It all depends on how you put it. Australia hasn’t won an Ashes series in the UK for over two decades despite having a stronger side for most of that time and has lost the last four test series’ to India.

Gap's never been wider between cricket’s Big Three haves and the have-nots ... and it’s only getting worse

Good on you Don. You are on a very slippery slope when you start sacking people who express a view contrary to the company line. CA has never been accused of being the intellectual elite but this is really welcome to Stasiland.

Good luck to Cummins but in what universe is he worth 4.5x Travis Head in T20.

Starc raving mad: Aussie to bank insane $13,000 per ball in IPL as Cummins and Head also go for big bucks

If you applied that standard about illicit drugs most teams would be a missing plenty. Jennings definitely should get another go if he is not past it.

Not sure what I think about Curtis Scott. There are blokes running round in the NRL who have done plenty worse. His conviction doesn’t read well though.

Kudos to Stephen Crichton for staying solid with Samoa.

Samoa squad: No Suaalii and no Luai, but no question for Crichton - it was only Samoa

The players are no more a product of the junior league team they played for as 12 year olds than they are of the school they attended.

My point above is only that a number of very good athletes are having their schooling and boarding at Sydney GPS schools paid for in full by NRL clubs. I am aware of multiple examples at one school and one NRL club. I believe the Waratahs do something similar but it is not as generous and their talent identification is behind the NRL clubs.

Regarding why these schools rather than “rugby league” schools I think the prospect of boarding nearby is beneficial to the NRL clubs. I also think the intangibles of expensive private schools around networks and maximising final exam outcomes might both be relevant.

I have no strong view either way. Good luck to you if you are good at footy and you get a decent education as a result. What code you chose to play is a matter for you.

I would observe the two best Wallabies backs in the past decade are ex league players and neither was particularly missed in league. Even though the article might be a bit of a wind up there is some truth that most of the best athletes initially tend to go to the NRL. Rugby admin might ask themselves why this is the case.

Don’t worry, Wallabies: the NRL is here to save you from yourselves

You misunderstand how this works. The NRL clubs identify the potential gun players at a young age. The NRL club pays for the boy to attend a GPS school, often as a boarder. The boy kills it at school boy rugby union. At the same time he continues to attend the development program for the NRL club. On leaving school or shortly after he signs with the NRL club who has looked after him by providing a good education and opportunity he probably otherwise wouldn’t have got.

These players aren’t lost to the rah rahs. They were never there to be lost.

Nothing to stop rugby offering a similar deal but this doesn’t seem to happen for whatever reason.

I thought the newish rule was unless it is a reportable offence the bunker can’t intervene. Walker caught Grant high with something less than full force. I’m happy for the ref to make the decision of no penalty on the run especially when Grant clearly just layed down expecting the penalty. I accept that sometimes during the regular season such a tackle would be a penalty. Suggestions that it was worth 10 minutes are off the mark.

I have some difficulties reconciling my view that rep games and finals shouldn’t be decided by a soft penalty in the last few minutes as against what I believe is a pretty soft approach by the NRL towards concussion.

NRL Prelim Finals midweek talking points: Why do clubs keep thinking so small with stadium stupidity?

Maybe the make up of their squad dictates the style of play. They have one of the strongest packs in the comp but are lacking a little in all the key positions.

With a differential of over minus 100 and a soft draw any suggestion they should of made the top four is a joke.

Sticky question: Has Ricky Stuart taken the Raiders as far as he can?

Have to agree on paper at least the Knights have the weakest combined 6,7&9 in the comp. That would suggest they have massively over achieved this year or that Ponga is having an outsize influence. Perhaps a bit of both.

'Pick ya battles boy. You are below average': Mason returns serve on Gamble after Knights' exit after 'get f---ed' sledge

Very good. Maybe To’o on the wing for mine. He is just so consistent and so good bringing the ball back. Also Api at hooker. I think he has been a stand out every week in an otherwise very ordinary team.

Walsh's weapons, 'beautiful' Harry Grant - NRL regular season Team of the Year

I agree on the proviso that the NRL and/or the clubs pay for the suburban grounds to be upgraded to a minimum standard. The poor old tax payer has funded 2 new rectangular stadiums in the last few years. There is an argument that all finals before the GF in Sydney should be played at these grounds.

On balance a higher finish should be a home semi but 13000 at Shark Park is a joke for professional sport.

