The RnR is part of package that keeps the players in NZ. Agree it devalues the product, but it would be further devalued if those players are no longer playing in SRP.

'It's time we grew up': The jarring hypocrisy that proves All Blacks are getting key call all wrong

Clear line of sight and no sudden change in height/direction – that’s what the framework says, not bent hips/legs. There is always some sort of dip in most tackles, especially in the forwards as they brace for impact so that is not considered mitigation when clear line of sight and no sudden change in height/direction. Note that the ball carrier was looking up to the tackler not ducking his head into contact.

Anyway, it seems the onus is always on the tackler to get it right. Get it wrong – risk card and head injury to ball carrier/tackler, or risk head injury to tackler by going low.

All these cards debate etc. is always about the tackler, I don’t know how much holistic thinking is going on with regards to making the game safer overall. So many aspects of the game can be reviewed/changed -but that may change the fabric of the game. Need some smart rugby people involved. I think its all in the ‘too hard basket’ for WR.

The Wrap: Reds light up Melbourne, while it's lights out for TV over Lienert-Brown concussion

Yellow card if clear and obvious, followed by strict post match citing process to ensure all head contacts are reviewed, players suspended and teams fined.
They can also change to nipple height law. Players are coached to tackle high so they can wrap and prevent offloads. The nipple height would make most up right tackles illegal, head contact or not, makes it easier to adjudicate the game but also reducing the risk of head injury in tackles. Plus more offloads as a bonus.
The Sef case is a tackle gone wrong. The onus is on tackler to get lower, we see it often especially in the NH the chop tackle that happens very low.
I’m sure some solutions lie within NFL that could be incorporated in rugby, they the most professional contact sport with a history or head injury issues.

Tupou won't shy away from hurting ex-teammates in first clash against old team, Reds prop cops surprising four-match ban

Question is how much money will be lost is reduced to 5 games per week?
The breakfast timeslot is decent when compared to the 10pm AEDT, midnight NZT Western Force games.

Two new teams and a big show of faith to two more - how Super Rugby must kick on from a thrilling start to 2024

The defender wasn’t low, whilst not upright either, angled upwards. The ball carrier came in at the same angle and the heads clashed, they both angled upwards. There wasn’t sudden ducking motion that you are suggesting, (refer to Connor Vest incident last year, ducking below horizontal)
We have been told the last few years that all head to head clashes start at red card threshold then mitigation if any is applied. That’s the framework. So my question, has the framework changed?
Onus is always on the defender to adjust unless it’s sudden and significant, which in this case wasn’t when compared against many cards dishes out in the last few years.

The Wrap: The two massive power shifts shaping Australian and New Zealand rugby

Good wrap G!
From last couple of years, in order to scrape into the 8th position you only need about 5 wins and 5 bonus points, I think the Crusaders can manage better than that as the season progresses. But there is more pain on the horizon, their next game is against the Canes after a 6 day turn around, Crusaders will have longer travel and coming from a completely different climate to negotiate, but atleast they will be home. The next 2 after that are Blues then Chiefs, followed by bye. On current form they could be 0-6! The 2nd half of their season is slightly easier, they will be hoping for some cohesion and returning players making an impact.

The Wrap: The two massive power shifts shaping Australian and New Zealand rugby

The incident met the red card threshold, dipping in the past counted as mitigation therefore dropping it down to yellow card. Is there new head contact laws the SRP is trialling?

The Wrap: The two massive power shifts shaping Australian and New Zealand rugby

Connor Vest broke his neck against the Highlanders not the Chiefs so no Finau doesn’t have record like that…no point reading the rest of the post.

'Over the moon': Reds deny Chiefs for 23 PHASES to win 'titanic' trans-Tasman clash as Kiss' revolution continues

Imagine if they snuck in at 8th position and won the competition from there….

The Crusaders dynasty looks dead - so how will it impact the All Blacks?

Thoroughly enjoyed the rugby. Not sure if a super round is required or not, given the season is short enough compared NRL/AFL. I’m sure the Vic gov deal made it worthwhile regardless of crowd numbers for those teams who gave up a home match, but going forward I’m not sure if other cities/states will fork out.

The other thing that concerns me is the high/late shots. We saw 2 red cards but I think a lot was let go by the refs and TMO.
I get that there is directive to speed up the game in SRP but this leads to inconsistencies with the international game as to what is accepted or not. From an NZ point of view, they’ve lost Lions tour, Irish test series and RWC final due to red cards.

The Wrap: ‘World’s best provincial rugby competition’ delivers a superb Super Round

They threw them in last year against the Drua and got burnt. They meet again this coming weekend, this time those players are not the 2nd stringers.

