A-League preview and talking points: Round 1
Attended double=header at Suncorp as father’s day present and watched this weekend’s games on 10+. Played rugby at school in NZ but prefer football and am fan of all codes. “If you want boredom watch a nil all soccer draw.” Quite an erudite article but spare us the cliches please. My observations as a fairly neutral supporter is that the sport of rugby is in trouble. Many people left Suncorp after the Ox Boks game – had they just come to watch Australia not rugby? More people left before the end of the AB’s Arg game. I did not but can’t blame them. Some elements which concerned me – the frequent stoppages exacerbated by a veritable tribe of high-vis vests charging onto the field and the referee having to wait until they had all strolled off before restarting – this has to stop. The scrum lottery – Can’t understand the logic of a team hooking the ball and then collapsing the scrum and giving away a penalty. Commentators frequently pointing out that the wrong prop has been penalised on numerous occasions – is this a referee’s problem or a rules problem? In the end it doesn’t matter whose problem it is but it just increases the frustration and disillusionment of spectators. The seemingly fruitless kicking the ball to the opposition. As a football fan, I’m well aware of the story of WW Ellis at Rugby school picking up a football and running with it – the essence of the new game. Do the coaches, players and administrators know how incredibly boring this aspect of the game is? A major nail in the coffin!!
Give me a pulsating 0-0 football draw any day – except where one team has ‘parked the bus’ – I’ll concede they’re occasionally boring but my concern is that there are more boring rugby tests. I can’t say I’ve really enjoyed any of the tests the last two weekends. Rugby must change!!
