I think the issue is that there are far too many aimless box kicks. They are only effective if they are well directed and contested.

Brumbies rue missed chances as dubious refereeing calls help Hurricanes win thriller

It was a good match , despite it being spoilt by some very poor refereeing.

Thanks for another very good article, Harry. I did not see anything robotic in Duhan van der Merwe’s brilliant try against England! I share your concern about the locks.

You never know these days, but if that “ try” had been disallowed , a penalty try could have been awarded because of an illegal tackle.

Good points made. Rennie was building an excellent pack of forwards. I wish the new regime well.

Maniacal competitors, blunt force innovators and the taint of corruption: Four men who shaped rugby in 2022

Another very good, thought provoking, article although I didn’t get the Hugh Jackman – Rob Simmons comparison? Rugby is a professional game run by amateurs. The very high penalty counts in the modern game illustrate that the Laws are difficult to abide by. As an example, penalties awarded for “not rolling away” often make one wonder if the referees have ever played the game. The massive influence on results of reducing the number of players on the field, is another example of poor governance. I think that World Rugby could do with a massive overhaul. Maybe they should hire O’Gara, Rassie and Eddie?

That appears to be impossible.

What about the biggest time waster of all – the excessive number of penalties these days?

Another very good article Harry. There is an excellent interview with Wayne Barnes on the GBR podcast this week. The referees job is impossible under the current Laws. Unfortunately, World Rugby rates referees as being more important than players. They say repeatedly that you can’t have a game without match officials. Well you certainly can’t have one without players. Rugby referees are far too influential in the outcomes of matches. So many spectators and former players who have watched the game for years do not understand a significant proportion of refereeing decisions. There is a lot of talk about speeding up the game, but this always focuses on time taken by scrums , lineouts and penalty kicks. A significant time waster is the very high penalty count in todays game. Breakdown and tackle Laws are unnatural and far too open to interpretation. Sadly, World Rugby has turned the game into one that is impossible to play or referee accurately. The Laws need major revision. Spectators are abandoning the game in droves. Two European champions cup matches in South Africa last week drew less than 20,000 spectators combined and we have all seen how poor attendances are here and in NZ. I wish World Rugby would wake up.

Refs have become too famous to the game's detriment - they should be more respected but less well known
