COMMENT: Bizarre selection call that sums up chaos and disconnect at Super Rugby's biggest basket case

Based on all the evidence it would seem Cheika is the best option; but would he want to have to kowtow to RA again – it didn’t work well last time.
However despite that:-
1) he has a cv that is peppered with success
2) he has proven he can build teams
3) past history suggests he is respected by most players
4) he calls a spade, a spade; not a long handled instrument, holes for the digging of.
Given what the Waratah’s need, I do not see any of the other suggested coach’s having the experience to perform the major surgery the team needs. Get them in as assistants for sure, so long as they know what a spade is.

And Ritchie Arnold? – always puts in ~60 minutes a game for Toulouse; and Skelton went the full 80 for La Rochelle against Bordeaux.

Just finished watching the latest KOKO podcast on youtube (always puts a smile on your face) and it was telling that Ma’a Nonu plus the 3 Wallabies all rated the Top 14 competition as the toughest in the world.

Kells, Wright, Donno, Jock or Kurtley? What Joe Schmidt's past tells us about the Wallaby fullback sweepstakes

“Although he fell out of favour, and his missed tackle on Damian Penaud………..”

Who has not missed a tackle on Penaud. In Bordeux’s game last weekend against La Rochelle he was typically boxed in by 3 defenders but he either got away, or at least got the ball away.

For me, if you err on the side of ‘rugby nous’ Kellaway wins hands down. All those mentioned, with the exception of Beale and Newsome could be in the running.

I have the feeling many (any?) do not watch much Top 14 rugby so maybe there is a misunderstanding of how good Newsome is; he is constantly a stand out performer in a very average team. However, he will not be in the picture from a geography and age perspective.

A welcome addition for sure, but he doesn’t come close to solving the Waratahs front row disaster, let alone the team’s dilemma. Despite that, they have shown a lot of character.

How an Argentine prop playing 10,000 miles away ended up taking an SOS to solve Tahs' crisis

Perhaps viewing his games at Clermont (if you have not done so), and who he played against, would give you a different perspective. He may not be a Manny Meafou, a Skelton or a Posolo Tuilagi without adding ~20kg; but not many are

Five things: Where DC got it wrong with Tahs, perception and reality for Wallabies hopeful as Test bolter shines

In earlier comments some were suggesting Amatosero should go back to Shute shield. For me, having had 2-3 years playing in the Top 14 competition, Shute shield could not teach Amatosero anything. Vis-a-vis the spring tour, he would already likely have played against many UK players he would come up against; and played against South African teams.

Global evidence would suggest otherwise

Unless the current Wallaby coach sees something different in Wilson’s technique and offering, (which many do not) compared to at least the last two Wallaby coaches, and given other more well rounded and viable #8s that are available, Wilson may well not make the squad again.

The Wrap: Spare a thought for injured players as Super Rugby’s two rutting rhinos deliver an epic final preview

Great win by the Force – full 80 minute effort. Not a great effort by the Drua but you can only play as well as you are allowed to; they did not make the spectacular tackle breaks we had become used to as teams have learnt you need to tackle them at lower leg level. It worked for the Brumbies and yesterday worked for the Force.

'Triple threat' Donaldson leads Force to massive win over Drua to keep Super Rugby finals hopes alive

Clearly it would now (if it was not evident before) be a travesty if the Rebels were forced to disappear; also, it would seem the Reds are not quite as good as they think they are.

'Perhaps it's surgery': Reds win ugly over Rebels to keep top four hopes alive as big-name Wallabies forced off

Maybe one of the reasons Lynagh leads in tackle is that so many of his tackles are around the lower leg. I think that is using his brain; given his size he is not going to be really successful tackling upstairs. Lower leg tackling is, I think, too neglected these days although I did see several in the Brumbies Drua game – it is the only way to stop those big buggers.

The five candidates for the Wallabies No.10 jersey - and the old heads who may sneak in to join them

Realistically, for me, the choice is between Gordon and Lolesio. Both have shortcomings, Gordon’s kicking and Lolesio’s defence – who can forget Lolesio being steamrolled in one of the recent Bledisloes. Gordon’s kicking can be improved; not sure, after so many years at the top 2 levels, about Lolesio’s defence improving. Gordon also has much better vision and is playing behind a pack that does not give him much time or protection.