The Wrap: ‘World’s best provincial rugby competition’ delivers a superb Super Round

That was the perfect time and circumstances (covid etc) to reset. Note at the time it was only 4 teams, Force were already cut. They could have really consolidated, worked better with Twiggy, GRR should have be retained as another 2nd tier type of competition that works with the Asian market.
But chest beating was more important.

'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams

Hamish wanted 5 teams, Phil now says 3 teams yet Phil supports Hamish….

RA need to work out what is the optimal number of teams for the income they generate. I’m sure the broadcast revenue doesn’t follow the number of teams linearly.

'Our talent is spread too thin': Ex-Wallabies captain urges Rugby Australia to cut Super teams

Stan contract was initially a 3 year contract, $30mil per year, with option of 2 more years. Stan taken taken up that 2 year extension option, this means the lions tour is included. I haven’t seen any details whether the lions tour is at an increased broadcast offering, for RA sale it is…

What’s their academy policy?

Super Rugby teams: Marky clear for Crusaders clash, Blues rest two All Blacks after just ONE week, DMac to face Brumbies

It’s not really about increased broadcast revenue. It’s about sustaining what is the current broadcast revenue compared to going down 5 games a week and reduced broadcast revenue.

Western Sydney or any where else in Australia is not sustainable. RA are no position to fund another team given their own debt and taking over Waratahs debt – so RA. Any new Aussie team needs to stand on its own two feet- probably with a backer like Twiggy.

Argentina can be sustainable. They have an appetite for rugby. They seem to have good pathways just ready to take the next steps. Their 7s team is rock solid. They probably will not be as competitive as when they were last in the competition because Argentina won’t enforce the same selection policy as before. They will still be a solid team and in time will become better as long as they can keep hold of the talent they develop.

A Sunday morning match 9am AEST is not a bad timeslot for NZ/Aus, it’s much better than 3-4am. The only issue is travel.

'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over

I think Super Rugby at least from an Australian perspective needs some cross-town rivalries. NRL AFL is built up from cross town rivalries. A league, NBL, big bash the cross town matches attract more attention as well. Let the rebels die if there is no other option. I would even rebrand the NSW Waratahs to North Eastern Sydney Waratahs. Maybe start a new franchise in western Sydney and build some cross town rivalry. Cross town rivalry will force improvememts in Waratahs as well.

'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over

I accept super round in 2022 was a relatively low turnout, it was due to coming out of covid etc. etc.
2023 wasn’t much better and from the sounds of 2024 will not be better either. How many casual rugby fans know that SRP started last week let alone there is Super Round this week?

It’s disappointing though as the organisers nor NZR, RA seemed not have learnt any lessons from the last 2 years. They should look at better ways to market it, engage more fans. Maybe the money from Vic gov was too good to worry about attendances etc. but that’s just lazy and not very good optics.

Super Round is a celebration of rugby - that's why it should have never been held in Melbourne

It feels like the Rebels on-field problems are easy to fix but there is a lot of things fix.
It was an enjoyable first round.
I do have a problem with Super Round being 2nd round – marketing is already terrible, on top of that you don’t even allow the competition to market itself.

The Wrap: Opening round of SRP a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same

If AFL was so spectacular it would be more popular outside of VIC/SA/WA/Tas.
Melbourne Storm winning almost every week for the last 25 years is extraordinary enough yet it doesn’t get much coverage. A negative NRL story gets more coverage than a positive Storm story.

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

I think AFL and Vic media have a pact to just focus on 1 code over winter months. The main media are too busy covering the 10 odd AFL teams. Melb Storm and RL coverage is minimum, the Rebels almost zero (good or bad times).
So I don’t think it’s necessarily melbournians not embracing Rebels, they are effectively not allowed to.

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

I keep thinking about 2020 Aratipu report. I wonder where RA would be right now had they cut 1 more team to be down to 3 teams (noting that Force were already cut in 2017).
They fell into this idea of BIL and RWC will save everything.
Now it seems they will be lucky to break even by the end of 2027.

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

The commission cannot enforce free flow of players. Crusaders Blues and co won’t agree. What the commission should be doing pushing for minimum requirements for each club e.g. development pathways, academies etc. it’s gonna mean those clubs have to invest money (which they don’t have). Once minimum requirements are met then you can move on to drafts. Simply adding some kiwi players isn’t going to make the aussie teams significantly better.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

The FTA match starts of live but will stop in between for ads hence the games get delayed progressively. They expect 15min delay by the time the match finishes.
There will also be 1 NRL match FTA per week in similar fashion.

The Wrap: 'Curious and uncomfortable' move on the eve of SRP, and 12 players who will light up the comp in 2024

My guess is that the PAYG deduction that employers make wasn’t paid to the ATO.
Hence they probably only needed to pay back a fraction of their debt to ATO to keep operating without going into administration. Couple of weeks ago that was $500k.

Leaked document says RA out to 'destroy Super Rugby' and 'turn members against each other' as Rebels' pain comes to light
