourne, could you see a day when a second Melbourne team is competing in the NRL?

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

I think that it is essential to have a 2nd team in Brisbane but if you’re correct and they’re not offering a point of difference then they shouldn’t be accepted. Ideally you’d want in to be like AFL in Adelaide, separate identities and separate fan bases. I know next to nothing about AFL so hopefully I’ve got that right.

If the WARL hasn’t included the local league community in the bid then they are complete idiots.

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

The biggest problem with conventional promotion and relegation in English Rugby League was the team that got promoted already had one hand tied behind its back going in to the next season. The tier below Super League was not fulltime professional and the only players they could sign were Aussie and Kiwi Journeymen and players from the relegated side.

Promotion and relegation has just been reapproved after the failure of the licensing system, but it isn’t conventional, it will be played out via a play off system which is pretty confusing.

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

So in theory we would need 32 fulltime professional clubs each year

Is the bottom of the second division the absolute floor for clubs or will there be promotion and relegation to and from the amateur scene?

If that is the case the whole Rugby League system in Australia would need to revamped, no more feeder clubs etc.

Its good to speculate on these matters.

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

I’ve not looked in to the Bombers and West Coast bids too much, how are they a joke? No financial backing?

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

English Soccer has 92 professional clubs that have moved up and down the divisions for over 100 years.
It would be really hard to establish promotion and relegation in Australian Rugby League and to also get clubs on a stable financial footing.

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

If we’re going to do divisions, we need 20 team comp

Souths, Roosters, Manly, Dragons, Sharks
Bulldogs, Parra, Tigers, Panthers, Knights
Broncos, Titans, Cowboys, Brisbane 2 (Expansion), CQ (Expansion)
Storm, Warriors, Perth (Expansion), Canberra, New Zealand 2 (Expansion)

Change in the NRL is essential for the future

Just wondered, has Hurrell declared alliegance to New Zealand or Tonga?

I think Kenny Dowall will get the nod myself. Kearney seems to be a big fan. He wouldn’t be anywhere near my side though