Walsh & Haas in, DCE & Hunt out, Latrell, Foxx down on form: Selection dilemmas facing Meninga for Kangaroos' new era

Loving watching the Knights the past few months. I can’t help but think Ponga is absolutely carrying them. There 6,7 &9 would all struggle to make any of the other top 8 contenders.

Ponga and Walsh are the two dominant players at the moment for mine. They are such a danger with the ball and are subject to so much opposition focus they allow their team mates that much more space and time.

Round 26 Talking Points: JWH, Ricky and a few others a bit 'tired and emotional' as pressure of finals race hits boiling point

In isolation 6 weeks looks very harsh for JWH. The “headbutt” was as soft as they come. Perhaps a bit of karma given how close the line he has been skating the last few years.

Not sure how Jordan Ratana has avoided suspension the past few weeks. Perhaps Ricky could give us an explainer.

Round 26 judiciary: Waerea-Hargraeves whacked with huge ban, Horsburgh facing suspension, Staggs in strife

As someone earlier alluded to retention is easier than recruitment. Panthers and storm are not paying big money for recruits and their decisions are more around which players to keep. More often they are offloading very good players. Sometimes these players are not as good at different clubs for a whole variety of reasons. The fewer high end recruitment decisions a club makes the fewer they will get wrong.
Of the examples mentioned Schuster and Luciano at $800k (if true) seem to me over the odds.

Bang for your buck: Spending 'overs' on talent is simply bad NRL business

Excellent. Whatever my opinion about the relative merits of test v t20 the market speaks.

The players, even from the big 3, are making the rational decision to maximise their earnings and that means T20.

India and to a lesser extent Australia and England have reaped what they have sown in regard to the funding of the other test nations. Not the only reason for declining quality of the test teams in other countries but certainly a major contributor.

I don’t think test cricket will die in the next few decades but I can’t see a road back for improvement in quality for teams outside the big 3. That will feed in to further disillusionment with test cricket. Who can honestly say they are looking forward to the test matches in Australia this summer?

The death of Test cricket, and the Australian summer, is nigh

I’m interested in seeing what the figures are as a more of an academic exercise as to how with the same cap we can see the tigers roster vs the panthers roster. Not sure where I sit on actually publishing players salaries. On balance I’m probably against.

I have zero faith in the NRL auditors and don’t believe for a moment all payments are disclosed.

I would have thought a system proposed many years ago by Warren Ryan where players are allocated a certain value each season would work better than the current salary cap.

My salary (130k plus maybe 40k in benefits) is publicly disclosed in an annual report. I don’t care about this particularly but I understand others might have a different view.

Agree the Tigers are having a good crack most weeks, certainly since origin. On balance I would be more disappointed if I was a dogs supporter this year than a tigers supporter given the respective rosters.

I just can’t understand how you let both your starting halves leave when there seems no short or medium replacements.

Benji taking reins early as Tigers make cut-throat call on Sheens: 'Suggestions about us knifing Tim are demeaning'

I don’t think it matters who coaches the tigers. They have a terrible roster and are losing both starting halves next year. They have one good front rower, one of the best hookers in the comp and a super promising winger and fullback. That’s it.

The tigers problems have many causes and I don’t think sacking the coach is really the answer.

Benji taking reins early as Tigers make cut-throat call on Sheens: 'Suggestions about us knifing Tim are demeaning'

You’re right.

I’d love to see salaries published. Let’s say Broncos spend 9% of their cap on each of Haas, Carrigan Walsh and Reynolds. That would be 36% of your cap on 4 players in a 30 man squad. You are either carrying plenty of minimum salary players or everyone else is on $300k a season.

I won’t argue about the current strength of Penrith juniors as I simply don’t know enough detail. Recent history suggests there will continue be more enough good players coming through when needed.

Perhaps you are right and there is an element of resentment in my comments. You could put together a side of ex Storm and exPanthers still playing and they would be a top 4 team. I can’t get my head around how these two clubs but particularly the Panthers are able to lose very good players year after year and still be at the top of the table.

Haas rejects Wallabies and Bulldogs to remain in Brisbane - mere minutes after TPJ quits to free up cap space

They still have the best roster although they have lost a number of very good players in the last few years. Replacements have been exceptional without the usual 50 games in first grade to get up to standard.

Panthers are consistently retaining the best juniors. How this happens with a salary cap and restrictions around hoarding the best young players is open for debate. There may or may not be some rorting going on but in the absence of the fabled disgruntled former employee my guess is the Panthers will be at the top of the table for the next five years. No rebuilding needed.
