Another great read Nick. Here’s one for you, what’s your prediction for Friday? How do you think Joe will go against T.J?
For mind, Joe has always looked sharp and workman like but the daylight between someone like Joe and your T.J’s is the extra danger that comes with them, you know at any moment they can open you up.

Michael Cheika's selection conundrum at halfback

Rt, yeah, sort of, yeah, I take your point with editorialising and a general mistrust of elite establishment (I don’t think left or right is immune to that mistrust) but this is a much bigger conversation than the conversational thread like this could/would have any interest in. My rule of thumb these days is to take information and advice from the people who are closest to the source… e.g. if you want to know how to make a great hamburger, ask the guy at the corner store, build a solid dam wall, ask an engineer, if you’re feeling sick, see a doctor, if you’re interested to know why the polar caps are melting, ask a climate scientist.

Why didn't the ARU reply immediately to the damaging Roy Morgan fake news?

piru, I stand corrected, not having read or being caught up in too many alien births lately, my first and only real contact with the phrase being used with conviction is from the very recent news cycle and that reality tv guy.

Why didn't the ARU reply immediately to the damaging Roy Morgan fake news?

Yeah, the phrase “fake news” was coined by that idiot in the USA to complain about the truth. I’m not sure the use of it does anything but undermine any point that might be made and maybe make people wonder if you’re also running from the truth.

I don’t watch League Jacko, my point is simply that Spiro seems uninterested in all aspects of Union aside from ‘Running Rugby’. In League they have structured the laws of the game so that the only real key focus is ball running and what the attacking team do with it, interfere with that and you’re breaking the rules, the attacking team given the right to six tackles without the ball being contested or something like that, before the other side gets a turn. Yeah I tend to agree with you about League brother but I’m not really into bashing a sport or anything really that a bunch of other people like watching….. some people like watching golf? Work that one out? The great thing about Union is the ball is always and continually being contested in a hundred different ways and just because it isn’t always pretty galloping backs on the tear doesn’t mean it isn’t exciting. As I said, give me a maul, give me a scrum, all of it, it’s what makes this game great not a slow move towards League because ‘there’s not enough running rugby’, let each team have their personality, the best teams will always compete with whatever is thrown at them.

Five into four doesn't go: Move the Brumbies to Melbourne

To be honest I think Spiro should have a good look at Rugby League, I think it might have everything he’s looking for in a game of ‘footy’. Personally I like the differences that each Super Rugby team brings to the park, every game is a brand new set of obstacles and challenges that have to negotiated to win, bring on the rolling maul, bring on hard grinding breakdowns, yes, galloping backs, territorial kicking, epic scrum battles etc…. if you want a game where running play is the key focus, simple, watch Rugby League.

Five into four doesn't go: Move the Brumbies to Melbourne

There seems to me a pretty easy fix to the mess Super Rugby is in where they get to have their cake and eat it and is perhaps what you are alluding to above when you talk about the UK set up (I haven’t seen it so I can’t say). Keep 18 teams or any number you want and play a domestic competition as a road to the finals which is international where only the best two teams go through. This saves both on cricket score matches and the gruelling travel the players currently face.
Three conferences of six teams, NZ plus Jaguars, Australia plus Sunwolves and South Africa. Play everyone home and away. The top two teams go through for an extended finals series of home and away games leading to an epic final. (Like a mini Champions League).
This may not satisfy the tv component of the problem but it certainly addresses some of the home popularity issues, as the most popular games are of course derbies and the ridiculous travel schedule.

The Wrap: Super Rugby speculation misses the mark, England miss the slam

The premier league etc in the UK have another 20 teams each division ready to go, there’s just not that depth and structure in rugby. The thing that seems most broken in Super Rugby is a convoluted and horribly unbalanced conference system, play half of one conference, most of another, a few home games and travel to Mars and back……
As I wrote above, 3 conferences of 6 teams is good, it’s fine. Play each team in your conference home and away (the local games are the ones the crowds turn up for and it saves enormous amounts of travel) and then the two best from each conference go through to, you know, be beaten by one of the NZ teams.

Roar Forum: Which Aussie Super Rugby team should get the chop?

Yeah, this seems to be a bunch our ‘brightest and best’ bamboozled and unable to make a footy comp work and now they’re going to blame the teams. Just keep it simple. 3 Conferences, 6 teams each. Nz plus Argentina, Australia plus Japan and South Africa. Play each team in the conference at home and away, best two teams from each conference go through to the finals, job done!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooOOOooOooooOOOOOOOooOOoooo!!!!!!

Balls!! For the love of Zeus!! Tipping?!?!?! When but yes I should have known… but… NoooOooOooO!!! So yes,

Blues
Highlanders
Reds
Hurricanes
Crusaders (PP)
Tahs
Lions
Jags

Sweet little baby Jesus!! the easiest tipping round in the history of sport and I didn’t remember to put it in…. going to be a long hard season to wrestle back 10 points behind…. I’m still a chance to win right….?

The Roar’s Super Rugby tips and predictions: Round 1 - the return!

Bit disappointed with the niggle at the end there, they just didn’t seem to have their hearts in it, I’ve seen better in niggle in Super.

England vs Wallabies highlights: England win, 37-21

I used to love cricket and watching the Baggy Greens grab a win of the West Indies back in the day was something special. Then something seemed to go very awry with that team, I’ll never forget Michael Slater relentlessly abusing an Indian batman because he thought the guy should have walked. The behaviour of the team at that stage had been a little questionable but from about that time on I just couldn’t watch anymore. Disgraceful, sure.
The AB’s every now and then walk close to the line but on the whole they seem to understand they are apart of something that is much much bigger than them and they only hold their jersey because of everyone who’s come before them and everyone around them, people they play with and against bringing out the best in them.
Of course as an Australian I think I live in the greatest country in the world but at times our pathetic attitude at the seems like a massive and dull hangover from our past achievements breeding a generation of entitled pricks.

Change course now or be ashamed of our Wallabies' future

“The Tahs could rightly claim to be a little hard done by at the moment – they’re equal on points with the Brumbies and have a better points difference, but are being kept off the top of the Australian conference because they have one less win.”

Yeah, pretty outrageous that winning games is more important than points difference. Maybe SANZAAR can look at fixing that up before next year kicks off.

Super Rugby cheat sheet: Two rounds to go

I’m not ready to write off Larkham just yet but yeah there’s probably more evidence out there to suggest that great players make poor coaches than the other way round. It shouldn’t be surprising really, how many great scientists or historians would make great teachers, how many critics or reviewers make great writers or artists and just because you’ve been a patient doesn’t make you a doctor. There’s an obvious sharing of very particular knowledge but the way it is processed is completely different depending on what you are suppose to do with it.

SPIRO: Why not appoint Mark Ella as the Wallabies' attack coach?

At the moment I’m taking comfort in the fact that the Brumbies have lost to the teams that sit 1st, 2nd and 3rd on points in the comp…. unfortunately it doesn’t feel particularly comfortable, something like a futon mattress in a share house.

Consistency now the biggest issue in Australian conference

Brumbies got schooled by the Chief’s tonight. Maybe the travel caught up with them, maybe the board has being trying to talk them through what they want to do with CEO…… Schooled!!
