Oh yes…big, bad Manly being mwan to poor, oppressed little Norths. Do me a favour – the Sea Eagles and their fans didn’t want the merger any more than the Bears did. For both parties, the joint venture was a financial necessity and nothing more. If it had not been, Manly could have continued as a stand-alone club in the NRL, having finished 11th out of 14 in the criteria.
And BTW…the joint venture lasted only two seasons, not three. The 2002 “Northern Eagles” were Manly, continuing to use the NE moniker entirely at the NRL’s insistence, before returning to their real name and colours in 2003.
Bring back the Bears nostalgia only goes so far: Norths no certainty to be a success if brought out of hibernation
