I think you’e swayed those statistics in Australia mate. You’ve called Lyon better in Adelaide as Warne averaged 30, but then called Lyon’s average of 30 in Melbourne good as well?? In reality, it’s all about whether you can feel confident in your spinner to bowl you to victory on a day 5 turner. I always felt confident that Warne could do a job anywhere in the world. I just don’t share that faith in Lyon. Yes he’s been handy for Australia and 250+ wickets is a great return. But a Leggie will always win out for me and if we’ve got a good one in Swepson, than I think we need to pursue it.
It's time for Australia to pick a leg-spinner
Not one of them goes at 5rpo and with International experience and access to bigger turning pitches, I think they would all improve their numbers. I agree that Warne is the anomaly but why not give one of these kids a go. Pick them and stick with them, give them a chance to shine.
It's time for Australia to pick a leg-spinner
I agree and have 0 issue with players leaving early. I just want the clubs to be adequately compensated for said player. On the 4-3-3 issue you bring up, i completely agree. The Socceroos don’t even play it, so why should our juniours!?!?
How the A-League got it all wrong
That could work Ken, although I’m not sure on the logistics. I’m just sick of the A League clubs getting 0 for their efforts in making these young guns.
How the A-League got it all wrong
Yes I’m aware you can’t sell a player off contract. But more should have been done with J-Mac in particularly to ensure he was under contract. Re-sign him to what he wants because he’s clearly worth it.
How the A-League got it all wrong
They could and should have used their marquee spot on him. Instead Aloisi and the Roar have placed their faith in veteren players like Maccarone and Holman…. Worked well on Wednesday night when we got spanked by the Victory 5-1. I was at that game and we looked cooked…… Sorry but I think the Roar shat the bed on this one.
How the A-League got it all wrong
I just don’t believe it’s feasible to say 16yo kids won’t sign with A League Clubs if they think the club will play hard ball on their transfer if they become good. Not everyone’s going to be that good and kids/managers will realise this. Most will just be grateful to have the chance.
How the A-League got it all wrong
I attended the Brisbane Roar’s very first game in 2005 so no I wasn’t too young. I see what you’re trying to say but if the right offer doesn’t come in, A League clubs shouldn’t sell. I wouldn’t sell my house if someone offered me $100,000. I’d continue to live in it until someone offered me a good enough price.
I don’t think Adelaide should have sold McGree for $100,000. If that’s all that was on offer, keep him for another year. He would probably have had an amazing year this season for Adelaide and then the bigger offer may have come.
How the A-League got it all wrong
What I mean by that is lower AUS leagues like the NPL. The A League should be a farm house for AUS talent. Collect the best talent from the NPL, put a high price on them and keep them until they’re ready to be sold for a high price.
How the A-League got it all wrong
Nah I disagree, we should be collecting talent for free from lower leagues, not paying fees to import.
How the A-League got it all wrong
Da Silva and Rogic are different, i think they were actually sold for decent coin. But as for the others, I say tough luck. We deserve better than the pittance we got in return for them. They’re better than 100k IMO.
How the A-League got it all wrong
I Agree, but currently we’re not getting the best return possible. We’re getting cents on the dollar and for our league to survive long term, we need and deserve better.
How the A-League got it all wrong
Wizards should be top 3 this yr. They’ve surpassed the Raps and could arguably be perceived as better than the C’s. I love Wall and Beal and wouldn’t be surprised if they were the starting backcourt for the All Star Game.
Cautious or rightfully ambitious? A look at the Wizards offseason
Our first Season since the dark ages without Broich. I’ll be there supporting but I don’t have high hopes unfortunately.
Brisbane set to emulate Ange's infamous 3-4-3 system
I like Anderson. Him, Steyn and McGrath should go down as the best 3 bowlers of this generation.
Jimmy Anderson closing in on 500 Test wickets
He’s too old and has proved time and again he’s not an international striker. 0 goals in 26 games stands for itself.
Overseas Aussies set for big seasons in Europe
I see the point you’re making about being about to put the ball on a dime every ball. But fingers spinners just won’t win you matches outside of Asia. Australia has to realise this and blood a leg spinner sooner rather than later. O’Reilly, Grimmett, Benaud, MacGill and Warne. Considered our 5 best spinners ever, all leggies. We can’t keep picking Offies because they’re accurate. Australia needs to bite the bullet and blood one of these kids – whether it be Boyce, Swepson or Zampa……
Agar over Swepson for Bangladesh Tests
I like that side 😀
Thompson and Kokkanakis give their all on the court.
Peers and Kyrgios let their talent do the talking.
And I agree, Tomic’s reputation in Australia is rock bottom. He may never recover from this.
Davis Cup semi-finals: Who should Lleyton Hewitt pick for Belgium?
He can captain about as well as his wife can cook….. Stick to your OLED’s Davey
I can still captain Australia: Warner
Uzzi will play at the GABBA. It his (adopted albeit) home ground and always does well in AUS Summers.
Pay deal sorted, so here's the first XI for the Ashes at the Gabba
Firstly Liam, I like your opinion on the batsmen, if others score 100’s as well as Smith and Warner, thats lights out for England.
The rest of your argument, I can’t say I agree with.
Nevill should never have been dropped to begin with, but at this stage, that seems like a moot point. Only time will tell if Wade can prove me wrong.
As for Nathan Lyon, this is where your argument falls apart. Yes he’s taken 28 wickets in 10 (which mind you is only 2.8 wickets a match, no great IMO). But let’s subtract the 19 wickets in 4 matches against India and there is 9 wickets in 6 matches. That’s appalling by anyone’s standards. Yes I agree he’s the best of a bad bunch at this stage, but Warne was picked before he was ready and he turned out alright… The selectors really need to bite the bullet and get a leg spinner in there ASAP IMO. Off Spinners just don’t turn the ball in Australian conditions and the sooner we all realise this, the better.
Pay deal sorted, so here's the first XI for the Ashes at the Gabba
I don’t disagree but he was given a chance and made a 100. Mitch Marsh never did that.
If Maxwell plays poorly in the first few test matches this summer however, I’d have no problem turning elsewhere.
Pay deal sorted, so here's the first XI for the Ashes at the Gabba
Nah regular red ball game for the GABBA this year.

Amen Ryan, can’t wait for the season.
And yes, I agree Wade is likely to be picked unfortunately. Here’s hoping he doesn’t drop Root in 4 and he goes on to make 204…..
Pay deal sorted, so here's the first XI for the Ashes at the Gabba
Tim May had very similar numbers to Lyon in all honesty. May averaged mid 30’s and was good for what he was, an offie. You can certainly draw similarities to now with Swepson and Warne. Australia are desperate for a good leggie now whether they realise it or not.
