Rebels have delivered on their promise of progress and really gave the chiefs a contest. It’s all very well for chiefs to say they weren’t at their best: rebels had half a team out with injury and they took the game away from the chiefs to the extent they could have taken a win. Aside from one red mist moment Canham ranked again for higher selection and I thought gibbon and talakai did very well.

'Always fighting, always Rebels': Chiefs hold on after late penalty in emotion-filled Melbourne send-off

NSW has the population, yet performance has been missing for a very long time. It has seemed to me for many years that the hierarchy and influences around NSW rugby must be the problem. It’s been noticeable since they were formed that the Brumbies do very well with NSW ‘rejects’. Lately, they’ve done really well also with Qld players, but I imagine that’s because over many years they have developed systems that are good for players and for the club.

COMMENT: Bizarre selection call that sums up chaos and disconnect at Super Rugby's biggest basket case

My starting point is that our pack has to be able to shift bodies in the collision space and perform at set pieces. I think on form Swain and Canham would be most effective, though Rodda and Neville also appeal. Williams seems about the right size and skills as a 6. LSL continues to be upright too often at collisions. He might be coached that way, but I think the low driving style of the top NZ sides is a big factor in their controlling game. Ponies and Reds are good in that area and Rebels are very good but lapse during games.

Super Rugby teams round 13: Frost to No.6, Noah back for Brumbies, Aubrey starts for Reds, Pone in for Rebels

He’s played well at test level and is terrific support for an inevitably young 10. I also love watching him with ikitau.

Kells, Wright, Donno, Jock or Kurtley? What Joe Schmidt's past tells us about the Wallaby fullback sweepstakes

Frost appeared to me to noticeably increase his effective collisions at last outing. Getting a bit lower and finding edges. He could be one a great bench option as lock or 6 backup. Right now I reckon swain/canham might be our best lock pair. But I really like Neville as well. Rodda and Ryan smith need a bit more time but will surely be in the mix. This ponies pack will be under the microscope.

I suppose that Herbert/Waugh might do that. Schmidt would be bonkers to accept it.

'He's ready': Campbell backs teammate for gold as fullback mounts own selection and contract extension case

I’m confident Kellaway will be 15. Wright and Campbell are in good form but not yet in the consistently constructive shape of Kellaway. I think k that makes Noah the initial 10. Foketi and ikitau in centres. The big question is the locks. I’m inclined to csnham and swain at this stage.

My only quibble is the Fosters man attribution. Does anyone think Cane selection lacked merit?

What most people will remember Sam Cane for - and what they should instead

Not sure rankings are the way to view Cane’s efforts. He skippered the ABs through a rough patch, with massive pressure from fans. And he did it with good grace and style. I can’t imagine that any fair observer doubts his skills, commitment and sheer bravery.

'I had my time': Cane stands down as All Blacks captain after signing new deal in Japan

Don’t be too comfortable CW. Sanders are a good side and Ponies have not been at their best.

The Wrap: Spare a thought for injured players as Super Rugby’s two rutting rhinos deliver an epic final preview

In fact Holloway made a very careful point of doing so.

Brumbies beat Waratahs in monsoonal conditions as injury toll goes from bad to worse

Reds weren’t ready for the rebels on the physical front. If they’d been able to maintain focus and energy for 80 the rebels would have won comfortably. The intensity of these games seems to make it hard for teams to play two really top level games in a row.

'Perhaps it's surgery': Reds win ugly over Rebels to keep top four hopes alive as big-name Wallabies forced off

add: the following quote from Tahs CEO in the Herald today has taken my breath away. “We probably have historically had a churn-and-burn culture, which is a bit unfortunate. I’d be the first to say that that’s something that we’re trying to rectify.”

Progress is slowly happening: What each of our Aussie Super Rugby teams must do to take the next step

not so Doc. I have seen macchiatos galore. Also: I’d like to go on record that IMO Force jerseys are not attractive. And: if the Shute Shield went national, Melbourne Uni would win.

I don’t know how you’d reach that judgment. Our problem for quite some time has been the base skills of WBs talent pool. Hard to know why it’s been such an issue, though I noted that a lot of our best results came when AIS was schooling rugby. My impression is that Thorn worked very hard to get the basics right and now Kiss is able to give players the breadth they need to use them. Ponies have been focused on core skills for years.

The five candidates for the Wallabies No.10 jersey - and the old heads who may sneak in to join them

I am wondering whether that’s a euphemism for All Red.

Five things: The Reds have flipped the script - and it promises to be rewarded at the Wallabies selection table

It’s the same picture Deans was faced with and he ended up with an amigo problem that saw all three drift away from Oz rugby in their best years. This group is in a better environment

I like the message it sends. Clearly he likes the club and RA/Reds have found a deal good enough to keep him without going overboard. Ponies and Reds are becoming the platforms for stabilising the Australian talent pool. Hopefully Force will move in that direction and – dare I say it the Tahs. Rebels have been on a good path but time looks like beating them.

Exclusive: Wallabies star turns down mega deal overseas to re-sign with Queensland Reds

Worth having a look. I thought the hooper-frost pairing was a problem. Didn’t help that slipper was injured early.

Harry, Valetini is the one guy who’s been solid through some crappy performances. Not wanting to be mean, but have a look at Harry’s test form and his still frequent howlers.

Have a look at the effect when one lock was replaced.

WBs will have few options in front row and I’d imagine will start with tried combos. Assuming Ponies props are first dibs, the young Reds bench pair is worth a look. But I’d start with the locks. Right now, I suspect Swain, Canham and Ryan Smith are the first choices. Neville backup for the scrum and then maybe Frost and Rodda as a pair. Valetini will be first in the back row and I imagine either Wright or Wilson gets 6 and McReight at 7. Leota, Rory Scott and Reimer will contest bench back row I reckon. All up, the pack should be solid and maybe even tough.

Five things: The Reds have flipped the script - and it promises to be rewarded at the Wallabies selection table

Ponies will have to recruit. Neville is the tight lock and Hooper is a poor pairing with frost as the weekend demonstrates. Swain is coming on well and will surely contest WBs spot.

'Toughest decision': Wallaby's blunt admission over form as Force land Brumbies lock, teammate brought to tears

It was cs. And so were the penalties. A lot of poor calls. Notably Tom Weight, who was a serial offender in the early part.

Brumbies breathe sigh of relief after holding on against physical Drua pack as super sub saves the day

Noticeable what happened when they put beef back into the locks. Playing hooper and frost together was a risk.
