A few points I’d like to make (I will declare now that I am a Melbourne Rebels member and was at the game last night).

– The AFL game was not ‘across the road at the G’ but at Docklands Statium the other side of the city
– AAMI park drew a capacity crowd, I was also at the Lions test in 2013 at Docklands stadium which also drew a capacity crowd at that venue. If the England game was held there last night I couldn’t see any reason why the crowd would be any less than the Lions test.
– Melbourne Rebels regularly attract a crowd in similar size to Melbourne Storm. Would you imply that Melbourne should not have an NRL side either?
– I agree with one other poster the media’s attitude to Rugby in Melbourne is shocking to say the least. For example the Herald Sun back pages are filled with AFL propaganda, with usually a foot note about the latest or upcoming Rebels game somewhere about a dozen pages in.

The ARU is flogging a dead horse by taking Tests to Melbourne

I’d also add Rod Kafer to the mix. Whenever he pipes up with his ‘special comments’ or whatever they are presented as, my mute button gets a good workout.

Ten things I learned from Saturday's rugby action

If you go to the bottom of the page and look at subscription TV ratings, the Rugby test match is the top rated. Add this to the FTA rating compared to the AFL and the Rugby figure comes out 5,000 viewers ahead.

England niggle and win, but Australia are not done

I used to have a chuckle at the name of the QPR player ‘Fitz Hall’. Apparently his nickname in the dressing room was ‘One Size’.

“we really put the burners on the Poms late in the game”

Errr, there were Fijians on the opposition team as well as yours 😛

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over Fiji

Not sure if you watched on Foxtel but the bias of the Australian TV commentary was sickening. Last Friday they were cheering on the Fijians every time they touched the ball, and complaining about England being offside every time they were defending. Last nights game Fiji were supposed to be easy beats coming off a short turn around according to the same commentators, and they were very quiet about the number of times that their players were offside. The sooner this Aussie side goes out the tournament the better, then I might be able to watch with some unbiased commentators.

Wallabies beat Fiji but don't get bonus point in World Cup opener

This excuse making about ‘being rusty’ from the author of an article about how unimpressive England were!!!

Pocock leads the Wallabies to a 28-13 win over Fiji

There used to be a Georgian guy who had a website called Lelostream ,that would stream a lot of videos of Georgian Rugby matches ads well as other European rugby. I used to watch it quite a bit and was impressed by the physicality in most of the games. Unfortunately he had to take the content offline due to copyright issues and we’ve been starved of Georgian style rugby until their appearance this world cup.

Spot on Chaz, I agree with every one of your statements.

Australia has their own ‘hype master’ David Campese who likes to spout off nonsense in the media. The public take his comments about as seriously as Sir Clive’s.

The Australian press is just as bad as the UK regarding a fair approach to things. Who doesn’t remember the witch hunt lead by (but not the only culprits) the Brisbane Courier Mail about Stuart Broad during the last ashes series out here?

SPIRO: The UK media are already trying to undermine the opposition

I had a bit of trouble editing my comment, so I’ll just add as a reply:

The teams I’d like to see most advance from each pool are:

A/ England
B/ Samoa
C/ Tonga
D/ Coin flip Romania or Canada

We love you England - but go Fiji!

Speaking as an English rugby supporter, the teams I’d least like to see advance from each group are:

A/ Australia
B/ South Africe
C/ Argentina
D/ France

We love you England - but go Fiji!

I rate Martin Castrogiovanni up there with Parisse as Italy’s best players.

Rugby World Cup pool previews: Pool D

I would say in general you are correct. Not just with Rugby, for example a few of my pals rave on about the Australian men’s soccer team being XX in world rankings and getting excited about playing some team 30 or 40 places higher. I personally don’t take much notice of world rankings in any professional team sport.

The Hangout: Will the real second rugby nation please stand up?

I would not say Web-Ellis himself was a fraud, as I understand it the tale of him picking the ball up during the football game was perpetuated by another former Rugby student some years after W.W-E’s death.

William Webb Ellis - pioneer or fraud?

Interesting predictions, I would love it for Tonga to also get past the pool stages. Their pack may be ageing, but with a player like Soane Tonga-uiha at loosehead, he’s one of my favourite forwards to watch.

You lost me at the semi’s though. World Cup history shows they have always been 50% NH vs SH except only in 1999 when it was 75%-25%.

Tyneside Geordies follow league?? Not heard this one before. Didn’t a certain Mr. J Wilkinson spend most of his career at Newcastle Rugby Club 😉

George North – Harlequins winger? Even more shocking he’s only #38 on the list. He’d be knocking on the door of any world best squad.

Rugby's Top 100: 40-31

I’m surprised there is no room for Tom Wood in the top 100. He has been immense for England’s back row the last few years.
