I think some of your facts are very dicey. For instance Nick Koster played loose forward throughout his school career. Immediately after school they then tried him out at outside centre. That didn’t work so he then went back to number eight. I don’t believe he was ever a 14. Willie Le Roux was a 10 for Boland before he went to Griquas and the Cheetahs. He played mostly 15 for Griquas and mainly on the wing for Cheetahs, but also alternating at 15.
In my opinion Francois Steyn has only himself to blame for not living up to his potential. When you get as out of shape as he managed to get himself you cannot be the player you once were. Just go back and look at his shape and foot speed in the 2007 World Cup and compare it to the last few years.

Actually he played his first games for WP as a loose forward, but you are correct in that he played his first game for the Stormers as a wing. However as mentioned he played all of his school rugby as a loose forward and the experiment of playing him in the backline was a failure that did not last very long.