I think Lynagh is one for the future but it is revealing, given he is the smallest, that he has the best defence; maybe a result of growing up tackling his much bigger older brother….and maybe his father 😁

The others do not ‘do it’ for me and the old brigade should be consigned to history.

kingplaymaker – nevertheIess, would not be surprised to see him at the Waratahs. I like to think he is not that ego driven that he would only be attracted to national team coaching. He clearly has a love for the game and with his other business’ he probably doesn’t need the money.

The big step back Cheika needs to take if he ever wants to snare an NRL coaching gig

Obviously you (Keith (no longer) of WA) have a jaundiced view of Cheika, for whatever reason. Perhaps you should consider his Wallaby record in the context of who he had to deal and kowtow to at RA. I agree with kingplaymaker, his record speaks for itself and trying to dilute that success by suggesting others were responsible is a nonsense. You might like to consider how, in your view, such an inept coach managed to take a tier 2 rugby nation to a World Cup semi-final

The big step back Cheika needs to take if he ever wants to snare an NRL coaching gig

There is little doubt Cheika would be successful coaching a league team. Let’s face it, as complexity in team sports go, league is at the bottom, it is simple and not cerebrally challenging – you do not need to be a rocket scientist to coach it.
With Cheika’s proven successful (success is not necessarily measured by silverware, although silverware was definitely won) track record Cheika has, he would be better utilised at the Waratahs. Given his demise at the Wallabies was orchestrated by the RA management, yes, them again, rather than ineptitude, he should not be overlooked. His achilles heel may well be that RA do not like strong minded people even though I suspect Cheika has now mellowed somewhat.

Good news for the Reds and likely the Wallabies as well. There is a touch of Jonathan Danty about Paisami

Exclusive: Wallabies star turns down mega deal overseas to re-sign with Queensland Reds

RD – agree.
It still fascinates me how good French teams are at bing able to ‘create space’ – beautiful to watch. I think that 50-60%, maybe more, of tackles in the NH involve tackles of the lower legs usually with someone else upstairs – stops them dead. But it does seem to lead to a quick re-cycle but also many more jackal opportunities. That speed then seems to result in more space because of defending players not being back in position. In SR there seems to be a desire to shirt-front tackle ala league. Inevitably that results with at least 3 players on the ground and a reduced chance of a quick re-cycle – may account for why SR is slower.

Five things: The Reds have flipped the script - and it promises to be rewarded at the Wallabies selection table

A few decades ago I ref’d Joey’s 2nds versus (I think Shore) at Hunters Hill. Shore were on the field and we were, waiting, waiting, waiting until I knocked on Joey’s door to find the team on the knees getting divine instructions via a priest. Still makes me laugh. Maybe the 1st XV had a bishop.

Whenever I contemplate a change to my investment portfolio by introducing a new company, the first thing I do is to check out the Board of that company; what is the history of the directors, what other directorships do they hold, what is the governance history of the new company etc etc. Based on that, were RA a listed company I don’t think anyone would touch them with a barge pole – simply not good enough.

The Wrap: Rugby Australia gaslights Rebels staff and why ‘I Can’t Go For That’

What irks me is that Herbert waffles on about overspending when he was/is, in part, directly responsible for the overspend. His hypocrisy is outstanding

Rebels' Super future hanging on creditors' Friday vote as Rugby Australia set to go against plan

Chips – he needs to be compared to global like-for-likes and, for me, he just doesn’t rate. Aldritt, Savea, Earl and several others, Valentini, just, Cale perhaps in time, are the benchmarks and Wilson is not in that class. We should be comparing our players to the global best, not just to SR unless we want to kid ourselves.

The five Aussie young guns who should be celebrated - and the one who is ready for the Wallabies

Ha ha ha ……love it. You can anticipate Schmidt will have the same misgivings about Wilson as Rennie and Jones. Too much show pony (with usually zero post contact metres with his big boofhead runs) not enough rugby perspicacity.
