I’d say Gordon is the choice right now. We have seen the 10s with both dominant and losing packs and Gordon is the one who comes out well with both. Noah had his chance last night to demonstrate grace under pressure and he didn’t. I don’t believe Donaldson is any more reliable at the test level.

Bernie summed it up for me. Too much tackling was upright, which is a gift to powerful players. That said, canes and Blues are playing with power and cohesion.

I thought the strong feature was the driving forwards play. Esp in the first half. They controlled possession and made yards. Left landers with very little opportunity.

I’d be wondering about the pattern. From what I know all the people Schmidt has attracted are straight, direct and passionate. They’re all mature people who’ve had enough up and down time. All of them get very good reviews from players. None of them have any dodgy australian rugby politics. That will do me.

Interesting point Harry. Which begs the question: what will unions do if French clubs end up crashing their livelihood? IMO fans want their national team to come first. Club owners and players might prefer other options. I’d be backing the national unions.

Your points are good ones Harry. But you also offered in your podcast a strong negative: the effect on cohesion. WBs will likely have a young squad for a bit and not a lot of players who’ve developed closely together. Boks on the other hand have a lot of older players who’ve spent long periods together.

With Foketi and Ikitau outside him, Gordon gets a lot of options and two very good readers of the game. Foketi is also very good at making ground in tight situations. The three together would give wings quite a bit more in terms of options. But I don’t know what happens if Carter isn’t kicking well?

There were some very encouraging displays. Carter Gordon showing his resilience in contact as well as glorious pass. Foketi at the Tahs reminding us that he and Ikitau make a great WBs combo. Rebels front row. Tahs unsung Gamble and Heaven. But the Reds! What’s in their heads?

Ref had a lot to do. I can’t recall seeing multiple deliberate knockdowns of a pass in defence by one team in a few minutes. Landers seemed to be inviting trouble. Lucky to not get a bunch of cards. But I’d say the kiwis were the ones complaining.
Rebels really need to sort their lineout and first up tacklers. Gifting opportunity to opponents. But they are fun to watch and great to see them putting a few wins together.

Great to see him have such a great comeback game. But he’s got a way to go before he’s a WBs contender. At this stage Noah seems like top choice with Carter held back by kicking.

Reds consistently have trouble with a firm, muscular defence. Clearly have the skills but seem stuck on trying to bully defences that won’t be bullied.

Certainly is Peter, though I think Rennie was going there – until EJ took us back to kindy selection. This is why I think Neville is looking good for a lock spot, and Smith might get there with a bit more aggression. Valetini shows it every week nowadays and Gibbon is another.

I reckon the Rebels might take another step this week and tighten up the defence, to give them a good win. Tahs, on the other hand, have a passive tackle approach that really has to change or they’ll really take a beating. If Moana come with a beefy defence the Reds will be tested again, I suspect. Canes should power over the Chiefs. In short, it’s toughening up time.

Marky Mark hasn’t had his head in the game this season. Work rate poor, low level of energy. I am wondering whether he’s realised that he’s opted out of the WBs and that’s now sunk in.

Spot on JDK. Ross is a genuine bloke, I’m sure. His points are probably in line with what many propose (though hints of the ghost of Hamster may be a bad sign). But we need to know who is on the ticket and what exactly they propose. I agree: Herbert and Waugh appear to be making sound choices, and let them go ahead on that track. We do not need another round of disruption.

Again, Ross makes a good argument. But he’s not yet saying who sits in those chairs. In my view the whole system has been shown up. That includes the state hierarchies. But we simply cannot trash the lot. Ideally there are excellent candidates to put up for board seats and they should announce themselves. Some might even get elected. Otherwise fans can get behind the team they follow and where they can, give certain people a good kick in the bum.
